“Dreamy suite in Salzburg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2009

We were only staying one night because of our tightly-scheduled tour of Bavaria and the Black Forest, but, as soon as we entered this room, I wanted to stay here the entire trip.

We booked this hotel online with points and were upgraded to an exceptional suite (room 22). Even if we had paid for it, it would've been well worth it. For my money, I would've asked for the suite. Better to splurge and get the dream rather than miss it by a few dollars.

The suite had a small foyer, living room, huge bathroom, and a separate bedroom that was one step up from the main floor with its own office niche. The view was into the courtyard, but that was the only drawback. I marked this as plush, but that doesn't quite capture the essence of this luxury hotel. It had an aura of aristocracy without any smugness. The bathroom was so perfectly appointed that I was actually enticed to take a bath - a rarity in hotels for sure. On one side of the old townhouse is the main entrance with the reception area. On the opposite side is the door that opens to the old narrow shop-lined streets of Salzburg. This is the way you will be going in and out of the hotel. If you walk out and go to the right, it's a very short distance to Mozart's birthplace.

If you are having your car parked (valet only), drive right up to the front of the hotel. It looks as though you can't because the main roads fork. We drove around for a little while looking for a place to park the car temporarily until we realized we could just drop it off out front. The staff was extremely accommodating. We checked out a tad late, left our bags and car, and walked around the city for most of the day. The staff continued to treat us as honored guests long after check-out.

Be sure to use the elevators when toting the luggage to and from the room.

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Goldener Hirsch last week and had a wonderful experience. Everyone at the hotel was very nice and helpful. The hotel is lovely, decorated like an upscale Alpine lodge. Our room was great with a really nice bathroom. The location was fantastic and we were able to walk everywhere in the old and new town. Wish all of our hotels throughout the rest of our trip had been this nice!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2009

My wife and I spent a weekend in Salzburg in February, 2009. I booked the Goldener Hirsch on Starwood's website for €135/night based on a chainwide discount for my company. Great deal and there was no question that it was worth paying a little bit more to stay right in the middle of everything at such a historic hotel. (We also realized that the off-season rates were a great reason to visit Salzburg in February)

Upon check-in we were informed that there was an additional €20 for a second guest. I realize many European hotels charge more for two people, but this seemed like quite a lot (at another Starwood property later on the same trip, the upcharge was €50). Other hotel charges were expensive -- room service breakfast (which we did not take) was €30, and Internet access was €18/day (I've paid more, so maybe not horrible, and at least it was wireless).

OK, so those were the main negatives. The hotel was charming, the staff friendly and helpful, and the room was a big win. We were in room 27, a lofted room with sitting area below. No view, but very quiet. The furnishings were really clever - the minibar was hidden in a period-furniture cabinet, for example. Everything was tasteful and warm. The two downsides in the room - the beds (two singles pushed together, there's no way they could get a queen-sized mattress into these rooms) were hard as a rock (no SPG Heavenly Beds!) and the water closet was definitely a closet (very claustrophobic).

The staff booked a tour and dinner for us and was always helpful. The hotel is at one end of a historic street and across the street from a great restaurant called Carpe Diem (eat in the bar, not upstairs, for great "finger food"). We loved exploring all the nooks and crannies nearby, and having Austrian cakes and hot chocolate every afternoon.

It's mostly been said in the other reviews - very comfortable, great service, decent restaurant (with staff in traditional clothing), perfect location, lots of nice touches (eg chocolates on the pillows each evening), but perhaps a bit pricey. We booked a standard room and were upgraded, which seemed to mean a slightly bigger room but much more furniture jammed in. We stayed in the front of the hotel, which meant you could look up and down the street. The street is traffic-free, apart from a few delivery trucks in the morning, and noise is no issue. It deserves to be highly ranked.

At the heart of old Salzburg this lovely old house is as comfortable a hotel as you could wish for. The decor is traditional Austrian with homely rather than plush furnishings but with everything you need. We had a huge room with comfortable sitting area, modernised excellent bathroom and separate loo. The staff are outstandingly good, providing us with a walking tour leaflet, which more or less covered the Old Town, a list of good restaurants--we tried one and enjoyed it, and booked us into a concert at the end of Mozart week.
The whole place oozes traditional class but don't expect flash. We would definitely go back there again.

  • Liked — Huge comfortable room
  • Disliked — Restaurant food was good but not outstanding for class of hotel

When I first walked in, to be honest I thought, “this is one of the finest hotels in Salzburg?” But, once inside, the charm and quaintness of this place took over and I began to see why it is at the top. I had to take 2 small elevators to get to my room, a charming semi-suite with a separate sitting area and large bathroom. Everything here is top-notch, though that does not mean lavish. The elegance of this hotel is in its cozyness. All of the amenities are there…and then some (I had my slippers set out for me every night) but the décor is not what you might expect in a top hotel. Rich, luxurious fabrics are not found here…rather simple, classic elegance. It’s hard to describe, but once you walk in you will understand. Once I was here a night, I could have easily imagined making this place my home…truly!

  • Liked — Quaintness, cozyness
  • Disliked — Elevators a little scary

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 2 nights at the end of December before moving onto Vienna for New Year.

Arrival
From the Airport we got a number 8 bus to the Hauptbahnhof and then jumped in a taxi to the Hotel. The bus was 1.8 Euros and the taxi was 10 Euros.

Location
The location of the hotel is perfect at the end of the main street, “Getreidegasse” where all the shops, restaurants and cafes are or adjoin to.
It’s within walking distance to everything this side of the River Salzach.

Hotel
The hotel itself is beautiful, really cosy with twisting staircases and tiny coves.
There’s nothing plain or typical about the layout.
There is a room with internet access, aswell as a bar, restaurant and breakfast room.

Room
We were in room 38 which was a nice size with a large comfortable bed, table and chairs, desk and the bathroom had a bath.
Plenty of storage space, well stocked mini bar, television and dressing gowns.
The room did get quite hot during the night so we did have to open the windows.

Food & Drink
We only had breakfast while we were here, once in the breakfast room and once in our room. It’s adequate with a selection of cereals, cheese and ham, egg and bacon, etc.

Staff
The staff are very friendly and helpful, the front desk staff were happy to answer any questions I had about sights, travelling, etc.
The room was cleaned to a high standard.

Miscellaneous
- I recommend a trip up to the Festung HohenSalzburg. The views up there are amazing. You can purchase a ticket for 10 Euros which includes a lift up there.
- I recommend a night out at Augustiner Braustubl. This is brewery run by monks which has food stalls inside.
- If you are moving on to Vienna from Salzburg it’s quite simple by train. A one way ticket from the Hauptbahnhof will cost about 40 Euros each and the journey takes about 3 hours. It’s a pleasant journey with nice views in comfortable transportation.

Overall
Although quite costly I highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying in Salzburg. The location, comfort and staff will not disappoint you.
