“A very elegant hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2010

The hotel is greatly located downtown Salzburg on the right bank, near Mozart's house and Mirabell. Rooms are very elegant and very well equipped. The pillow menu is amazing. Breakfast was good, having healthy but good food and of course the great Sacher Torte. I had no time to enjoy the piano bar but I had good comments. Not to omit the bathroom amenities from Sacher, including the chocolate body lotion!!!

From the minute you walk into the Sacher you know you are at a great hotel. The warmth of the front desk staff is a wonderful welcome after a long trip. There is no better located hotel to see Salzburg. There was a renovation going on at the property so there will soon be more renovated rooms. We had two unrenovated rooms and found them perfect. Big bathrooms, clean, quiet AC and comfortable bed. Big TV. Nice sized gym.
Hotel's concierge handled all our show tickets, restaurants and tours. All worked out perfectly. The hotel even lent our family bikes to tour around Salzburg, which we recommend completely as the town has long and safe bike trails

The Hotel Sacher has a distinguished history and an excellent reputation. It deserves both. We were warmly and very efficiently welcomed when we checked in and those two qualities were constantly displayed by the hotel staff throughout our four night stay. The concierge was so helpful in helping us organise our sightseeing and day trips - both within the historic city of Salzburg itself and also into the wonderful landscapes of the Bavarian Alps and the Salzkammergut. The Sacher provides a great breakfast and we enjoyed eating in the Sacher Cafe and Grill. It was wonderful to eat outside with the scenery of the river and old town as a background. In the evenings it was so relaxing to take a drink in the Bar with the piano playing.

The Hotel Sacher is a great place to base yourself for a holiday in this beautiful and historic region.

Salzburg was the last stop on our trip and a very pleasant one for which the Sacher helped make the experience. The location is ideal and the view from the cafe/patios very nice. Yes, it is a bit old world and fussy...but who wants sleek and modern in Salzburg? Service was quite good and helpful...save for one "it's time to go home" bar maid. Room we had was certainly acceptable but not the level of upgrade I would have expected as a LHW frequent traveler. Apologies for that were forthcoming and due to the renovations (of which we heard no sound).
Breakfast was well done...I mean all the Sacher cake you can eat!!!

I really can't recommend staying at this hotel until they've completed their renovations.

First, the good: as Amex FHR guests, we were upgraded very substantially. We paid for a Deluxe Junior Suite but were given a Deluxe 1-Bedroom Suite with a phenomenal view of Salzburg over the river. The decor was a bit fusty and some things did not work (the bathroom door would not close fully, for instance) but you couldn't argue with the space or the view.

The location is hard to beat. The views of the city from this hotel are fantastic and you are outside of the milling throngs of tourists, but can be right in the old center of Salzburg in 3 minutes by walking over the footbridge next to the hotel. You're also extremely conveniently located to Schloss Mirabell and the Mirabell Gardens.

The buffet breakfast is pretty nice. Service is sketchy (we were never offered cooked-to-order eggs after the first morning, for instance) and not overly friendly, but the quality of the food is good.

Now, the bad: The front desk/Concierge desk (they seem to share a single desk) personnel were not overly helpful. We had an issue with the (very expensive) Wi-Fi connection, which is supposed to be handled by the Concierge, but he basically blew us off. (We solved the problem on our own.) Checkout (which, unintuitively, takes place at a window around the corner from the front desk) took FOREVER. They told me to stand there, and then ignored me for at least 15 minutes while they took care of other matters at the front desk. I was really getting very annoyed.

However, the main issue here is the renovations, the noise of which is extremely loud and obtrusive. Hammers and ear-splitting power equipment were going as early as 7:25 am and continued until as late as 7:00 pm on weekdays. (It seemed that the workmen knocked off on weekends, as there was no noise on our last morning, a Saturday.) This made it impossible to enjoy our lovely suite if we wanted to rest in the afternoons after a day of touring the city.

When the renovations are complete, this might be worth a try. For now, run fast the other direction!

Dear Madame, dear Sir! First of all we would like to thank you for having chosen the Hotel Sacher Salzburg for your recent visit to Salzburg and for sharing your open feedback with us on Trip Advisor. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your Deluxe One-Bedroom Suite and the outstanding view overlooking the old town of Salzburg as well as the location in general. It is with great regret that someone of our staff members didn’t act in a polite, friendly and helpful manner as it should be self-evident for a five-star hotel. Please be sure that this is not our usual interpretation of highest service quality and we will definitely follow up on this point of criticism. To improve the standard of our property continuously, we are currently renovating some of our rooms. Our mission is to combine traditional luxury with modern comfort, in a way of highest standard and quality. We apologize for any inconveniences due to noise pollution during your stay. Gladly we would have moved you to another suite, knowing about your disappointment. Dear Madame, dear Sir, we would be very grateful if you would accept our apologies and if you will give us another chance to show you the service and excellence that the Hotel Sacher Salzburg is known for. If you visit Salzburg again in the near future, please make your reservation directly through my office so that I may assure you of my personal attention. In the meantime with best regards form Salzburg! Elfi Kammerhofer, Managing Director

We were so disappointed with this hotel and with Salzburg in general. Hotel - stuffy hallways; fussy, cramped, tired furnishings; threadbare rugs; painfully uncomfortable bed. The hotel was under renovation and in order to have a room with functional air conditioning we were placed in a room directly over the construction - which started promptly at 7am each morning. Even our attempt to enjoy a cocktail in the lounge overlooking the city was foiled as the lounge was booked by a private party. Salzburg was by and large a tourist trap - and a smelly one completely overrun with horse-drawn carriages. We wished we'd stayed in the beautiful Bavarian countryside instead.

Great hotel overall. Convenient located and great service. The hotel bar is reasonably priced and was very popular on the piano evenings.
Try to get a room facing the river and away from the lift as it could be a bit noisy facing the main road.
