Planning our trip to Salzburg, we were playing with several different options: one of them being Hotel Stein, the other being the 'Weisses Kreuz'. We finally got a good price at Weisses Kreuz and decided to stay there - and we didn't regret it. As mentioned in other reviews: the hotel _is_ centrally located: not only a 2 minute walk to the funicular that leads to the castle, but also only two minutes to the cathedral and the inner city. Even though it is very centrally located, the hotel is rather quiet (well, the cathedral comes with church bells...) since the inner city is a pedestrian area (however: cabs are allowed in there and can drop you off right in front of the hotel).
Our room was fine - standard, typical for an Austrian mid-range hotel, so was the breakfast. The staff was friendly and helpful throughout our stay.
The restaurant in the hotel was surprisingly good - a mix of Austrian and Balkan cuisine - we went one night and were pleasantly surprised.
