In view of the favorable reviews of “Gasthaus zum Heiligen Josef” we were deceived when we entered this restaurant. The rustic furniture and decoration of the non-smokers' area are inharmonious and rather unappealing. Evidently the bare wooden tables without table-cloths shall create the atmosphere of an Austrian or Bavarian pub. This would be alright if the chairs were not extremely uncomfortable. Furthermore, the restaurant was noisy and we found the waves of kitchen smell sweeping through the dining area from time to time as well as the frequent ring tone originating from the kitchen quite disturbing.
The restaurant was full when we arrived there on a Saturday for a late lunch. After having been allocated a table it took painstakingly long for the waiter to bring us the menus and to ask us what we would like to drink. While service was thus far from speedy, the waiter did his job with very personal note and in a particularly friendly manner.
The permanent menu, though not brilliantly styled, convinced by its content. It was comprehensive and comprised several creatively devised dishes as well as the ribs for which this restaurant is renowned. The focus of the dishes of the day was on asparagus dishes. About a quarter of an hour after we had ordered the main courses the waiter asked us for our understanding that due to the heavy workload of the kitchen we would have to be prepared to wait for quite a while. Indeed, only after an extended waiting period our dishes were served.
It turned out that it had been worth waiting. Both main courses we had were delicious. The meat was tender and the asparagus neither stringy or too hard nor mushy. Although our portions were large, “Gasthaus zum Heiligen Josef” is certainty more expensive than similar restaurants located a little farther away from the city center. While this restaurant excels as far as the food is concerned, everything else leaves room for improvement.
