“Nice simple apartel just minutes outside the Salzburg zentrum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2011

Ante Portas interiors is Ikea world - if you know Ikea, you'll know how the room and furnishings look like. The room we stayed in had a big double bed, clean, simple, spacious. Bathroom was clean and roomy, had a shower. Kitchenette was just as you enter the door. It had a small refrigerator, a coffee pot (with coffee and sugar available if you wish to have some), a stove and a microwave oven. It's also fully equipped. But you'll need to buy your own paper towels if you're planning to use the kitchenette as you're expected to clean up before you leave.

It's an apartel, so no daily cleaning or change of towels. It didn't really matter to us, since we just stayed for 2 nights.

Good selection of TV channels, but we didn't really have time to watch TV. Salzburg (zentrum and nearby St. Gilgen, Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, etc) is just too nice to be spending time in the room.

Location is great. It's about 10 minutes outside the zentrum but it's great if you have a car. They have onsite parking. Bus #4 to the city center is just 1 minute walk away and frequency every 10 minutes and you don't need to transfer. So it's really very convenient. There is a nearby grocery and cafe/bakery which closes at 7pm. There is also a deli but I'm not sure of opening hours since it was closed when we passed it at around 6pm. There are also some restaurants nearby.

Reception was friendly. We met both the proprietress (I'm assuming she is or if she's not, then she must be the manager) and her colleague. Instructions left for us for check-in were very clear and accurate. Office hours are just from 8:30am to 1pm apparently.

They offer arrangement of tours. We got the Original Sound of Music Tour (includes South of Music sites as well as overview of the city) through them. They can also get you a Salzburg card or similar. You don't need to go to the city to get them.

Free parking in their private lot is possible but in reality, you can only park around 5-6 cars. We had to double park. One negative is that they need to create a better process esp if cars are double parked. We were asked by the front desk to park in one of the spots that later ended up inconveniencing another guest since they assumed he wasn't going to use his car during the day, and we were out the entire day. They encourage guests to leave their cars and take the bus to the center because it is difficult to park in the zentrum and also require you to obtain a pass. So it is extremely important that they create a process for guests who have confirmed to leave their cars and for guests who may decide to take their car out for a drive while staying there. If the guy turned out to the checking out, then it would have been a disaster. And they didn't even know who the owner of the car is as we don't register our plates.

Room Tip: If you're particular about noise, then ask for a room at the back. If you hate stairs or have a...

We stayed in Ante Portas for three nights in August. It has got stylish decoration. The windows are dressed up with beautiful real flowers. We need to slightly open the window because there is no air-conditioner in the room. Yet as our room is near the main road, we could hear vehicles passing by in the day time as well as at night from time to time. Grateful it didn't affect me too much as I could asleep easily after my full day's travelling.

It is about 15 minutes away from central train station by bus. Moreover, it only takes 5 minutes' walk to the supermarket. Since it is located in the residential area, it is pretty quiet at night. We enjoyed strolling around the nearby streets after dinner. There are a couple of restaurants / bars within 10 minutes' walk.

Be prepared to carry your luggage up to at least one flight of steps as there is no elevator in the apartment. The front desk opens from 8:30am till 1:00pm. We were glad that it was still open when we reached there at late afternoon. We met two front desk staff. Both are friendly and can speak very good English.

Ante Portas did go a long way in making our Salzburg sojourn a very pleasant one. We spent a very satisfactory 2 nights here. Located away from central Salzburg (about 10 min by bus), which actually wasn't such a problem as the city is well-networked with its bus service, even at odd hours. The proprietress (i suppose) was very helpful and educated us with the city attractions, passes (which seem very reasonable) and other info. We weren't aware that the Ante Portas is actually 'specialty lodging' - the apartment is ours to maintain for the entire stay. Equipped with a kitchenette and a neighborhood supermarket for supplies, we did have a surprisingly great time throughout. And in toto, therefore, great value for money.
Of course, not having room service and housekeeping might turn out to be an issue for a longer stay.

Recently spent 9 nights at the Ante Portas for business/pleasure during the Festival period. I knew that the location was not completely central, but from reviews I had read it seemed to be very good value, well appointed, and not too far from the city centre.

Well, the reality certainly met my expectations. The hotel was 35-40 minutes walk from Salzburg city centre (also reachable by a frequent public bus service). The room (14, on the ground floor) was not huge, but not tiny either, with an adequately-equipped kitchenette and good sized bathroom with good shower. Bed (2 single bed mattresses joined together) was comfortable. WIFI was available free (as it should be in all such establishments!) and the staff were friendly and helpful. Cheap supermarket, cafe, bank nearby.

The only down side was the fact that the hotel was located on quite a noisy road. I had to sleep with the window open as the room would have been too hot otherwise, which of course made the traffic noise worse. Not an insurmountable problem, as I sleep with earplugs. I would suggest you request a room at the rear of the building to help with this. That said, perhaps this wouldn't be such a problem in the winter.

I would certainly recommend this establishment, and would certainly stay there again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the building.

Although not in the centre of Salzburg, this family run hotel is in an excellent position and only a 20-25 minutes walk from the city centre, regular bus service, and the staff all speak English, and are very friendly. They helped us orginise our daytrips and we bought our Salzburg passes from the reception. This hotel is room only so we had self catering facilities in the room and all the furnishings is done by Ikea! Spotlessly clean, I cannot say anything negative about the Hotel!
Fresh towels everyday, and satalite TV in all the rooms. I will be booking the Ante Postas again when I go back to Salzburg.

I spent 5 nights at Ante Portas and would highly recommend it. It's location is about 5-10 mins from the centre of Salzburg by bus. This wasn't a problem as buses were frequent even at night.

Apartment was well heated with floor heating in the bathroom. Rooms are small so really for sleeping only, but there is so much to see in Salzburg that this didn't matter.

Staff were wonderfully welcoming and very helpful with recommendations for things to do and also assisting with a lost luggage issue.

Very comfortable and enjoyable for a bargain price.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2010

We spent 5 nights and chose this apartment based on trip advisor recommendations. For a no frills option Ante Portas represents good value. However, small things like a kettle, toaster and a change of towels would have made a difference. The mattress and pillows needed replacing. Apartment needed some attention too - some fixtures and fittings needing repair. Apartment was generally clean. Front of house staff were friendly and helpful and were able to book sightseeing tours and events on our behalf. Not well located for daily necessities although there was a small mini-market nearby but it was minimally stocked and the quality was average. Ante Portas is on a bus route though which provided good access to the city centre and other areas.
