“A classy oasis in a classic ski resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

I chose the Bichlhof to celebrate my 50th Birthday with my skiing buddies. The hotel is superbly appointed with a modern yet traditional Tirolean feel and the most attentive service you'll experience anywhere in Austria. The front of staff house staff Paulina, Anna and Sebastian could not have been more industrious, helpful and flexible. The barman Robert and the sommelier Patrick were simply outstanding, setting up a Sky TV lounge for us to enjoy a private viewing of a big Premier League football game on Sunday evening. The owners - Andrea + Walter Hopfner - were genuinely interested in us having a memorable time and allowed us to be flexible on our ski bus times and the drop-off/pick-up locations along the valley (Marco could however have been a little more amenable & smilier!). The spa facilities were modern, luxurious, spotless and just the perfect end to the full ski day. Both breakfast and dinner were 5 star, backed up by sensibly-priced wines and skilled, professional service. Despite this hotel being a good 3 miles out of Kitzbuehel town-centre, it did not affect our busy ski schedule or enjoyment. Frankly Downtown Kitz is a bit blingy and a tad overpriced anyway so we never felt like we were missing out. This classy hotel with its staff, spa and bar were easily ample compensation!

Lovely friendly service. An amazing outdoor pool and sauna. The restaurant was consistently good and of course the skiing amazing. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough. I'll be coming back very soon.

We've stayed here for skiing 4 times. Absolutely the best place to stay in Kitzbuhel, offering exceptional value for money, at the officially graded 'Four Star Superior' level. Family owned by Andrea and Walter who are very engaging and always to hand for anything you need; just ask. Exceptional and pleasing value all around. Attention to detail everywhere. Fabulous SPA and the best indoor/outdoor pool that I have ever experienced anywhere. Return from skiing, have a free snack from the skiers buffet (soup, baked noodles and cheese casserole or similar, homemade cakes, fruit) and then take a dip in the heated, steaming pool with a backdrop of the Tyrolean Alps. What more could you ask for?! The SPA offers wet and dry saunas, cold and hot soaking baths and excellent massages; when you book your room, book your massages immediately, ie far ahead of arriving.
FOOD and WINES:
The food is outstanding; six star menu at a very reasonable price. Best to buy the 'half-board' package so that you can relax after skiing, use the spa, pool, have your massage, have a rest and then come down for a cocktail and the evening gourmet menu. Walter, the husband, is a Master of Wine, so enjoy his wine tasting for guests each Sunday evening, promptly at 18:30 in the extensive wine cellar. The open wines, ie the cheapest ones are excellent, so do not hesitate to drink by the glass to learn about different Austrian grapes (as well as excellent Italian, French, German etc). Breakfast is a feast. Roberto at the bar makes excellent cocktails. Lunch is also served, often even outside in Winter on the patio in burning sunshine! If you don't see what you want on the menu, just ask; the chef is very obliging and can rustle up just about anything.
ROOMS:
Guest rooms are generously sized with super clean and modern bathrooms. Nothing lacking here.
GETTING TO THE SLOPES and into town:
The hotel is an 8-minute ride outside of the actual town of Kitzbuhel, situated high up on a ridge overlooking the famous Hahnenkam World Cup ski run, in the distance (see this as you swim in the outdoor part of the pool--gorgeous at night when it is all lit up).
The Bichlhof runs complimentary shuttle vans several times in the morning and afternoon to get guests to and from the ski lifts. Marco, the all-around man for all logistics, drives you straight to the lifts. You sign up for your time, say 9:00am or 10am or 11am and you also sign up for the time you want to be collected in the afternoon. Sign up in the notebook on the reception desk. (This is not clear to a lot of international guests, so I mention it here). If your plans change, just ring the hotel on your mobile/cell and let them know that you want to be collected at the later time or that you'll be taking a taxi back after walking around the town a bit.
Taxis are also available to get to the lifts or to just take a stroll around the small city of Kitzbuhel itself--a proper town with real stores offering excellent normal as well as super high-end designer shopping for clothes, jewellery, gifts, cosmetics etc), so you don't need a car really. Have the reception desk order you the taxi as they have a flat-rate price agreement with the taxi services; again, something we have learned over time so we are sharing the secret with you here.
Twice a season they offer a 'winter ski week package' (late January and early to mid-March) with a ski guide for five days, ski pass, half board etc. Again, excellent value and a very nice way to get to know some of the other guests as you ski in a group of about 10 people Mon-Fri. And a great way to ski all of the areas over five days without the hassle of dealing with lift maps and getting lost at high altitude. These ski week packages are Highly recommended. We enjoy the ski week as it makes us get up and go each morning!
GETTING THERE and our tips for shuttle transfers:
Flying into Salzburg, pre-order your transfer online via Andi's Taxi (33.00 Euro per person, ie very reasonable) and in under an hour you'll be in Kitzbuhel/at the Bichlhof Hotel.
Or fly into Munich and pre-order online a shuttle van transfer via FourSeasons/ Tyrol Taxi--takes less than two hours of driving and costs about 70 Euros per person (although this is a bit more complicated to meet your Tyrol Taxi driver as you must go to their 'desk' at the Munich airport; be warned that the driver does not meet you coming out of baggage claim. Print out the info and maps, diagrams of where to walk, on their site. Come out of baggage claim and go down to the level below following signs for car rental and U ie the Underground train system of Munich and surrounds. When you get to that area ask any of the car rental people to direct you to the desk for FourSeasons Travel Tyrol Taxi transfer).
CASH is still King
Many of the alpine huts offering incredibly delicious and outstanding home-cooked lunches, on the slopes at high altitude, still only take cash. My tip is to 1) come with at least some EUROS and 2) at the Salzburg or Munich airport go to a cash machine and take out the maximum 400 Euros allowed so that you can pay Andi's Taxi, give them a small tip, and have money ready for lunches, tips etc. (Be sure to ring your bank beforehand to have them note on your account that you will be in Germany (Munich Airport) AND Austria, so that the cash machines will work for you.

Room Tip: All rooms are very nice. Mattresses can be turned over to a hard side or a soft side. Other pillows...

From the first minute of our arrival until our departure four nights later, the staff was friendly, helpful, courteous - it truly felt like they were happy to have us at the hotel. Free loaner bicycles, a beautiful outdoor area with incredible views of the Tyrolean Alps, an indoor/outdoor swimming pool, and a fabulous spa. Buy the "breakfast included" package with your room - the buffet is of the very highest quality, and they'll even do "made-to-order" eggs if you like.

Room Tip: Highest floors have the best view of the Alps.

We just spent 5 days in Bischlhof hotel after ten years of staying there first time. We were greeted warmly as old friends. The Hopfner family and staff keep personal level of service. Cuisine based on hotel's own home produce. The great attraction is beauty area with an outdoor swimming pool ( temp 33 C ) No doubts it is the most sunny location in all Kitzbihel . Perfect place, peaceful and quiet, for both winter and summer. We will apparently come back there again.

Just a wonderful place. Set in the secret and sunny spot outside Kitzbuhel on the Bichalm. I was lucky enough to be introduced to this place many many years ago. Hike up and over the Bichalm mountain along the Alpenblumenweg to the Hornkoppfl Hutte on the Kitzbhueler Horn for a lovely lunch and a schnapps or two. So beautiful and if you are lucky like me you may well see a Marmot sunning himself on a stone above his burrow. Can't beat it. Shhhhh!

The visit to this hotel from the US in search of good snow was long but worth every moment! The hotel is lovely, quaint and understated. The food and wine are out of this world. The hotel owner is a wine collector and clearly knows good wine. Yogurts are homemade from the dairy adjacent to the property-so are all dairy products. Jams, breads, soups, fresh juices....too numerous to list...are all made on the premises. Every morsel of food was outstanding. It was important to get outside to downhill daily to work off the amazing meals! I Nordic walked and snow shoed as part of the daily excursions, which were well organized. Richard, was a talented ski and snow shoe guide. I participated in the late afternoon aerobics and Pilates-type classes before a swim in the indoor-outdoor pool. The overall visit was such a great value for the money and a beautiful break from the routine at US snow resorts which don't offer the European touches quite like they do here at Bichlhof. The owners are hands-on and beautiful people. I am going back in late January for 7 days.
