“Religious art at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

As a fan of religious art and artifacts, I found the collection here fascinating. Many items are still used in worship. They are presented well with good descriptions about their histories.

Nice museum to see. Lots of artifacts and paintings collected over the centuries. Good place to spend an hour.

“Wow - there is some amazing medieval art and relics here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

This museum is worth an hour of your time. The exhibits are basically split into three. Firstly curios collected over the centuries by the archbishop princes. Secondly religious paintings from 15th to 18th centuries. Thirdly are the amazing gold and silver bejewelled relics and icons covering hundreds of years as well as a close view of the organ from the organ gallery. This museum is reasonably priced and has a wide range of interesting exhibits.

“A few artefacts”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2011

This is a large building with a small collection of religious artefacts and some history, not worth the effort or price

“Cathedral treasuries”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2011

The museum houses in the Domvorhalle (thus directly at the cathedral), Normaly it is forbidden to take pix in its interior, in order to prevent theft, but I managed some. At one point one crosses the organ of the cathedral and to have such a close look at it is very interesting. Mostly objects are on diplay in glass housing and on display are art treasures of the Cathedral and the churches of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. Exhibited are: goldworks, textiles, sculptures and paintings of the middle ages and the Baroque, the Rupertuskreuz from the 8th century, the hosting Dove of Limoges, the precious chalices, paintings of Paul Trogers and reliefs by Georg Raffael Donner. Art and wonder room founded 2nd half 17th century: Baroque curiosity cabinet, taxidermia, fossils, scientific instruments, Crystal grinding work. The "long Gallery" built 1657-1661: Photo Gallery of the archbishops. 1819 the room from Abbey St. Peter was included in this museum. After renovation St. Peter displays now 17 large religious paintings from the collection. The Museum is housed in the gallery spaces of the Cathedral. Because these were used in the past as chapels the rooms still have their baroque decor and offer unusual views of the city and Cathedral. The impressive, 70 m long, corridor is accessible from the Cathedral museum.
