“Great location and lovely hotel.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2012

We recently stayed at the Hotel Goldene Ente and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The rooms were surprisingly large and although fairly basic, were very comfortable. The location was fantastic - you can't beat it. Right in the old town within walking distance to all the amazing sights. Ulrike (the manager) however was the standout - she was an absolute gem. So helpful and lovely. She helped us with directions, our itinerary, tickets to the Marionetten Theatre and so on. Although there are no amenities in the rooms, she was helpful in letting me use the breakfast room to heat bottles for our youngest child. Our stay would not have been the same without her. I could not recommend this hotel more highly.

The hotel was in a great location, right in the heart of Salzburg's Old Town—very convenient for seeing the sights and strolling the old lanes soaking up the ambience. (Mozartplatz, the Salzburg Cathedral, Kapitelplatz were right around the corner.) Breakfast was a wonderful variety of food and drink (meats, cheeses, boiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, fruit, breads, juice, tea, coffee, latte and more) and the cheerful manager, Ulrike, was buzzing around being the perfect hostess making sure everyone had what they needed.

Ulrike was helpful at pointing out places of interest and answering our questions—she was like a mother hen checking on our daily plans and making sure we had enough information, breakfast and latte to go forth and conquer our sightseeing day.

There is free Wi-Fi and a guest computer, however, the Wi-Fi only works near the guest computer on this main floor near the office (not in the rooms). It was very hot while we were there (mid to high 30's) and it was rather uncomfortable sleeping without A/C—having the windows open only helped a little—however, these very high temperature were unusual, though.

We found the Salzburg Card a very worthwhile purchase.

The restaurant downstairs is not part of the hotel, but we did find it convenient for a drink and a bite to eat before going up to our room for the night.

Salzburg Highlights: the Salzburg Cathedral, the walk (Monchsberg) along the cliff from the Fortress to Stadtalm for a picnic table lunch and gorgeous view over the town, Augustiner-Brau-Stubl (beer garden), the gardens of Mirabell Palace (& concert in the Marble Hall) and an expensive but worthwhile drink on the roof of the Stein hotel at sunset. Nearby Hellbrunn Castle with it's surprise fountains was especially welcome during that hot snap and from there it was easy to catch the bus to Untersberg for a cable car ride up the mountain for great views and hiking.

We visited this hotel in the week leading up to Christmas and could not have asked for a more special experience during our time in Salzburg. Getting to the hotel was easy – we took a taxi to the end of Goldgasse, walked a few doors and there was the large sign board outside. We were a little confused – downstairs is a bar/restaurant, and when we opened the door we were standing in a small landing – so made our way up the very steep set of stairs – where we found reception (and Ulrike) waiting for us. Ulrike was incredibly welcoming and right away we knew we had booked the right place for our stay; she took us up the next flight of stairs to our room and came in to make sure we knew where everything was and how it all worked. The room was big with a table and chairs in the corner, windows overlooking the street, a four-poster bed complete with romantic curtains, and another bed for our son – and plenty of room to move around! The bathroom was also large.

The hotel is 600+ years old, with very thick walls – and as a result of that, there is no wi-fi available in the rooms. I was happy to overlook that minor point – there was wi-fi available in the computer area near reception, which was more than adequate.

Breakfasts were amazing! There was a vast array of food including cereals, yoghurt, breads, meats, cheeses and eggs. Ulrike remembered our names every morning and even knew what we would have to drink – it really made us feel at home, being welcomed by name each time we came down the stairs.

The hotel itself was in a fabulous location, right in the heart of the old centre of town. You could walk everywhere and it is such a picturesque area. All of the Christmas markets were happening when we were there, and it was such a special feeling to walk out of the hotel and be amongst the Christmas decorations and yummy market foods within a minute of leaving our room.

We ate in a couple of nearby restaurants during our stay – the Saran Restaurant, just down the street from the hotel, had great food; the creamy garlic soup was amazing. We had a fabulous lunch at a nearby café called Picnic, which had great food, but too many smokers indoors for my liking.

On our last day when we went to pay our bill, Ulrike presented us with a boxed chocolate figurine (similar to Sinterklaas) each. Our 11-year-old was especially taken with Ulrike’s kindness and generosity and talked about her for a long time after our visit. We all have such fond memories of our stay and will definitely return one day – and hopefully next time we will have more than 2 days of snow during our stay!

We enjoyed our stay at the Goldene Ente. It had the European charm we are always looking for when traveling out of the U.S. The location was perfect for us, right in the middle of the Old Town, and in a "Pedestrian Only" zone. It was a quick walk to the bus line that took us to other sights in Salzburg.

We had the family suite (2 adults, kids 13 and 18) and it was great! It was HUGE, with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms (one without shower), and even a kitchen. It was so nice to feel like we had room to breathe. There was even a couch to relax on. The only downside about the kitchen was that it smelled mildewy, probably from the refrigerator being unplugged. But, we weren't cooking anyway so we just closed the kitchen door and it took care of the smell.

Ulrike was terrific and so helpful. She greeted us with a smile every morning at breakfast, and was quick to help us decide what to do each day. Unlike most hotels where we feel like they just go through the motions, we felt Ulrike truly wanted us to have a great time in Salzburg! She also helped us out of a bind, when we unexpectedly had to come to Salzburg 2 nights earlier than planned. She was able to accommodate us the extra nights which was a huge help.

The only real criticism is the lack of wifi in the rooms. Granted there was one computer available for use near the reception. But these days, almost all hotels have wifi access in the rooms. It's nice to be able to surf the internet at night relaxing in your room, checking email to keep in touch with people at home, and perhaps planning activities for the next day and buying tickets for whatever you are doing. Not to mention, 2 out of the 2 times I went to use the hotel computer, the chef from the restaurant was there using it and I had to wait. I think this would be a nice touch for hotel guests, and increase the comfort of this hotel.

All in all, it was a great stay. We loved Salzburg...can't wait to go back and we will be staying at Goldene Ente!

I had reserved a room for three nights at the Goldene Ente, but checked out after one. The hotel was charming, the room was clean, but we were in Europe during a heat wave and there was no AC in the hotel. That could have been okay, but our room was two floors above the outdoor dining area and a very busy walkway, so the noise was too much for us, both late in the night and early in the morning.
The breakfast buffet was very nice and the woman in charge was very happy and helpful. If you are traveling during the spring, fall or winter, check out this hotel, but if heat is an issue, look around a bit more.

Room Tip: find a room away from the street.

The location of the hotel is excellent as it is right in the city center on a cobblestone street. Our rooms were clean and quaint with wood beamed ceilings and furnished with antiques. The woman who greeted us upon check in was fantastic - friendly, quirky and funny. Every hotel should employ staff like her.

The breakfast was good, but fairly standard for Austria. Fresh breads, cheese and meat trays, cereals, dried fruit and hardboiled eggs were offered along with fresh coffee, teas and juices.

I recommend the hotel restaurant for dinner. Our food was excellent.

My only complaint about the hotel: The rooms (or at least the one we stayed in) did not have air conditioning. While this normally isn't an issue in this region of Europe, the night we stayed was uncomfortably warm. We slept with our windows open and the street noise was very loud. We heard people talking in the streets until approximately 2am and construction started a few blocks away around 8am.

All in all, I would absolutely stay here again, but not in the warm summer months.

I would recommend this hotel due to the excellent service and extremely helpful manager, not to mention great location. The room was fairly basic as was the shower, but there was nothing wrong with it. Good breakfast too.
