I started my New Year off in Salzburg at Haus Steiner. Like so many others before me, I will comment on the effervescent hostess Rosemarie, she is delightful. You can tell she genuinely loves people, and Salzburg. As for the Haus itself, it is lovely, my room was small, especially the bathroom, but for the price it was amazing. The shower was great, and I had a back room with a balcony view of the mountains, which is what sold me on this location in the first place. Breathtaking. Of course, this would be something more thoroughly enjoyed at a time when there were more hours of daylight. The bus service to town is very convenient, and the schedule is easy to figure out, but it does take 20 minutes each way, unless it's late. Also, the house is on a dirt road, just a couple of blocks from the bus stop, but it is pitch black at night, and the day I was leaving to take the bus to the airport, it was raining, and I had to carry my luggage rather that drag it through mud. Breakfast was nice, nothing fancy, but a nice time to chat with Rosemarie. Unfortunately, she was out when I arrived, but a guy named "Bronco"(?) was there to meet me, and was very nice, although his English was limited. We managed in Italian. The only real area with some room for improvement would be the internet connection: I was only able to get online once in the breakfast room for a short time, I could never quite get a signal in my room. Rosemarie checked a couple of times, and said there was no problem that she could find. I had no problem anywhere in Downtown Salzburg, so I know it wasn't my device. Just something to think about if you really need to be connected, I prefer to unplug when I am on a trip, but as a travel agent, I need to be available for my clients even when I travel. In review, Haus Steiner is a pleasant place to stay with jaw dropping views, a lovely hostess, and the price is right. I would not hesitate to recommend it to any budget conscious travelers who don't need to be in the middle of the action.
