“Great setting and delicious food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

While this restaurant is perhaps too far out of town for visitors without a car or bicycle at their disposal, those that make the trip will be glad they did. The setting is fantastic and lovely. Set between the Hellbrunner Allee along the Morzgerstrasse, it is surrounded by some fields and wooded areas. Giving the area a park-like feel on the edge of the city and countryside.
We really enjoyed our dinner. While not inexpensive, it was well worth the price. The menu consisted of mainly traditional Austrian dishes. My benchmark for a successful restaurant and menu, is the proportion of locals that frequent the establishment. The ratio of locals was quite high, thus confirming my good opinion of the food.

“Fantastic!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

The Gwandhaus truly was a great experience in the culinary and scenic sense. We were traveling with my brother-in-law and his family and together we have 5 girls 10 years old and younger. So dinning in Europe with kids is not always a great experience because you get a strong feeling in restaurants that kids are meant to be seen but not heard. But to be fair 5 girls under 10 can be vey loud. I made a reservation at 6:30 and we took the kids beforehand to the great playground in Hellbrun (Sound of Music Gazeebo) which is two minutes from the Gwandhaus. When we arrived they had a long table ready for us on the patio and the weather was perfect. The wonderful residence has beautiful gardens and this allowed us to get some adult conversation in while the kids played on lawn. Beautiful views of the mountains and the castle. Besides our group of nine americans the rest of the patrons were Austrian (I am half austrian and we travel to Austria every other year for vacation and to visit family) and all nicely dressed (always a good sign). The service was excellent and our waiter was very accommodating helping us figure out appropriate portions for the kids. The food is truly austrian cuisine and all of the entrees were very good. I recommend being more adventurous here and trying something that you have not had before as Austrian cuisine is much more than Wiener Schnitzel (and there is plenty of not so good schnitzel in town). However if you are set on schnitzel I tried my daughters and it was excellent. The Gwandhaus was our best restaurant experience in Salzburg as it provides great cuisine in a beautiful atmosphere away from the crowds.

“Simply Austrian”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

Great food, magnificent views, lots of greenary for the children to run around, friendly service, and cold beer. This is not not just a restaurant, the venue is very much Austrian in a large estate-like compound. Visit in the evening time when the wether is nice for the best views. Euro 2.6 per person/child cover charge.

“disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 5, 2013

We came here to have a special meal to celebrate our ruby wedding anniversary and were very disappointed. Having read the rave reviews we had high expectations that were not met. The setting is indeed attractive but when we arrived we were shown to a table inside next to a couple with their baby on the table! We requested another table but despite that fact the restaurant was nearly empty and there were no other reservations the waiter tried to say there were no tables available as they had just had a lightning strike which had affected their electricity. All the tables had candles on them and there was clearly enough light as the storm had cleared and it was getting sunny again. We did change tables but we were not offered one on the terrace where later guests were seated and there were plenty spare tables when we left. Neither of us could drink alcohol so the waiter offered fresh orange juice, only to come back and say they had none would we like apple juice instead? The waiter misunderstood my order so i had to re-order something different. Otherwise he was very attentive and apologetic, some of the food was good but very overpriced compared to other very good restaurants we had been to on our trip - £85 for 2 courses without wine or coffee. Overall it was a big let-down on our special occasion.

“If you like Austria, you will like The Gwandhaus”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

From the outside appearance of being an elegant stately residence, you would never know that the Gwandhaus was originally a clothing factory. In fact it was the oldest clothing factory in Europe and in the main lobby there are fashion decorations behind glass displays to show its history and heritage.
The menu is very typical Austrian and the cuisine is excellent. I suggest you try a light Austrian red wine to compliment your meal. The Austrian wine industry is growing and is offering some nice affordable wines.
Décor on the inside is again typical Austrian, but weather permitting sitting on the patio for outdoor dining is a must with a beautiful mountain view and manicured lawn with a park-like setting. Very good service with a friendly and attentive staff only enhanced the experienced.
