“Old fashioned and friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

Really good location (5 minutes from main train station in Salzburg and 15 minutes by walk to the city centre) makes this hotel comfortable for a short stay. The staff is really kind and helpful. Relatively late check out (11:30). Rooms are clean as well as bathroom. For someone it could too old fashioned, but I enjoyed it, because of some atmosphere, great breakfast and helpful staff (they speak english very well). I will recommend it.

Its at a good location (reasonably quite and in a somewhat residential area) but the rooms, showers are very old and cheap. I was given a small soap and a pouch of a shampoo--like those given as samples. Also toilet is one of those old austrian toilets. I realize its a small hotel and it wasnt bad but this was below my expectations for the price paid.

I booked based on lonely planet and booking.com rankings. Not gonna do that again.

There are much better hotels in Salzburg.

The Hohenstauffen is a very friendly, family-run hotel close to Salzburg's main railway station. The location will not be to everyone's liking: it's in a down-market residential area, with takeaway restaurants and a sex shop across the road, and a 25-minute walk from the old town. But we had chosen to stay near the station and found the location very convenient. The neighbourhood didn't feel unsafe.

We were welcomed very warmly upon arrival and treated well throughout our stay.

The decor throughout the hotel is old-fashioned. In the public areas on the ground floor this creates a warm, welcoming feel (the breakfast room is particularly attractive) but the rooms are in need of some refurbishment to meet the expectations of modern travellers. Our room was tired and dated with shabby furniture, an old TV and rather uncomfortable beds. The heating could not be controlled within the room, and we found the room a little cold in the late afternoon and early evening. The bathroom was clean but had the feel of a 1970s B&B, with a shower over the bath, thin towels and little sachets of shower gel.

Breakfast was an excellent cold buffet including fresh fruit and eggs cooked to order.

We were not unhappy with our choice of hotel, and the owners certainly go out of their way to make their guests feel welcome, but it wasn't anything particularly memorable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the quiet side street because the main road is quite noisy.

My wife, eight-year old son and I stayed at this hotel about a month ago. We found the location ideal for our needs, less than a five minute walk from the train station which is the transportation hub for the area. You could easily walk to the center of the city or catch a bus anywhere from the train station. There were several good restaurants within a short walk that the kind folks at the hotel are glad to recommend. The staff could not have been more accommodating helping us with all the information we required for exploring the area. Our room was extremely clean, nice sized and met all our expectations. The breakfast was quite nice with a multitude of choices. They also had freshly baked sugar cookies at the front desk in the evenings. We would highly recommend this quaint and hospitable hotel. On our departure, Linda, one of the owners even gave a gift of fine chocolates to our son. A very nice touch.

Great little hotel with nice rooms, friendly service and a good breakfast. It is about 10 minutes from the train station with short walks to the old town. The rooms have the normal European size but it was very clean, the bathroom was great with excellent water pressure for a long hot shower. The owners are very nice and helpful and if you like to visit the city one last time before leaving, you can leave your luggage at the hotel and pick it up later. Nearby are also a lot of shops and restaurants. If you spend your entire day at a hotel then this may not be the best choice, but if you need to stay in a clean hotel with good service overnight, this is your place.

It was a great hotel for a short stay and especially if you are coming by train. It is just around the corner from the train station and a relatively short walk to Mirabell Gardens and from there to the old town. Service was warm and friendly, room was smallishbut clean and cosy, while breakfast was simple but appetising. While the neighbourhood is probably not the best, i think the pros outweigh the cons.

I recently stayed here for 3 nights and chose this hotel based primarily on its location near the train station. This is a dated hotel, full of character, and run by some very nice owners. The rooms are large for European standards and baths are fine although again dated with 1970 ish yellow plumbing fixtures. We had a double which had a canopy bed and a sofa. It was actually large enough to be a suite. For 90 Euro per night, we thought it was great value in an expensive city. 15 minute walk gets you to the Mirabell Palace area. Trams are available to all areas from the rail station. Breakfast is more than adequate with the owner offering soft boiled eggs in addition the buffet breakfast. Another plus are some fine local restaurants in the area such as the Hirschen and the Weiserhof. I would stay there again based on its location and value!
