“Fantastic Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2007

We have just returned from a weeks skiing holiday in Bad Hofgastein where we stayed in the Osterreichischer Hof. What can I say we had a fab time and this was largely to do with the lovely hotel. I don't know what the other person was going on about the lack of this and that on the food front all I can say is they must be very picky people because the food was stunning out of this world I couldn't have faulted it and I thought I was a fussy eater (you obviously just can't please some people!). What they said about the evening meal is correct you have to pick at breakfast what you want out of 3 dishes but they always give a veggie option which I had most nights and the quality is incredible (I thought). The fact that it joins to the Alpen Therme is brilliant most people go in their dressing gowns! The village is beautiful skiing fabulous I wish I was back there. The friendly nature of the hotel is what was so lovely a really personal service. The owner comes round at dinner time to make sure everything is ok and they go out of their way to help you.
Go and stay at this hotel its a real treat!

My wife and I stayed at the Sacher in January 2006 on the Sacher and the City Plan. It included breakfast and a standard room.

We arrived at about 11am and were promptly checked into our room. We were upgraded to the next level room at no charge. We had a street view room and it was extremely quite. We never heard any noise from outside. While a river view would have been nice, I do not think we missed it that much.

The hotel is convenient to the old town. A short walk across the pedestrian bridge is all it took. The staff was friendly throughout our stay and breakfast was wonderful each morning. The hot chocolate was particularly excellent and was the best my wife and I had ever tasted. We bought some to bring home with us.

If you go at the right time of year, this hotel is very affordable with rates below 200E for a standard room. I would definitely recommend it.

If you are looking for a bit of luxury in a city break, then this is the place. It is a very traditional Austrian Hotel but full of opulance and very upmarket. Take no notice of any reviews complaining that they weren't in rooms on the river. We were in a road facing room, and it was fine and not noisy. If you can get a river facing room, it would be lovely though, really nice view.
It's just a short walk over a bridge to the main town, which is full of designer shops and some amazing places to go and eat. The airport is only 15 minutes away, so it's perfect for a short citybreak.
There is a gorgeous piano bar, which is just wonderful to come in from the cold, have a glass of champagne and relax in one of the comfy chairs. You'll never want to get up again! The staff make you feel like royalty.
It's very expensive, but hey, you're worth it every once in a while. For any ladies, who enjoy getting dressed up, go for it. There are lots of Italian couples staying there who go great guns for style, and there were plenty of nice old chaps, in a shirt and tie at dinner. It reminded me a bit of an Agatha Christie style hotel.
It's everything you would expect in a 5 Star Hotel right down to the fluffy robes and slippers and home made, designer chocolate on the pillow.
Guys, if you want to surprise your Mrs and take her somewhere romantic, you won't go far wrong here.

Just backed from a two night stay at this lovely Hotel, from 13-15 December. The common areas, as well as the atrium skylight and marble staircases were simply ornate and fabulous! So were the interesting pictures of the Hotel's past guests. Also, cakes at its Cafe Sacher was also extremely yummy and good!

But the most memorable part of the stay at the Hotel Sacher Salzburg has to be dinning by the River Salzach at 7am each morning (breakfast included). At winter time, the sun only rises at about 7.30pm, so it was really romantic dinning in the dark and watching the sun rising slowing. Whatsmore, breakfasts was served in one of their best docorated restaurants, the Roter Saloon. What a treat! Breakasts was considered good but for a hotel of such reputation, we thought it could have been better.

The next thing we loved was our Deluxe room facing the Old Town and the River Salzach, with a balcony. At only 330 euros, it was definitely worth the splurge! Location wise, as mentioned by many viewers, couldn't have been better - far away from the noises but yet, close enough to the action.

The only two dissatisfactions we had were the early check in at 9am was not obliged till 11am, as well as the somewhat large but sparsely furnished room. After having flown some 16 hours into Salzburg, via Vienna, we had expected an early check in to rest and unpack. However, even at winter time, the room was not ready. Fortunately, we had flown Business class, and had slept well on board Austrian Airlines. So off we go, paid a visit to the Hosensalzburg as well as the Old Town area.

All in all, Salzburg is indeed a beautiful place for a short vacation. But it was a little too small and too touristry. Fortunately, we joined the Sound of Music tour for an overview of the surrounding area. Also, the Christmas markets are nothing compared to the ones in Vienna or Munich.

Happy Holidays!

We stayed at the Hotel Sacher for 2 nights as part of the 'Sacher and the City' deal (€190 per night including breakfast). Overall, we had a fantastic time. The rooms were fantastic - the bed was extremely comfortable and I was tempted to take the pillows home with me. The mini sacher tortes on the first night were also a nice touch!

Hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating, they arranged tours (you can buy tickets at the front desk) and hotel pick-ups. However, the hotel is very conveniently located so you can walk everywhere.

Breakfast was fantastic (although it was included in our rate) and we also had a great light dinner in the Cafe Sacher when we were too exhausted to go out.

The only slight negative was that the hotel was very warm, although that was easily solved by opening the windows to let some fresh air in before going to sleep.

I would definitely recommend!

We arrived at the hotel at about 11.00pm having booked a deluxe room via Leading Hotels of the World. We were given a beautiful room overlooking the river. We gradually came to realize it was less than perfect.

1. The room was very warm. Unfortunately the hotel disconnects the airconditioning at the end of the summer so it couldn't be cooled except by opening the very large windows which had no mechanism for locking them open and in any case created a huge draft. Even if the airconditioning had worked it couldn't have been used because the fan was misaligned so the blades touched on something or other making a sound like a machine gun. They never did fix that

2. The room has internet capability which works through a keyboard connected to the TV. Unfortunately it doesn't work. First of all, the keyboard was dead but even when that was fixed the system couldn't be made to work even by the management

3. I had ordered a double bed. There are two single beds in the room pushed next to each other. I asked for them to be made up as a double bed. The hotel said that couldn't be done - they say in Austria this is a double bed!!!!

As far as the rest of the hotel is concerned it was very average. The breakfast buffet was barely average considering the cost.

Altogether the cost for two nights was well over €900 - over $1250. We moved on to the Hotel Bristol in Paris - a better hotel in a more expensive city and had a much better room for the same money.

After arriving at 6pm at the Hotel Sacher we were efficiently checked in and ate in house. I expected it to be overpriced and poor quality but in fact the food was very good and service excellent. We had a view of the river and up to the castle from the salzach grill. The food was tasty and well presented.

The rooms were not overly large (some people would proabbaly say small but i have had smaller for much more $$) they were decorated beatifully had a good TV and a sitting chair as well as a desk work area. The rooms were decorated individually although I notcied the lounge covering in ours was identical to the wallpaper in the children's room. The beds had curtains to draw not 4 poster though. There was a platter of chocolates waiting for us when we checked in.

We were allocated 2 rooms and not told which room was which so we chose the larger room with essentially the twins into king. It had traditional furnishings and looked distinctly Austrian. The children’s room had different furnishings but was essentially the same. It had a larger bathroom but only a standard double bed. Both looked out onto a side alley.

Turndown was in the form of a Sacher sample and the kids had scoffed theirs and the welcome chocolates before sleeping.

Wha stood out for me was the level of service. it was defintiely five star, they organised reservations at restaurants (other than the Salzach grill which BTW was very good and not overly expensive). Sometimes when travelling with teenage kids you at such places you get the get rid of them quick not big spender approach, not here. We felt welcome.
