“Very nice, central hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

We were only in Salzburg one night, but found this hotel to be very nice. Great hotel staff- especially helpful at the front desk. They arranged the tour we took for us, had someone come and pick us up for the tour, fixed our wifi problems very quickly and were helpful in every way possible. Our room was on the 4th floor facing the back of the property and was quiet and removed. Without any AC it was a bit warm, but after opening the window it was pleasant. The beds were very comfortable and the hotel is green (requiring a key card for the lights to save energy.) We took a movie from the front desk to watch at night and had an easy time with check in/out. All in all, a very nice hotel stay.

Room Tip: Only saw our standard room, but it was plenty big for 2 people with a very comfortable bed.

This review is one year late but nevertheless I hope the information is still useful.

Room/hotel
We stayed 3 nights in this hotel in Apr 2012. Got the room across the main hotel building. The room is boutique style with an interesting centerpiece of lamp, sort of like a chandelier. And that really caught my eye! Our room is facing a courtyard so it's quiet. Only complain of the room: the pillow is too soft for any support to the heads! Hence it affects the quality of sleep alittle.

The hotel serves complimentary afternoon tea. We had the afternoon tea once only during our stay but felt it was a very good gesture from the hotel. Bfast selection was fine.. I still remembered the smile drawn on the hard boiled egg cooked in salt.

The indoor pool was very small. And the whole area was very dim. Hence it wasn't very inviting to use.

Another complaint: the check in staff. They weren't rude but they weren't the most approachable too... That's the feeling we got whenever we enquired some information. They weren't very forthcoming.. But they did get a staff to helped us with the bag when we checked in and got a taxi for us when we left..

Location
The old town where all the sightseeing will be is located at the other side of the river. Hence everyday you have to walk 8-10mins to get to the bridge, another 5 mins to walk across the bridge to get to old town. Not the most convenient. However there are plenty of shops and restaurants near the hotel (Linzer Grasse street especially). This old tarven restaurant "Alter Fuchs" located 2 mins from the hotel serves very good food! We found the recommendation from Lonely Planet.

Some info on Salzburg
If you are a fan of leisurely afternoon tea, you might like to visit cafe Tomaselli. Very good ambience ESP at the upper balcony. The waiter will come to your table with a tray of very tempting desserts! And also a place for people watching! Of course there is also the famous cafe Sacher for the authentic Sacher torte! Sit outdoors facing the river! Also get the Salzburg card. It allows entry to multiple tourist attractions. Must do: catch a musical performance. You can get more information of performances and tickets at Salzburg tourism office. Ask the hotel on information of farmer markets. There's one near the hotel, open only on certain day. We saw it while waiting for bus. If you are going St wolfgansee, do note that ferry services do not operate (from St Gilgen) during winter months. The ferry will only operate earliest from May. We learnt that the cruel way. We reached St Gilgen only to find out that the ferry is not in operation. Even the hotel staff did not know that or they would have informed us when we enquired on information of St Wolfgansee!

Hotel Wolf Dietrich- I considered this a tiny bit of a splurge, as I saw hotels that were a bit less costly around Salzburg, but the choices were really overwhelming, so on the recommendation of the Rick Steves guidebook I just stopped looking before I drove myself crazy and booked at the Hotel Wolf Dietrich.

The location is an easy taxi ride from the train station. We actually walked. This was the wrong decision, as it was dark when we arrived and we had a bad map and directions which seemed clear, but we turned too early and ended up walking several (many) blocks too far in the wrong direction before we got turned around and pointed into the right direction with the help of some helpful locals. This was entirely our own fault, but still annoying.

I thought the room (#43 in the main building) was lovely and spacious, with a nice sitting area, and large bath. Our bathroom had an open tub with awesome twirly swirly lights in the ceiling. The window didn’t have much of a view, but we weren’t bothered by any noise either. As we have seen in other European locations, you must have a room key inserted into the little slot inside the door for lights. The key card also worked remotely for the door- that was really cool.

We arrived rather late at night after the getting lost incident, but they still managed to fix us up a couple of sandwiches and beers at the bar.

The bed was a pair of twin beds pushed together to make a king size bed, each with a single size comforter, which actually worked out great! No blanket wars during this stay! The shades were more for privacy on the windows rather than the blackout shades- so if you are looking for that totally dark room at any hour, expect some light. I like it with a bit of light anyway, I find it disorienting to have total darkness in a room.

The safe was adequate to hold various cameras and a tablet.

There was a breakfast buffet included each morning. The buffet had a few hot items- an egg thing, sausage thing, and rotating tidbit, plus fruit, yogurt, cold cuts & cheeses and salmon with the usual fixings, juices, sparkling wine for mimosas, coffee, tea, breads, muffins, and a cold case with various salads, like the carrot salad, curry chicken salad and other fun bits.

There is also an afternoon tea in the bar area, with one or two sweets like cake or mini- parfaits and coffee and tea-- a nice way to take a break in the afternoon to get out of the heat or rain or just off your feet for a bit. It’s not a substantial snack, but not enough if you have missed lunch.

The spa area in the basement is very nice. You can book a massage, and there is a steam room, sauna room, infrared room (I don’t know what that is, so I didn’t try it), and a pool with a button at one end to start a current for stationary swimming. I arranged our schedule to have a morning down there to soak away some of the travel kinks and am very glad that I did.

With the spa, breakfasts, tea, great location and friendly English speaking staff, the Hotel Wolf Dietrich ended up being completely worth the price. Easy booking directly on the hotel web site.

One complaint was slightly spotty wi-fi. It kept cutting in and out, and this did happen at various times and in different locations around the hotel. Also, they had those ridiculous European wall hair dryers that are pretty well useless. My hair may have dried faster if I was just blowing on it...

Easy walking distance from the hotel to the Salzburg old city. I recommend the Salzburg card if you are staying for a couple of days- we got more than our money’s worth out of the card, and visited a few locations we might otherwise have skipped. We especially included the river cruise that was included- especially nice on a sunny day. We also did a Sound of Music tour, and it was nice to ride up into the Alps a bit. The hotel stored our bags during the day that we departed, and called a taxi to take us to the train station when we left, and it came very quickly.

We had a great visit to Salzburg- and the lovely Hotel Wolf Dietrich is a great pick in this charming city.

My family of five recently traveled to Salzburg on vacation. We chose the Wolf-Dietrich due to trip advisor reviews and its location. We arrived early and the staff was very friendly and helped us put our luggage in storage and arrange parking. Parking is an extra 15 euro per day. The parking lot is thee blocks away in a literal cave carved into the mountain. Once returning to officially check in, we were informed that our family had been upgraded into the Papagena (Parrot) and Magic Flute Suites on the third floor. Interesting experience to say the least.

Both suites were very large comfortable and clean. The Papagena suite had a fake tree in the bathroom with a Large red bird looking over the tub. A large mural with carved flowers and a nice looking bird/human hybrid couple was above the bed. My kids especially loved the sound system and DVD player. They weren't quite sure what to do with the "romantik" button.

The Magic Flute Suite had murals of Egyptian pyramids in both the bathroom and bathing areas, not to mention a carved and anatomically correct naked couple lovingly lounging on the headboard. We also had a "Romantik" button which closed the blinds and dimmed the lights.....wow. One look at this room and you understand wy the kids got the Parrot room! (Having just come from Italy...my kids had seen enough gratuitous nudity).

As mentioned above, both suites were very clean, well equipped, and my kids did watch Sound of Music on the DVD player in preparation for the next days tour. The hotel provide free dvds to guests. Breakfast was great with eggs, meats, cheeses, and cereals. The location is just off the pedestrian area with a short 10 minute walk to the bridge. The staff were all wonderful.

Overall a good hotel, I'm just not sure I would request the "romantik suites" for a family trip.

The hotel is in a great location - quiet street but close to everything. Our room was in the Residence - nice to have an elevator. Sleep quality has been up and down on this trip, but this hotel is the best. Very supportive and comfortable beds and pillows. Also, the welcome coffee and cake was a nice surprise. Loved having the mini-fridge. Breakfast was varied and excellent. Would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Our room in the Residence was very quiet.

The beds were so comfortable, and had cotton sheets and pillows that I wanted to steal.

The breakfast was really good. They do something that I've not seen in a hotel before, which was to place lots of nice little quiches and yogurts and breakfast whatnots into individual glasses. This makes it very easy to love the food, even though it's a buffet (which sometimes slightly turns me off because it's a bit too institutional-feeling).

The spa is an unexpected bonus that we just loved at the end of a hard day's touristing. Though it's not large, it has an infrared room thingummyjig that you get only in the highest-class spa resorts; plus steam room and sauna. And a postage stamp-sized pool!

One other point: the service was very nice. Specifically: we made a last-minute change on booking.com to our reservation (36 hrs' notice that we would not need a second room), and there was not a scintilla of annoyance when the proprietor contacted us to confirm and to ask how many guests he would actually be welcoming.

A small niggle is that we had a room that clearly was used by smokers. Eurgh. Would have liked to know that beforehand. But all in all, this place is fantastic. And what a location!

We were booked out to this hotel as our original hotel had over booked. In the end we were very pleased. Great location on a quiet street but seconds from shops and restaurants. Welcome drink was a nice touch and the staff very friendly and welcoming. Free wi-fi is always good as well. Basic but spacious rooms with all you need for a city break. Would recommend to anyone coming to Salzburg.
