“Good Hotel for Great City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2012

This was an outstanding value in one of the world's greatest cities for music lovers. Just minutes away (walking) from the area where much of Sound of Music was filmed and it is close to the Mozart. The hotel was clean, staff was very good and the room we received, a "Jrunior Suite" was very nice. The one draw-back was no breakfast, but many places close by.

I stayed for 2 nights and thought it was a brilliant hotel.
All the staff are very very helpful and accommodating.
Great location, easy to get to and east to get around from.

The room wasn't brilliantly furnished or beautiful but we didn't spend a great deal of time in the room. AMAZING shower. powerful, and loads of water. Everything was clean and well stocked.

I didn't have any problems and would definitely stay again if I went back to Salzburg. Some people said it wasn't cheap but nowhere in Salzburg was cheap when we looked and so I think it was reasonable.

In April 2012, I rented a car in Frankfurt with Sixt (the best deal then) and drove through Germany, Austria, Slovakia (Bratislava only) Slovenia and Croatia for 25 days. I stayed in 20 hotels and spent an average of 72 Can/US dollars per night, which is way cheaper than the prices in Canada and USA. Based on this experience, I will rate those 20 hotels.

SIXTH REVIEW: Austrotel Salzburg

It was a little bit difficult to find the hotel, as it was going through renovations and hidden from the view. The staff was nice (I don't understand why some people are complaining about that), the room just OK, but the location is terrific: very close to Mirabell Palace and Gardens and you can easily walk to the Old Town. No free parking, I really don't remember about free breakfast or internet, I'm sorry for that. A little overpriced.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2012 via mobile

We stayed at this hotel with a group of friends in January. The hotel is in a great location, just over the bridge from the old Town and two minutes from the Mirabel Gardens. The rooms are nice and comfortable, if a bit basic. It is worth paying for the upgrade to get a room at the back of the hotel as the front facing rooms are very noisy. The hotel is on a busy junction and the trams run all night long!! Breakfast is excellent and coffee, tea, juice and water are available free of charge all day in the lobby. Free wifi too. All in all great value.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2012

We had 2 days in Salzburg at the end of a ski tour. The Austrotel was conveniently around the corner from the Mirabell Palace and gardens, and a couple of blocks from the pedestrian bridge to Old Town. Our room was spacious, if overlooking the inner courtyard. The reception desk was helpful and the small lounge offered coffee, tea, water and juices. Free wi-fi in the hotel and a computer in the lobby. If you need a printer (for example, for your boarding passes) you can forward an email to the reception desk and they will print it out. Breakfast was generous.
In March, things shut down on Sundays and I was disappointed to find few restaurants open near the hotel. Be advised!

Room Tip: Avoid the -01 series as it is across the hall from the elevator and very noisy from fellow travelers...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2012

Frequent European travelers will know that "4-star" can mean a lot of things. In the case of Austrotel Salzburg, it means like 2 1/2 stars. First, the good. Location is good, on a relatively quiet street, with a number of stores and restaurants within a couple minutes walk. Parking is just around the block, and is cheap at 13 euros per day (with the hotel discount). The front desk is very friendly and helpful. This hotel is one of the kind where you can leave your key at the desk when you leave, and pick it up from them when you return. I like this arrangement, some people don't. Of course you don't have to leave the key with them if you don't want to. There is free juice, coffee, tea and water in the lobby. You can also walk to the Old Town in about 10 - 15 minutes. And free wifi which is always a big plus in Europe.
So, the bad. The rooms are small and old. Even more so than your typical "4-star" small Euro hotel. The rooms are also kind of ugly. I wouldn't say they're not clean, but they're definitely not spotless. Bathroom is pretty bad. Lousy shower. And the heat is spotty. Beds aren't that great. Some outlets didn't work. Wifi although free was really slow. No soap in the bathroom.
So, the verdict. I don't really have anything against this hotel, but I wouldn't stay there again. For the same money I'm sure you can do better in Salzburg.
