The Gwandhaus truly was a great experience in the culinary and scenic sense. We were traveling with my brother-in-law and his family and together we have 5 girls 10 years old and younger. So dinning in Europe with kids is not always a great experience because you get a strong feeling in restaurants that kids are meant to be seen but not heard. But to be fair 5 girls under 10 can be vey loud. I made a reservation at 6:30 and we took the kids beforehand to the great playground in Hellbrun (Sound of Music Gazeebo) which is two minutes from the Gwandhaus. When we arrived they had a long table ready for us on the patio and the weather was perfect. The wonderful residence has beautiful gardens and this allowed us to get some adult conversation in while the kids played on lawn. Beautiful views of the mountains and the castle. Besides our group of nine americans the rest of the patrons were Austrian (I am half austrian and we travel to Austria every other year for vacation and to visit family) and all nicely dressed (always a good sign). The service was excellent and our waiter was very accommodating helping us figure out appropriate portions for the kids. The food is truly austrian cuisine and all of the entrees were very good. I recommend being more adventurous here and trying something that you have not had before as Austrian cuisine is much more than Wiener Schnitzel (and there is plenty of not so good schnitzel in town). However if you are set on schnitzel I tried my daughters and it was excellent. The Gwandhaus was our best restaurant experience in Salzburg as it provides great cuisine in a beautiful atmosphere away from the crowds.
