“Basic accommodation but luxury service and staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

Accommodation is a little tired, but bedrooms and ensuite are more than adequate (room quite large and beds and linen really comfy), and the amazing staff and service make up for anything missing. Staff in the chalet (special mention to Supervisor Erica and Chef Ollie) and the Rep (Elliot) could not do enough to ensure we had a great holiday. The food was outstanding, so was the location. Great value for money.

Room Tip: Our room (106) was great - small but deep ensuite bath!

My 18 year old son & I stayed there in half-term week (never a good time to go skiing!), so the chalet was full. This probably means that it is the worst time to visit.

We had room 110, which was OK, but I must admit other reviewers are right when they say that the bathrooms are small. The room has a shower & toilet, with very similar space devoted to each, making it very difficult to even turn round once the door is shut. The shower was adequate, but could vary in temperature. Some people complained about the drainage from the showers, ours was partially blocked when we arrived, but was fixed easily enough after I mentioned it to one of the staff.

Also as mentioned by other reviewers the ski store is an attached garage. We never had any problems with it as we managed to get our boots into the warmer indoor ex-telephone cupboard that now doubles as a boot store.

The staff were always very friendly and would try to help with anything. I was slightly disappointed on the morning that both our pairs of skis were accidentally taken by other guests they didn't have any suggestions about the best course of action. (The correct thing to do if they are rented skis is just take the other peoples' skis back to the rental shop and they will sort out something to get you back on the slope again.)

The dining room is moderate size, with tables for about 10 people. This is OK, but if you want a group of you to sit together then it is a good idea to get there a few minutes before dinner time. We didn't find any problems with the arrangements, part of going to a chalet is to meet other people.

The food was OK, but let down by normally being over cooked, particularly the vegetables. The presentation often left a bit to be desired as well. Coffee after dinner was rather a hit-and-miss affair, with more miss than hit! They got a new filter coffee maker while we were there, but it took three nights for them to work out how to use it. Hopefully that should be OK by now.

There is also a comfortable lounge with a bar. This was rarely full, so I wondered if everyone actually knew that it existed.

The location is just about perfect, right at the bottom of blue 22, virtually opposite the end of red 21 and only a couple of minutes away from the Hahnenkamm lift. If you come back down blue 22 then you can ski right up to the front door by coming through the convenient gap in the hedge at the back. If you miss the gap then you will about a 25m walk to the door!

There is a walk from the bus drop off/pick up, but it is not long and to be honest if you can't manage that walk then you shouldn't be going on holiday in a mountainous area!

The Streifalm restaurant just over the road is a very good, very convenient place for dinner if you are eating out.

Would I go back? Not sure. The chalet holds ~35 people, whereas my ideal is probably ~25, but for convenient skiing you can't do much better unless you want to pay considerably more and go to one of the adjacent hotels.

Just returned from Chalet Karlberger yesterday. I travelled with my husband and 7 year old daughter. We had a fantastic time!
The skiing was excellent, with a great wealth of options for all abilities.
The chalet was great too. Staff were lovely and always helpful. The food was good and if you didn't particularly fancy something on offer, they would always find a suitable alternative.
Rooms aren't 5 star, but they are warm and comfortable. Having a shower and bath was a useful addition. The balcony always kept out drinks nice and cold!
Often the people you share a chalet with, make the holiday. We were lucky enough a share our week (Feb half term) with a great bunch of people. The free flowing wine certainly helped us share the stories of the day etc.
I actually can't believe some of the reviews on this site are for the same Chalet we stayed in. I found it to be a very positive experience and would certainly recommend it to others. The location is amazing a great bonus for tired legs!

Room Tip: Rooms with bathrooms are better.

Just returned from a week at the Karlberger - 4 adults, 1 6 yr old and 2 nearly 3 years olds. Travelled to variety of resorts before including Kitzbuhel (stayed at the swanky Kitzhof) and slightly unnerved by negative reviews before we travelled. But no need to worry. Yes chalet is basic but very comfortable and clean. Food c/o Matt was superb - couldnt have been more obliging to check all were happy with menu, checking kids ok. Chalet staff couldnt have been more helpful or friendly, nothing too much trouble. Even helped us to and from bus with bags. Special thanks to Jen for babysitting as an extra and giving us a much needed child free evening! Right next to ski school and gondola - skied back every day to chalet as snow was incredible this week - never seen so much.

Stayed in quad room - perfect with kids. Yes a little dated but shabby chic is how I'd describe it, certainly not dingy and dark as described before. Kids loved our separate stairway entrance with moose over the door. We used the chalet lounge room every night - not dank and cold as someone else described it. Comfortable and functional - and again staff always on hand to supply drinks and even pre dinner snacks for kids.

Great mix of guests - and we had never stayed in a chalet before so didnt know what to expect.

For those who complain about the chalet - if you want 5 star luxury in Kitzbuhel then go and pay an extra few thousand and enjoy your spa. If you want good fun in a clean comfortable chalet, with great food and company, right next to the slopes then this is perfect and a damn site cheaper. We will definitely be going back!!!!!

Room Tip: Quad room great for families, few rooms have shared bathrooms (very clean) so specify when you book

On entering the chalet we were not made welcome, even though i was in a group of 4. The 2 chalet girls huddled in a corner to discuss what was happening with our rooms and then we was told that they were still not ready, even though it had gone 2pm. We was not told anything by the chalet girls not even what time dinner was that evening. On returning we were given our key and went to our room. The bathroom was sooo tiny, it was a joke, and it constantly smelt as if it had not been cleaned. We was in room 105. By day 2 there was still no weather report in the chalet. My husband asked what the weather was going to be like that day and the reply back from the chalet staff was " it looks quite nice", so we asked for a updated weather report, that was the one and only one we got !!. Staff showed a real disinterest towards us . There was a really sweet poliet girls called Jennifer was could not do enough to help you, but Camron always looked a little bored in everything he was doing. If your expecting breakfast on time at 7.30am, then dont go to the Karlberger, they was still putting out the spoons for breakfast at 7.50am! Our food actually was nice dispite one person in our group having 2 hairs in their food and johns chicken was bloody ( and the lady on the opposite table found glass in her sons food).

Room Tip: room 105 had a shower and toilet so small it was a joke !!!

We stayed at the chalet from 26th jan for 1 week with a party of 9, including 3 children. The chalet is located in an excellent position, very convenient for the main gondola & children's ski school. No need to use a ski bus!! The chalet despite being a little tired & in need of updating is comfortable & clean. Our room (103) had a bath, was very warm, comfortable beds & a stunning view of the mountain. The bathroom was a little tight for space & the room lacked storage space, although good enough for budget accommodation. The evening meals did not offer a choice, however the quality of food was fairly good, although portions not large. Wine & juice was free flowing during meal times!! Breakfast a little limited although there were some hot options, however don't get too excited!! Hot drinks, juice & water were available all day. Cakes were served at 4pm daily. The serving staff were generally very friendly & helpful.

Sadly there are some negatives!! The organisation in the chalet is poorly managed. It was not unusual to have to constantly ask for silly things like mugs & bread at breakfast!! Breakfast started at 7.30 am with hot food from 8 am, however it was not usually ready at this time. More alarming incidents included a piece of glass in the breakfast cereal, which fortunately wasn't found by the children. A master key was left on the outside of our bedroom door all day! On 2 occasions hair was found in our food!! When the room was cleaned, dirty towels weren't removed & changed despite being left on the floor. The staff has cleaned the bathroom, however must of cleaned around the towels!! Incidents were reported to the manager although this did not seem to raise particular concern. The final straw on the last morning, having discussed our early departure with the manager on the previous evening & assured a cold breakfast would be ready at 5.55 am we came down to find the area in darkness with no staff or food in sight!! having waited until 10 minutes prior to our scheduled departure we were forced to take the initiative & help ourselves to bread & the toaster in the kitchen & a drink for our son. The manager appeared as we were leaving to walk to the coach stop however expressed no concern about our lack of breakfast or the fact she told us she would ensure we could eat from 5.55 am. We refused her help in walking us down to the car park as we were very cross. We then waited for 30 minutes in the rain at our pick up point, my husband then returned to the chalet to ask the manager to find out where the coach was, she made a telephone call to the rep on the bus & advised us the coach would be arriving shortly. However when the coach arrived it transpired the rep on the coach had telephoned her earlier to advise her of the delay, however she was apparently to embarrassed to come & tell us.

Finally we did have a great time skiing, the conditions were amazing. If crystal could resolve the organisational problems of this accommodation this could be a great place to stay. Come on Crystal get your act together!!!!!!!!!
