“4 Star ????”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2012

Following a recent stay I was disappointed on the size of our room which included a single pull out bed for my 15 year old daughter which was placed with one half wedged up to the drafty balcony window and the top half against the radiator. We actually moved to the end of our bed.
When we asked the receptionist if they had another room we were told that our room was a standard room which is always reserved by Crystal and that they were fully booked. Unfortunately we then discovered that their was no hot water for a shower, only luke warm. During our weeks stay we only managed 2 hot showers which were taken late afternoon which suggests that the hot water system cannot cope when fully booked. We spent most evenings after dinner in our "small room" as the small lounge area was directly opposite the main entrance and was extremly chilly. The small bar area which was opposite the lounge area was again not very appealing which meant there were not other areas in which to spend time relaxing.
Access to the free Wi-fi proved difficult and we were unable to connect for the majority of the time.
As for the spa area we disappointed to find that the "Jacuzzi" as stated in the brochure is just a single bath with jets and which required a token to be purchased from reception. We also had to pay 5 Euros for gowns which was not stated in Crystals brochure description.
The restaurant in our opinion was the hotels saving grace with the staff extremly attentive and friendly. The breakfast menu offered everything from cereals, fruit, fresh bread rolls to boiled and fried eggs along with omelette made to order. Between 4 - 5 pm there were teas and coffees along with cakes and often a savoury dish.
The evening meals were sufficient although our 15 year old struggled with many of the meals and would have preferred it if there had been a childrens menu on the evenings when she disliked what was on offer.
As for the ski resort itself we were disappointed in the lack of piste grooming which resulted in poor conditions on the majority of pistes. Even first thing in the morning the pistes appeared to be in the sort of condition you'd expect at the end of the day and not first thing. We also found the runs to be extremely short.
We have been skiing for the past 11 years and this is the first time we have been disappointed with a ski resort.

Room Tip: If travelling with children i would recommend inquiring into whether they have triple rooms rather t...

We have just returned from a week at this hotel skiing with Crystal holidays, the hotel was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms are clean comfortable and reasonably spacious.
The food in the hotel was excellent and the kitchen staff were always willing to be flexible in order to accomodate my wifes aversion to meat and my daughters pickiness. The reception staff were very helpful and even though we arrived early, our room was quickly prepared.
Free afternoon tea on return from the slopes which I must say were fantastic was very welcoming. If there was a downside it was the cost of drinks in the dining room but they have to survive on their takings in the summer when the resort is closed.

We were in Obertauern for Skiing and stayed in the Latschenhof for this week.

The service was excellent most of the time (including the hotel getting ski passes, and to the most kind very friendly staff at the reception and in the restaurant).
There is some room for improvement with regards to some of the services, in other words it would have been helpful for the hotel and for us if we would have been informed at check in time that the hotel offers getting the ski passes this would have spared us some waiting time the next morning and the hotel the need to rush someone to buy the passes (which they were willing to do without complaining nevertheless), but these were IMHO minor aspects.
The food was as well very good most of the time (with 1 out of 7 exceptions at dinner). Breakfast was very good but dependent on the staff being on duty the "egg service" (the hotel offers making omelettes, eyes sunny side up etc. on individual demand) there were sometimes long waiting times until someone was supporting in this area.

It was generally quite cold in Obertauern at the time of our stay so it was very convenient that the hotel let its heating run at a setting that allowed the rooms to become convenient (we have seen different settings in the past :-) ). The only disadvantage observed in the shower was that the overall warm water capacity was limited to some extent so in some cases the water became hotter or colder most probably when someone else started or stopped showering (nevertheless manageable).

The hotel offers free WiFi (which I perceive as very helpful :-) ); unfortunately the log in into the hotels system did not work a significant portion of the time.

Generally we had a very positive impression about the hotel with few aspects that have room for improvement (without being bad as they are).

Contrary to previous reports ,we found the food to be excellent and the staff very friendly without exception. On arrival our room was ready well before the normal check-in time.Room was comfortable and warm even when we turned off the main radiator. The mattress may be a little too firm for some but fine for us.There was a good supply of hot water whenever
we needed it.As stated before, smoking in the lobby and downstairs bar is now only allowed after 10PM.
At breakfast you could request fried eggs, omelettes and bacon in addition to the wide range of buffet food which included fruit, pastries and lovely bread.Afternoon tea usually comprised two different cakes and sometimes soup which was very welcome after skiing with windchill of about -26C some days . The evening meals were generally very well presented and the wine by the carafe was good value .Our waiter Tomas was efficient and cheerful, remembered our usual requests and kept us amused by trying to get us to order in German.
Location was pretty good,50m on the access road down to a footbridge across the main road to reach the nearest piste. On return the hotel is accessible from the Kirchbuhel T bar as well as the higher circuit lifts . We were very pleased with the Skiworld rental shop at the Marietta hotel virtually next door to the Latschenhof. It was about a 10min walk to get to the delightful Latschenalm when we decided to indulge in a Jagertee one day when skiing was cut short by "too much snow".The route takes you past a tearoom which has exquisite Sachertorte and then past the tourist information centre which has a fascinating display of old photos showing the development of Obertauern as a ski resort.

We arrived at the Hotel Latschenhof at 11.00am and were told our rooms would not be available until 2.00pm.We went for lunch got our ski passes/skis and returned to the Hotel. We skied that afternoon and returned to the Hotel early to shower and prepare for the gala dinner being as it was New Years Eve.NO HOT WATER.After travelling and skiing we were all looking forward to a nice shower. We told a member of staff who told us if we waited a couple of hours the water would have time to heat up again.( not really good enough!).Food in the evening was good most of the time couple of exceptions, breakfast was ok but you had to either cook boiled eggs for yourself or wait for someone to arrive and cook bacon etc.Not what we would call 4* .Rooms were very basic but they were clean.Smoking was only allowed in the bar after 10.00pm.We found two of the staff to be friendly and helpful and found the others couldn't be bothered.

We have stayed in this hotel 5 times in thee years and we rated the food and service as excelant. we have just returned and the staff have changed in the resteraunt. The menu is of a lesser standard. The service is poor . Breakfast .The cooked eliments are not regularly topped up . Infact I was told by the chef I would have to wait 5 mins for a fryed egg . The bacon is only cooked in small quantities and you must wait . When we arrived last saturday there was no assam tea so we had to settle for dargelling. We worked our way through this supply and when it was gone we have been with out breakfast tea for 2 days. No one could be bothered to get some from another hotel in the group or even go to the local supermarket. To sum up there is poor organisation and one feels there has been a cost cutting exercise .Unless staff are found that were as good as the last 4 years I feel that restraunt is dragging the hotel down

The position of the hotel is great - right by ski bridge 5 with a handy umbrella bar just as you have to kick your ski's off!! The best bit about the hotel was the food - it might be a skiing holiday but I managed to put on 5 pounds!!! Six courses every night ( veg. option as well) Good ski and boot room - heated racks but don't leave it too late as they can go quickly - didn't try the sauna. Tea and cakes at 4pm everyday - you can always ask for more tea/coffee but they don't volunteer this. The reason I would give the hotel it's 4 star rating is the food alone - not too much on the way of other facilities and the bar is small and smokey( come on Austria - get in line with the rest of us and ban smoking indoors!)
- sit in the reception area near the bar and isn't so smokey. The tv's didn't have any English channels at all - not that it bothered us - and rooms were typically Austrian - free toiletries and slippers!!
Our main concern about the resort is about the lack of piste bashing - ok - we had a lot of snow the week we were there but we have been to Finland and Norway the last 3 years and they get snow!!! Very few runs seem to be prepared - the blue run from the gondola was a nightmare - like a mogul run and we even did it first thing in the morning in the hope that it had been prepared but no!! It culd have been alot less tiring week and far more enjoyable if the piste bashers had been out. We also had two days of partial lift closures due to high winds but hey - thats the weather for you!!
