We spent a few days at Schloss Haunsperg at the end of Dec, 2013. We were absolutely amazed with everything - the exterior and interior of the castle, warm attitude of the hosts, unique atmosphere of staying in such an unusual place (the castle is by the way cultural heritage in Austria), and, certainly, breakfasts. Erica and her husband did all they could to help us with planning the route to Salzburg, booking restaurants and even drove us to the bus or train stations on a couple of occasions.
So, if you want to spend most of your time in Salzburg, and think the castle might be a bit far away for everyday travel - don't worry. There are lots of easy connections to and from Salzburg either by bus or by train (around 20 min one way), and with just a little planning you will have no problems. But the uniqueness of the place is a huge advantage compared to numerous hotels in Salzburg. By the way, Hallein, where the castle is located, is a very nice old town with the museum of its citizen Franz Gruber ("Stille Nacht" song author) and an ancient salt mine now acting as a museum - hence the name SALZburg.
