“Excellent location in Salzburg, outstanding service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

We just came back from a 3-day city trip to wonderful Salzburg. Hotel Zur Goldene Ente is perfectly located in Old Town Salzburg, a footstep away from the main Christmasmarket and the shopping area. Don't expect a smooth operation like the Sheraton or other main hotel brand. The hotel is located in an ages old building. Rooms, at least the 2 where we stayed in as a family of 5, were spacious with good, decent beds.
Service by staff is really efficient with a lot of local knowledge of Salzburg and surroundings. Ulrike and her colleague will arrange tours and give advice of places to visit.
Breakfast is good with an assortment of fresh breads and croissants, cheeses and hams and fresh coffee (or cappuccino).

I would highly recommend this place, but I understand that the place will close on 7 January due to change of ownership, and I am not sure what the plans for the future will be.

Remember this building is 600 years old! The rooms are small with outdated decor, things that could be improved on are the thread bear towels and inconsistent hot water flow. The mattress is only 6 inches thick which gave me a very sore back, this has never happened before this bad.The hotel manager is excellent, virtually does everything. If you are after location this is great, placed in a small alley, there is heaps of atmosphere, but it isn't a luxury home away from home!

The Golden Ente was exactly the safe haven we needed for so many reasons. Everything about this hotel exuded warmth and welcoming. Ulrike and each member of her staff took such good care of us. When we arrived I had a terrible cold but we were well cared for and it really ease the pain.

Such a lovely 700 year old hotel with great character on a storybook like street. Beautiful stone stair steps and arches (there is also a Lift which is nice when arriving and departing.) Our room was very clean, comfortable, and quite spacious. The bed linens were the softest I can remember in a long time. The bathroom was well appointed with everything you might need. Nice deep bathtub too. Even the cozy, soft warm robes in the rooms were a comfort to me. This may seem small, but we really liked that there were so many areas to hang things… in the room itself, a nice long hook rack for your coats, scarves, hats by the door and in the bathroom behind the door another long hook rack behind the door. A lovely large wardrobe for all your clothing. (there were also two umbrellas in the wardrobe for your use)

We found it very quiet at night, which was such a blessing.

The breakfasts were very delicious and we felt completely pampered by the staff. Of course everything about our stay I am equating to how I felt physically at the time due to my horrible cold. If I could not be in the comfort of my own home, I would want to be at Golden Ente with Ulrike and her glorious staff caring for us. They really made us feel that cared for.

The location was perfect! So beautiful and quaint. We felt very lucky to be there! One other thing, emails prior to arrival were answered with an immediate reply. Ulrike even graciously confirmed a reservation for us which was very kind!

To me, with hotels and restaurants, it all boils down to whether you would return or not. We would be so happy to have an opportunity to return to this hotel again, it was the best hotel experience we had during our 12 day journey, we seriously feel blessed that we were able to stay here. Thank you so much Ulrike!

Ulrike single-handedly provided our family with one of the best experiences (lodging or otherwise) of our 24-day sojourn throughout Europe. She was extraordinarily helpful throughout the booking process, including friendly accommodations of several schedule changes that we requested. She positively doted on us at breakfast both days and insisted on helping us pack lunches - gratis - for our bicycle tour (Fraulein Maria's - highly recommended!). We truly felt at home in "Ulrike's house"!

Our apartment on the top floor was fantastic ... spacious, well-decorated, and with great views down to the Goldgasse. The hotel itself could not be located more conveniently. The pedestrian zone of Salzburg is magical, and nearly every significant sight in the city is reachable with a reasonable walk from the hotel. Parking is a bit distant, but it's not overly difficult to navigate the walk from the garage to the hotel. Lots of great dining and shopping within a few blocks.

Top marks for Ulrike and the Goldene Ente!

This hotel is a real charm. Wonderful Rooms in a600 year old building located on a perfect Salzburg street and all within walking distance of everything you could possibly want to see. Great staff! The ground floor restaurant is a separate entity but try to not miss it. The food is pure Austrian, reasonably priced and very good. Do miss the Nockrel dessert!!!
Keep in mind, we were told, this hotel will close on or about Jan 1, 2014 for 6 months of reno and reopen under another name. Try to get in before things change...............

Booked die Goldene Ente after reading excellent reviews online. Arrived in Salzburg after a long traffic filled ride in the pouring rain. The hotel is in the old city and you cannot drive there, despite what your GPS says. This is not noted prominently anywhere and we actually had to pull over and call the hotel to find out how to get there. We had to park in a garage that was at least three blocks and a town square away. Also, there are columns that pop out of the street after 10 or 11 am that allow street cleaners and delivery trucks to drive through the old town in the am--you don't want to get stuck in old town after that.

Our room was "ok". Very close to the neighboring buildings. Furnishings were old and mismatched. Room was clean. Windows did not close all the way and breakfast was ok. Everything was just ok. Meh
