“Outstanding Location and Charm!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2011

This hotel is very quaint and has charm rarely found in tourist hotels today. Some reviews of this hotel have been quite harsh and nearly scared me away but our Austrian advisor assurred us the location was worth any minor defficiencies and I must agree. I don't want an American hotel when I travel to Austria. This was a wonderfully unique hotel. We may have been lucky but our room was very large, away from the street side Irish bars and had a portable air conditioner which worked well when we figured it out. The week we were in Salzburg was exceptionally warm or it would not have been needed. The free wireless internet was a plus as well. My only complaint was my mis-interpretation upon check-in that breakfast was NOT included in our rate and the Euro 44 charge for two seemed a bit pricey although we soon learned Europe is expensive all over. The breakfast at the Cafe Tomaselli (www.tomaselli.at) just around the corner from the hotel was only slightly less expensive but was a wonderful experience and the waiter was outstanding. We thoroughly enjoyed the "Altstadt" of Salzburg from it's heart at the Radisson Blu Altstadt Hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for a room off the river to avoid the noise from the Irish pubs.

We loved this hotel, we booked a 'Superior Room' and it was huge by European standards (& I've lived in smaller apartments). It an ancient hotel (dating back to the mid-1300) which really adds to the charm (e.g., cutout in the stairwell where the candles used to be), but with all of the comforts of a modern hotel (e.g., free WiFi, nice desk, 2 sinks, sofa-chair-table). After 2 weeks in Austria I never did get used to the 'Austrian Twin Beds' though (king sized bed but 2 twin matrices & separate bedding).

We were there for the 4 days of the St Ruperts Festival, which all happened in the squares around the hotel - we had no idea of that when we booked but it was great fun. While that did generate some late night noise (& early morning cleanup) from street level, it was still much less that we would have expected.

The hotel was walking distance from virtually everything, with lots of highend shopping nearby and both a Spar & Billa close by for snacks & stuff.

Because the hotel is old, there are limited elevators, even though we were on the 3rd floor (4th floor in Canadian terms), we used the stairs (& was fun practicing for the tiny 5th floor walkup we dream of owning in Paris someday, but will never be able to afford)

We are a firm believer in public transit, when feasible (& safe), so we took the bus to the airport - it was a Sunday so it was only bus 27 (a milk run) that went, but it was 4.20€ for 2 (<$6cnd) took 25min, runs every 20 min & the stop was ~300m from the hotel (the #8 is a better choice for anything but a Sunday, as its a faster route & a few meters closer to the hotel).

We love Salzburg & the Hotel Altstadt.

I have to agree with the other reviewers who wrote of noise, uninterested staff, stuffy window-closed rooms to silence the noise & overvalued parking and breakfast. Tis true! Our money would have been better spent, elsewhere.

My family is wrapping up a two night stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel Altstadt. The location is great and the service is friendly, but the property has seen better days. While in its hay day I'm sure this was a 5 star property, today it is worn, dated, the rooms relatively dark and without air conditioning and the atmosphere includes other features such as:
1) the laundry bin stored in the hallway beside our room
2) the elevator failing which required that we exit the property via the stairs through the basement
3) a front entrance that is located next to a couple of dank bars and with that the typical empty beer bottles, cigarette butts, etc

If you are looking for a "5 star hotel" and your expectations are relatively high (think a nice Starwood property, not even the Sacher) then you will be disappointed by the Radisson Blu.

Room Tip: If you have advance notice offer to pre-pay. Always push to see if they have a special rate that is...

The location was wonderful and the hotel quite lovely. The room was spacious and comfortable. The down side was the room overlooked the town courtyard (for lack of a better description), which was very pretty, but very noisy. The two nights we were there, there were drunken partiers below that were a little too boisterous. We could also hear the trash trucks and shop owners going about their business. It wasn't a problem with the windows closed but the room was too warm to keep the windows closed. There was an air conditioning unit inside the room but the unit vented via a large plastic tube that had to be placed outside the open window. We had two sleepless nights. However, another plus was the hotel restaurant was marvelous.

Brilliant location - the old city is literally on your door step. Rooms were huge and interconnecting was fantastic. Breakfast is included and food, service and view of the river all add up to a great experience. Free computer & printer in the lobby, room internet connection but there was no wifi in room (but they were working on it!) Concierge were friendly, nothing was too much trouble, they booked sound of music tour, bike hire, marionette concert tickets, hairdresser, and even made good restaurant suggestions. All in all we had an awesome stay in this very beautiful hotel ( 5 star) only negative is the lift can only take 3 people at a time! Would stay here again.

We stayed for two nights and it was the worst hotel of our two week trip. The location is good, the rooms are very large. However the rooms are not well lit at all, it felt like staying in a dungeon. Even with all the curtains open it is still dark. One of the lights was broken anyway so that didn't help. The bath was small and uncomfortable and the glass screen wouldn't stay where it was meant to. The shower broke as well. We complained so they moved us into another room for the second night. The shower was better there and the lights worked. But just as dark. Also, there are so many places in the room to stub your toe on, little rises in the floor coming out of the bathrooms and other places, only a matter of time before someone breaks a toe really! I didn't enjoy it. For what it costs it is not worth it. Oh and the front desk staff weren't particularly friendly either.
