“No car, still BEST hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2012

I LOVED this hotel.

First, we did not have a car like the other reviewers have mentioned being important. Here is how it worked for us- we took tours that would pick us up for free in the morning, then took a taxi (about 12-13 Euro before tip) back to the hotel from the old salzburg part of town. One day, we took a bus and it was about 12-15 minutes to walk down a long, windy, one lane road downhill to the bus stop. About 4,80 euro for a 24 hour pass. I would not recommend walking up the hill as it would be a "get sweaty" kind of walk.

The views at this hotel are AMAZING. The hotel restaurant also had some good food but I would only eat here if you need to as it was expensive and there is a 2,50 euro COVER CHARGE to eat! What?! The menu claimed the kitchen gave a "small gift" but when we asked about it after our meal, they said it was an egg with bacon. They never offered the "gift" to us, even after we asked about it, just told us about it. Weird.

The room is quiet and we had two windows, a balcony, and door to help us keep cool during the summer.

The breakfast was great. They had a really good marbled sweet bread I had every morning (see picture). The drinks were cold and refreshed frequently.

Internet is not very good. Like others have said, I had to go to the lobby area or outside seating to get the connection to work, even though there was a router right outside my room. I was not there for business, so the internet connection was more for pleasure and it did not bother me that I could not use the internet in the room. Also, they charge 5 euro for the password. When we got to the room, we found it in the table drawer. oh well.

Overall, great hotel and nice people working at the front. I would come back here, with or without a car.

Room Tip: Room #9 is a corner room that faces the city and beautiful mountains!

We were a little concerned about staying in this hotel without a car, but when we made the reservation, the manager was able to give us good information about cab fares. It all worked out well. The people running the hotel and restaurant are very friendly and helpful. The room we had was on the second floor with a balcony and view of the city (but not the castle and old city.) It was a little small, but OK. The breakfast was very good, as we experienced time and again in German and Austrian hotels.
Be aware! The restaurant is not open every evening. We arrived at about 7 or 8 in the evening without having eaten dinner, thinking we could eat at the hotel restaurant only to find it was not open that evening. We walked down the hill from the hotel, but in the neighborhood there was very little available.
In the mornings, we walked down the hill (an easy 15 minutes). There is a bus stop at the foot of the hill where we could catch buses to the old city or the train station. We only used cabs when we returned to the hotel.
This hotel was a great value. We found room prices in Salzburg to be extremely high, and this hotel was a steal, especially considering its great view of the city, excellent staff, and breakfast.

Room Tip: If you do not have a car, ask the hotel about taxi fares from the old city or train station to their...

We stayed here for 4 days over a weekend late in June, and our rental Fiat 500 barely made it up the steep hill to the hotel but when we got there it was obvious we had made a good decision. We stayed in a room with a balcony with overview of the city on the second floor, and the view was incredible. The hotel itself is rather old, but it feels homey rather than old in a bad way. The place is run by one or two families and they are very welcoming and helpful. The room was good, no AC which can be rather hot, and this isn't your new age flashy hotel, everything looks and feels a bit old, in a good way.

The breakfast buffet was very good, fresh eggs, yogurt, fruits and bread. There is also a excellent restaurant downstairs, but a good meal for 2 1/2 person is around 80-100 euros. The garden has a small pool which is very adequate for the amount of people staying in the hotel. And the view as always breathtaking.

All in all a excellent hotel, but do take note, staying there without a car is very inadvisable.

Not much to add to what the other reviewers have already mentioned, but what a wonderful hotel this is. Granted; you do have to get yourself up on the mountain and many sat-navs do get confused. The road is clearly marked with signs however and even the experience of rolling up to the hotel was rather exciting.
Service was good, friendly and very clear. Our room clean and good even though the wear and tear is starting to show on certain parts of the old building/rooms. Our shower had a broken hose which made showering a bit of a challenge.
The nights rest was good, even though the room was rather hot (without active ventilation) and some other hotel guests were making quite some noise (singing, shouting) till late at night. One person also tried to get in our room at some point, which I imagine was a case of mistaken room door. The breakfast was great, with a good selection of bread and cold cuts. I recommend you have yours out on the terrace if the weather permits.
If we come to Salzburg again by car, I will likely come here again.

We stayed two nights in early June and were very happy to be a few miles out of town nestled on a hill top overlooking the city. We very much enjoyed eating out of doors at their restaurant into the evening. A beautiful setting and restful stay.

The room was well sized with a comfortable bed. The bathroom and shower was excellent.

Yes, you need a car, but if you want to escape the busy city tourist setting, you can't ask for a better experience!

We stayed two nights at this interesting little family run hotel. Our GPS directed us to turn one street too early and we ended up with an unintentional visit to a farm. Careful if you have a Garmin GPS. The hotel is situated on the side of a hill providing a wonderful view of the city and the surrounding mountains. It is very peaceful yet still only a 10 euro cab ride to the city centre if you don't have a car. They have a very good restaurant serving typical Austrian dishes and the breakfast offered lots of options as well. The rooms were OK. Much of the hotel could use some updating but everything was certainly functional. We had to ask for a different room for my elderly parents as two large flights of stairs would have been difficult for them and there is no elevator.

This is a hard review! I wish I could give 3.5, as this was above average, but just not quite in the league of other hotels I've given a 4 to.

Suffice to say, this is a very high 3. If I was rating the restaurant on it's own, I would give the restaurant a 4 :)

Pros
* Absolutely stunning view and location. Really, there can't be a hotel in the whole of salzburg with a better view
* Dinner in the restaurant for a couple of the nights was great. Excellent food, very lovely waitress.
*Breakfast was simple, not a hot breakfast, but the ham, eggs and bread etc were beautifully fresh.

Cons
* We were there over Easter, and I think it's 2 families that run the place, and they had a function on Easter Sunday. I felt a little bit like we were intruding.
* Rooms are basic, bathrooms are very small, but totally serviceable and clean. Rooms were probably the main reason I couldn't give this place a 4.
* No lift, so definitely no ability for a disabled person to stay. Not generally a problem, but I had unfortunately broken my leg just before we went. Not the hotel's fault at all but it is something to keep in mind if you are at all physically challenged.
* You definitely do need a car. For us, the view and location were well worth it, but I can see how this hotel would be a massive pain if you didn't have a car. Though, we did get a cab into town a few times so we could have some drinks and it was only about 10 euros.

Overall, it was a good hotel, did the job, and the views were absolutely amazing. Helpful staff, good food in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Get one with a balcony over looking the city. just beautiful.
