It had been a long day of touring around Salzburg seeing the sights and we were starving! We asked our hotel for several recommendations, Pescheria Backi was one of them. We actually tried to go to an Italian restaurant nearby but as we were walking up a tour bus stopped in front and the guide rudely pushed us out of the way so that she could get her entire bus seated. So we were told to wait, but looking at the size of the restaurant that would have been hours. But I digress, so we went to plan B which was Backi. No one was particularly craving fish, and since we were so far from the ocean we didn't have high expectations, but hunger made the decision for us. We walked into the restaurant and were instantly welcomed and led to a table for the 6 of us. There were no menus, but the waiter came over to explain the options for the day. We didn't really know what we ordered, but were told it would be good. Fair enough. He even picked out a bottle of wine for us to split (which turned into 2 bottles (maybe 3?)). Soon enough the appetizer plate (or shall I say platter) arrived with a wide variety if fish including shrimp, salmon, tuna, mackerel, and others I'm sure. Most of it was smoked. I found the mackerel to be not so delightful, but that's probably a personal taste. I don't like salmon either, but it was ok. Everything else was very good. For the main course we again received a platter of fish to share which included salmon, tuna, swordfish, and something else. The salmon was amazing this time (I don't like salmon, remember). It was a lot of food to share, so we passed on dessert. Overall it was a good decision, but you must be a fan of fish! We were offered nothing else. They apparently buy fresh fish in the morning, so the menu (or lack there of) will be based upon whatever the chef gets that day. Very interesting, and very good.
