So. I am a BIG, BIG 'Sound of Music' fan, and as such, I have wanted to go Salzburg as long as I can remember. We took a day trip from our base in Munich. The trip is relatively painless - about 1.5 hours each way from the Hauptbahnhof. We got off at the main Salzburg station, which is small and was under construction when we went. With that being the case, there was only one restroom available for use. From the station we took one of the 2 or 3 buses that go into old town Salzburg. We got off right near Mozart's Wohnhaus, did a quick tour of that and then walked over the bridge into proper old town. Even with the pouring rain, and overcrowded main street, this is such a pretty city. We didn't get even the smallest glimpse of sunlight, and were soaked to the bone, but could see how glorious the city would be if there was even the smallest semblance of sunlight. I would say, this is a place worth a visit, without a doubt, but make sure that when you visit, you will have a good weather. We were unable to see much of what we had planned due to the rain. But, its a must go city. SO many beautiful cathedrals, buildings and squares. We wandered into one of the many churches for a brief respite and came across a children's choir and had to sit for 15 minutes to just listen to their lovely music. Don't forget to take the train/or hike up to Hohensalzburg, for gorgeous views of the city with the river snaking through.
