“Ups and Downs @ Hotel Stein”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2010

The best thing about Hotel Stein is without any doubt the stunning roof terrace: On the 7th floor you'll find a terrace with a absolut fantastic view on the river Salzach and the old city center of Salzburg. There is a nice bar for a late night drink and also the very good breakfast is served on the top floor. Staff throughout the hotel is very friendly. There is quite a variety among the rooms: Either you go for a quiet one: then you'll have no nice view, or you have a nice view and walls that seem to be made out of paper. The Rooms with view also face the street, but since the windows are very modern you will not hear the noise from the street. The design of the rooms is nice and modern, very good quality bathrooms, beds are wonderful. WATCH OUT regarding the prices: Make sure you do book a room including breakfast and WATCH OUT the prices go very much up during the festival season (around easter and end of July until mid august), you may find better prices through the booking platforms than through the hotel directly. All in all not cheap but worth it!

The rooms are dirty (even the suite that we had )
we asked every day but the room was not cleaned: had to use the same towels, runned out of toilet paper...
a filthy smell in the whole hotel.
no confort in the executive rooms or suite (just some soap that's all.no minibar ,no nothing..
Terrible noise created by the employees ,slaming the doors very loudly all the time.
The service is very poor (we had to beg for a spoon at breakfast or for an empty glass to get orange juice .no eggs on week days and fruits were not fresh)

And overall,The receptionist is dishonest : there were 3 errors in our bill.(we had booked directly with the hotel -highest price-and they were cheating us on the top of that , with no excuses at all when she rewritted our bill) and they charge 5 euros on the bill for the keycard of the room ,so you have to check to be refunded when you give it back....

When we left the hotel early saturday morning ,next to us was a german couple (our age 60 years old) cutting short their stay ,so dissatisfied they were and asking to see the manager...lucky if they succeeded.
The only good point of the hotel is the terrace, but there is no need to stay in the hotel for the terrace especially they do not serve any proper meals there. There are plenty of nice outdoor restaurants in tiny streets in the old town.
We should have left the hotel earlier because our stay has not been a pleasure.

Stayed here a few years ago it was actually in June 2007 after coming from a couple of nights in Munich, i have to say i love this hotel it was brilliant and love Salzburg as well my girlfriend and I both love and can't recommend Hotel Stein enough!!

During the week you eat your breakfast on the room top and its great the staff are very very helpful and they helped us organise our tours which then picked us up at the hotel!! We are now getting married in 6 weeks and would love to go back to Salzburg for our wedding anniversary in 2011!!

Loved the hotel Stein and can't wait to get back!!

We have visited Salzburg several times and stayed at this hotel at considerable expense on the basis of the Stein terrasse (we could have booked any number of other hotels which offered better value for money without a roof terrasse). The hotel sells itself on its location and roof top bar/ restaurant. We arrived circa midnight on Thursday and were advised that the terrasse would be open until after midnight on both Friday and Saturday evenings. It was opened neither. Closed for private prebooked functions; that is hotel guests did not have the use of the hotel bar. When we complained to the receptionist at 6pm Friday evening she said that she would speak with the manager, we are still waiting for any response. Had we been notified that the terrasse was closed we would have cancelled our booking prior to departure and booked another hotel with facilities at a value for money price.
Consequently we paid too much money for an hotel sold on the basis of a facility that was not available. The reception staff were indifferent to the extent that they did not even appear to be listening. If 2 people share a double room you will also have to wait 20 minutes between both people showering; there is no hot water after one person has a short shower.

Don't book this hotel. It looks really good on the web site with fancy photos. But the hotel itself is old and in poor condition. The suite that promises a City/river view overlooks a back lane way with tiny windows. The receptionist is rude and unhelpful. The reception area is old and ugly, nothing like a luxury hotel as descriped on the internet. It feel more like a budget hotel. No one helps with the luggages. When asked about the TV channel, the reply was "I don't watch that channel, I don't know". There is no tea/coffe making facility and the only item in the bath room is liquid soap. Don't expect a mini bar either..The floor board squeaks so badly while you walk. The junior suite we stayed feels like an old room with very low ceiling. The location maybe great. But the poor service and room condition spoils it. Don't stay here or you will be disappointed like me and spoil your holiday because of the poor service and abusive attitude of the receptionist..

arrived for weekend with friends. However roof top bar was unavailable for the whole weekend, with no alternative facilities made for residents, asked to see the manager all weekend and was fobbed off by lying receptionists. Not one aplogy given by any member of staff. Paid hotel price on the basis bar was available otherwise we would of chosen an altenative. would never go back!!!!

I rarely had the impression of being abused by a hotel, but the hotel Stein in Salzburg did it.
The prices are outrageous and the quality of the service is extremely poor. Nobody took our luggage to our room, so I (5 months pregnant ) had to carry them , and of course the old , unrenovated lift is always too busy , so everything through the stairs..On the last day they took our luggages and simply left them 5 hours long in the hall, where anybody could take them !!

They rest on the view their terrasse offers on the city.. The service for breakfast is poor (lucky if you get the croissant and a tea bc nothing works).

The rooms are poorly designed extremely unpractical (no storage, no bins) very loud and no style.

Don't get fooled by the internet site of the hotel you can only be disappointed !
