“lovely hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

Good sized bedroom & foyer area in room - which was great for storing luggage. Large bathroom, great water pressure in shower. Very comfortable beds. The range of food for breakfast was excellent. We got soaked when caught out in a storm and found the foyer area was great to hang our clothes in with the fan going to dry our clothes. The only reason this hotel didn't get an 'excellent' rating is because of their reception set-up. I would suggest they re-arrange the reception area so staff can see customers approaching the desk. As it is now, the staff has their back to you if they are working at their desk/computer. On the two occasions I had to go to reception, I was ignored and left to stand there as staff were too busy working and didn't see or hear me approaching the desk.

We had a 10/15 minute bus journey to get the hotel, and fortunately the bus driver knew exactly where it was because we didn't have very clear directions, but it was well worth it! The hotel is on a quiet road in a lovely residential area and has the nice, cosy 'feel' of the family run hotel it is. Our room was huge, with really comfy beds and a huge bathroom, and was spotlessly clean. We had a lovely breakfast, with lots of choice, in a lovely sunny room decorated in an Austrian style with a lot of personal touches. The highlight of our stay though was the help we received from the lady who I think owned the hotel when, on the Sunday, we discovered that we had lost our tickets for our next day of travel. When we couldn't phone Deutsche Bahn UK, because we had no signal on our mobile, we went to her in a complete state of panic and she was great! In the middle of a family party for her Dad's birthday she persisted in trying to get through to someone at DB who could help us and never once made us feel uncomfortable about it. Also, besides the restaurant at the hotel it is only a 15 minute walk to a nice restaurant in the next village. Would definitely recommend this hotel!

Out of the main town a bit means quiet. St only a short bus ride to the old town with a pass purchasable at the hotel. Friendly atmosphere, personal attention It has everything we needed. Breakfast was good and a fine example of personalized service.

Hotel is 10 minutes from the old town by bus and has an adjoining restaurant and bar. Although the room allocated to my wife and myself overlooked the restaurant outside dining area and road, the noise factor was low and non-disturbing. The room was comfortable and spacious (20 sq m) as was the bathroom. The cleanliness and hygiene is of a high standard.
Breakfast was buffet style and tasty with a wide variety of cereals, breads, cold meats, salads and fruit. The staff were friendly, well organised and helpful- especially with general tourist information, the provision of train/bus schedules and reliable taxi transport.
The hotel restaurant serves excellent dishes at very reasonable prices.
A few flaws disturb an otherwise good performance i.e no tea/coffee making facility in room and an outdated small screen TV with limited channels.

This beautiful hotel exceeded our expectations. The bathroom and the room itself were spacious and clean. Breakfast was rich enough, with cereal, breads, cold meats, a selection of cheeses, dry fruit, and a coffee machine with numerous selections, including cappuccino and cafe latte. Staff was friendly.
We did not get to try the restaurant - we were informed that it was closed as soon as we arrived (even though it did not look closed - we in fact saw a waiter with a tray full of dirty dishes coming out of the restaurant upon our arrival).
It is not within walking distance from the old town/city center. If you have a car, like we did, then there's no problem. Otherwise, you need to do a little research on public transportation options from the hotel to the old town where everything is, before you book.
The front door closes at night, but one can open with the room card.
Overall, great experience, would definitely stay there again!

I just returned from a 21 day trip to Eastern Europe. One of the places that I was most excited about was Salzburg. I am huge Sound of Music fan :-).

I stayed at Gasthof Kohlpeter which promised on its website, "All rooms are with shower, WC, hairdryer, satellite TV and telephone. Wi-Fi internet access is possible for your laptop."

The room had everything but a working hairdryer and Wi-Fi. I was informed at check-in that there was no Wi-Fi access available in my room. Apparently, only two or three of the rooms have Wi-Fi access. So, don't believe everything you read on their website.

To get to the center of Salzburg and most tourist attractions, you must take a bus. The bus trip will take 15 minutes...if you are lucky. I had booked a sight seeing tour and left my hotel one hour early to be sure and not miss my departure time. I waited for 15 minutes and the bus took almost an hour to get to my destination. This was not a problem except that I had to be at a special location at a special time. If you aren't on a schedule, than the bus is an easy, inexpensive way to get around town.

I would not stay at Kohlpeter again. If I return, I will stay closer to the center of town.

We stayed at Kohlpeter for 1 Night in August 2007. Coming from Germany the night before we arrived about 9 AM. The staff was very accomodating and checked us in and held onto our bags for us even though the room was not prepared. They were kind enough to move the bags up to the room when it was ready.

The room itself was spacious and clean. The bathroom was extremely well presented and clean. This is the type of place that works really well for a budget concious traveller. No bathrobes, high end bathroom products, or flat screen TVs here. Just clean quiet accomodations a 10-15 minute busride to Salzburg center.
