Our first night in Salzburg last summer, Friday, July 20, we hurried up the block from dinner at the Stieglbrau Restaurant at the Hotel Imlauer to take in a performance of The Sound of Music. In our haste we had forgotten our ticket confirmation sent by email before we even left for the trip. The ticket taker was nice enough to let us in anyway after we identified ourselves. They had a sign that said no photography, but I recorded the audio of one of the songs on my camcorder in my purse as a souvenir. During intermission I grew bolder and snapped shots of several of the costumed marionettes behind glass cases in the lobby. They didn't lose money on me. I went up to the counter and bought lots of postcards anyway. The performance was obviously unlike anything I'd ever seen before except in the movie itself. There probably is another marionette theater somewhere, but I don't know where it is. As far as the singing went, it wasn't Julie Andrews. But it was certainly clever and showed what entertainers can do with marionettes. The theater was old and historic. Don't miss it when you are in Salzburg, especially if you can walk to it. You'll probably end up strolling through the Mirabell Gardens right next door the way we did.
