“The hills were alive!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2014

We stayed here for a long weekend in early February and were very lucky with the weather. The young gentleman on reception (I think one of the family who own the hotel) was extremely helpful and professional. Most of the staff were fantastic. Breakfast was brilliant.
Us and our friends had two rooms, both Sound of Music suites. Nice rooms but nothing special - certainly adequate for the price. Clean with flat screen TV, chairs and a small mini bar which had very reasonable prices. The coffee machine was a big plus!
Only one point which could do with improvement - the tiny bar area. No glasses to serve customers who like a little aperitif before the evening meal. One female receptionist thought we had interrupted her busy schedule of standing behind the counter or working on the computer when we dared to ask for a drink - but she redeemed herself on a later date. So 90% positive and would go there again. The owner doing a morning round of the breakfast room to say hello to every guest was a genuinely nice touch. Thanks to all at the Der Salzburger Hof for a lovely stay in Salzburg.

Room Tip: We didn't see the "normal" rooms - but the suites are like a large size normal room or...

Very nice hotel. Stayed one night with two adults and three teens (two rooms). The hotel staff were absolutely perfect - very friendly, quick check in late at night, full of information about around town activities, etc. There was parking but minimal spots so if it is busy that might be a problem. Rooms were fine although our beds were directly on the floor which we thought was odd. Traffic noise nominal. Hotel restaurant was good - willing to serve a tired family of five 20 minutes before they closed - very gracious.

Took a long weekend here in early February 2 kids 2 adults. Free Parking wasn't a problem in Hotel car park but I would guess it fills up quickly at busier times as its small enough. Check in was easy, friendly staff. Hotel lobby a bit aged and in need of a refresh which is weird as they have done up the rooms to a higher standard. Room was spacious with modern furniture and comfortable beds. Nespresso machine in room but you have to pay 1,50E per capsule, so only tea is free to have, no free instant coffee sachet alternatives.
Bathroom is fine but could also do with of a bit of a refresh (older style tiles and fitttings) but was clean and functional with underfloor heating, sensor tab was a bit odd in a non public bathroom but you got used to it.
Two tv's one in bedroom one in 'lounge' with DVD's available for free from reception (didnt try but guess good selection). One gripe for some may be that in this family room there is no door between bedroom and lounge (sofa bed) so once kids put to bed you have to be quiet and keep tv in bedroom off (lying on sofa bed you look straight into TV in bedroom). As many family rooms have all the beds in one room anyway its no big issue but when you actually have two separate rooms, having a door would be a nice bonus.
Room faced onto crossroads between two relatively busy roads but we didnt have any major traffic noise issues on second floor but maybe lower down or on other side of hotel with the busier road it might be a problem.
Breakfast was very standard fare in the restaurant, I would give it a 6-7 out of 10. Scrambled eggs and bacon for hot with range of meats, cheese, bread and cereals/yoghurt for cold choices. Didnt try the restaurant for dinner but it seems to serve standard Austrian fare, schnitzel, cordon bleu, etc
Location was ok, Salzburg is a quiet city and its a bit out of the centre, but you can walk into the city centre along the river in about 20 minutes and buses run just outside. In the immediate area there isnt much, although there is one highly rated italian restaurant a couple of blocks away, and the area itself is fine, not exclusive but not rundown. The associated Salzburger Hof Apartments are literally across the road from the hotel itself.
Overall a good enough price quality combo.

Room Tip: Usual road facing rooms may be noisier...

Also the breakfast was nice. Other than that I was not so pleased with this place. It started with the desk clerk acting like our desire to check in was an interruption of her work on the computer. Probably this was work she did not want to lose, but I wonder what kind of management has desk clerks responsible for this sort of thing ahead of greeting customers. The room as clean. The bathroom ridiculously tiny. My closet is bigger, and my closet is not that big. This is not a place for anyone who plans to watch any television as it looked like one you would have in your kitchen, up high and very small. I don't watch TV so it was no problem. The desk table was plastic, the chairs were hard, orange and wooden. I must not have looked at the pictures well enough. Or maybe there are other rooms that are better than what we stayed in. It was not what I expected. The street outside was noisy and the insulation did not mask it at all. I did like the view out the window and the parking was convenient.

Room Tip: Don't.

I have chosen to stay at this hotel on several occasions in both summer and winter as I know that I can always be assured of a warm welcome. The themed rooms, Mozart, Sound of Music and Salzburg are spacious, clean and comfortable and are equipped with tea /coffee making facilities. The Old Town is a fifteen minute walk, but buses run from the station which is just two minutes from the hotel. There is a shopping complex one minute away with a good supermarket. An excellent buffet breakfast is served in the Restaurant which offers good meals of an evening. This is a family run hotel and the staff are always helpful. They will advise and book tours, concerts and transport and help fulfil any requests. There is always a refreshing drink available in Reception on returning from a day's exploring. Annaliese and Johann Donhauser and their team are passionate about Salzburg, the city of Mozart and they will make sure that your stay in this beautiful city is the best possible.

Room Tip: If you are travelling solo, book a double room. It's worth it to have big bed.

I stayed here with my family and we had a wonderful time. The rooms are nice and spacious and being so close to the the train station was really convenient. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only con was that the street in front of the hotel is pretty busy, so there was some street noise, but it wasn't unbearable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street.
