This Augustiner is the real deal, monk brewed beer of the highest order, not the factory made stuff across the mountain in Bayern. This place is a lot of fun, but can't really be considered a restaurant. It sells beer. You take your mug from a rack, cool it down in a fountain and then buy beer which you take back to your table.
Food is sold by outside vendors set up at one end of the building, and varies from stall to stall as to quality taste and price. You have to buy each item from a different seller, so it can be a bit daunting if your German is as bad as mine. Most of the locals who frequent this place actually bring their own food. We saw a beautifully catered 4 course dinner served to a group at the table next to us that had been brought in from a clearly upscale restaurant. This is perfectly acceptable here, and this is the only such establishment that I know of where they don't prohibit food brought in from outside. As I said they are a brewery and they sell beer. Very good beer.
I can recommend this place on the value of their beer alone. Food is objective here as it depends on what you choose from which vendor's stall. An interesting experience. The atmosphere is relaxing, not busy and rushed as in many such establishments. it is huge with ample seating so there is no feeling of being hurried. A nice place to kick back and enjoy a beer while watching the locals.
