We stayed at this hotel after reading its review in Rick Steves "2007 Germany and Austria" guidebook. The mostly rug-free pine floor accommodations make for a noisy stay. Most rooms are quite small. The bathrooms (we looked at several rooms when I rejected the next-to-the-stairs selection they had set us in)...anyway, the bathrooms receive little to no ventilation and the odor of mildew is almost stifling. My husband made peace with the bathroom mildew, what bothered him was the difficulty finding someone to check in with (go up to the second floor, enter the the restaurant, and walk over to the bar. The bar serves as a part-time welcome desk). The breakfast was completely forgettable...which suprised us both given the fact that the restaurant is well reviewed.
We selected this hotel hoping to receive hiking advice from proprietor, mountaineer Herr Zauner. The only time we saw Herr Zauner was during his puppet like stomping through the room at dinner...he didn't pause to inquire as how to guest were faring. (Side note, my husband's dinner was amazing...my Zauner soup, well, an experience..we were charged 3 Euros for two very small extra pieces of bread--which should have come free w/the very, very spicy soup!).
Hallstadt is beautiful, but warrants a drive through, not an over-night stay. I doubt the rooms elsewhere would have been much better. The town is very small, and the local alpine hiking is expensive to get to...We ended up being very grateful that the Hotel Zauner staff let us leave early w/o penalty.
We wouldn't stay at this hotel again, but we have no plans to return to Hallstadt either. The Hotel is WAY overpriced @ ~102 Euros...but tolerable if you're desperate.
