“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2011

The location of this hotel is amazing. It's situated just outside Salzburg and is a mere 20 minute walk into the city centre. The site itself is divine, it is nestled off the side of a road in smallish parklike grounds and hugs the side of a large lake which you can walk around.

I stayed with my mother in the Meierhof annex which was, as many people have said, nothing exceptional but for the price (merely 68 pounds for a double room and breakfast) I would have expected worse. The rooms are around average size but are well equipped with all the necessities. They are decorated in a cheerful, cosy style and have comfortable beds and pillows.

Breakfast is served in the Schloss itself in a beautiful room with massive windows and intricate wall coverings and cornices. It's exceedingly atmospheric and the breakfast is also of a good standard with both continental and cooked offerings.

You can also look around the other rooms in the Schloss including the library and Chinese drawing room which are beautiful.

Personally I feel this hotel is ideal if you don't mind being a little bit out of the city and want a different sort of atmosphere and style. Both my mother and I adored it.

This is by far the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in. The location and the place are simply stunning! Pictures don't do it justice, it has to be experienced. My partner and I spent a wonderful 5 days there. One could spend hours sitting on the bench by the lake shore, just communing with nature.
Very helpful staff helped us with all our queries. The cafeteria in the Meierhof served a decent pizza but otherwise there were no meals apart from breakfast to be had.
The room was spacious (we were informed that we had been upgraded) and the mattresses were very comfortable. The silence was very conducive to a good night's rest.
The only downside was the distance from the center of the city. It took about half an hour to walk there. But the great location more than made up for this.
Breakfast in the Schloss dining hall was a sumptuous affair, with at least four different kinds of cold cuts, bacon, sausages, a variety of cheeses, pate, juices and cereals to choose from.
I would unhesitatingly recommend this place to visitors, especially to couples and honeymooners. A more romantic setting would be difficult to imagine.

My daughter and I stayed at the Meierhof annex of Schloss Leopoldskron during our "Sound of Music" "pilgrimage." It was so exciting to walk the grounds where part of the movie was filmed. The hotel's location is not convenient, but there was a nice Italian restaurant we enjoyed across the lake. We were told that one must attend a conference to stay in Leopoldskron, so we stayed in Meierhof, which we were not forewarned had bedrooms like an army barracks. Spartan is a good operative word (dim lighting, no pictures on the walls, gray iron beds that looked as if they might have been brought in from a prison). It would have been funny if we hadn't paid so much for the room. BUT the grounds were lovely and just the knowledge that we were on "SOM" ground (or next door to it) was enough for us. The next morning, we had a delicious and beautifully spread breakfast in the Schloss. Later we were picked up right at our door for a wonderful Sound of Music tour (our hotel was one of the sites on the tour). It made us feel rather special to be staying there :-) Despite the disappointing room, at least we got to stay there - memories we will never forget! (I am late leaving this review. We actually traveled in June of 2009. It got quite warm in the room and we had to ask for a fan. No A/C, but we knew that ahead of time). I hated to give a low rating, but paying that much for barracks room was quite a disappointment.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with a lake view and were so excited to have gotten one - but, altho we were fac...

I no dot normally write caveats but it is needed in this case. If you loved the Sound of Music, do yourself a favor and do not miss coming here with sunny weather. The other reviews are not wrong, service is B&B type (just a bed and a breakfast) reception service is friendly, accommodations in the Meyerhoff house are average (rooms are outdated) even for the pricier deluxe (what we go). Breakfast buffet was very good (but not the best). A big plus is the great hiking/ walking from this location: 30 min to the Agustiner monastery (do not miss it), 25 min to downtown and many other hikes.
So, why is the review Excellent, because this is a great Sound of Music experience. CAVEAT: If you do not care about the Sound of Music, you can find much better accommodations than this. If the weather is not sunny, and you cannot experience the Sound of Music outdoors, there is no reason to come here either.

We booked a room in one of the suites in the main Schloss. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Buffet breakfast was served in one of the halls of the palace and the selection was quite good.

One of the downsides of the hotel was the distance to the city centre (~half an hour walk). Our room also had a shower-over-bath which had a partition wall that leaked so that by the time one had finished one's shower, there was a lake in the bathroom. There is also no kettle for making tea/coffee in the room. For the amount paid for a suite, you really are paying for the experience of staying at 'The Sound of Music' palace. Alternatively there is the option of one of the rooms across the driveway, which costs substantially less and is probably more value for money.

Not the most accessible location to see Salzburg, but we were delighted to have stayed here at least once as we are SOM fans.

The rooms are really only okay, definitely not matching up to our unrealistic dreamy fantasies of what a room in a schloss may be like. Comfortable considering we only went back to sleep, and adequate.

Breakfast was one of the main highlights. The Venetian Room was breakthtaking and the spread was decent. Exploring the main building was fun and the library in particular was so charming and tranquil. We spent the most languid morning admiring the gorgeous lake, just taking in the view and humming SOM songs.

Will not stay here again because of the location, one time is good enough to create beautiful memories. If you choose to stay here, hopefully you have more time in Salzburg and therefore do not mind a bit more travelling, and your stay will not be complete unless you spend some time sitting by the lake.

My family spent there just 1 night and day, but we were amazed mostly because of the beautiful surrounding and Salzburg sightseeing- the hotel is OK (not the highest quality equipment, but it somehow was not the most important). The hotel has private closed during the night parking. We felt safe there and a bit like in older times:-) Breakfast was very good, in the breathtaking ballroom. I highly recommend taking a walk to the city center from Schloss - wonderful experience!
