“Breathtaking view...worth the climb”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2015

The steps from mozartplatz take you up to the spectacular views of the nonnberg convent. Although this is still a working convent you can still access the church and grounds around the convent. Well worth the climb as you get views from both sides.

“Sound of Music Site”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2015

It's was a nice walk up hill from town. Great views along the way. I'm told it was used in the filming of the Sound of Music. It was the Abby. Nothing fancy... You have to pay to turn the alter lights on. :)

“Gorgeous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2015

We didn't get to go inside, but even just the little courtyard was gorgeous. And once up the top, the view of Salzburg is incredible.

“Probably the most Original Sound of Music Sight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2015

Not only did they film here for the "How Do you Solve a Problem like Maria" and for the opening of "I have Confidence," but they also filmed the gates when the nuns answer the doors twice: first for the children and secondly for the Nazis. Some people say they didn't actually film here, but if you buy a copy of TIME right now for the 50th anniversary edition you'll see pictures of camera crew and Julie in her grey novice outfit standing around with flowers in her hair.... Anyways....

The convent is a very spiritual and quiet place of God. The best way to get here is to go down the hill after viewing the fortress and take a right at the bottom of the hill. If you keep going straight you can't miss it. Its a pretty secluded area. You'll immediately recognize the famous gates and the inner courtyard where Julie starts her journey to the bus stop. It's a great place to see where the real Maria was actually a novice and got married to the real Captain Von Trapp.

The small chapel on the inside where the real life couple got married is simple yet stunning. There are some old frescos and a very old alter piece at the front. I don't think there is a better place in Salzburg to visit the "heart" of the Sound of Music.

“Sound of Music”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2015

You can't go into the Nunnberg Convent but you can visit the church where part of the Sound of Music was filmed. It is not on the tourist route, therefore very quiet and peaceful. Between 7am and 7pm it is possible to visit the church and you may, depending on time hear the Nunns singing - not the Sound of Music!
