Interesting is the best way to describe this visit. Firstly and most importantly.... if I returned to Hallstatt, I would stay here. It seemed to be one of better hotels in town.

A word of warning for anyone travelling in the Winter months. Whilst you may dodge the crowds, it also means there are relative few businesses open.

We ate at Gasthof Zauner for the entire three nights we were there. I think that there was one other option, but it didn't really appeal. Whilst the food was good, tasty and reasonably priced, I don't know anyone that would choose to eat at the same restaraunt three times in a row.

Back to the accomodation. We stayed on the third floor (no lift and with large suitcases, I certainly got a work out), in a corner balcony room which had relatively nice views over the town square, mountains in the background and small gaps to view the lake. The room was comfortable for European standards, clean, but somewhat dated (relected in the relatively cheap price).

I think we were the only people in the hotel on the first night. Breakfast was adequate without being special, and the staff were relatively helpful. In particular the young man that runs the restaraunt.

So all in all a good stay. We'd stay at this hotel again, but definately would save our visit for the middle of summer to enjoy some variety. It is also worth mentioning that all of the tourist attractions in the area do not operate until May.

We spent one night in Hallstatt in the middle of a two week vacation and wish we had spent more. Gasthof Zauner was a perfect spot to enjoy this picturesque town. The hotel is small but clean and neat and cozy as can be. You can tell this is a family run business and everyone takes pride in making your stay a comfortable one.

Our room was not large but comfortable, with one of the best beds I slept in during our trip. An extra pillow would have been great, but that's a pretty minor gripe. The room was done in knotty pine furnishings, which was perfect for the location. We had a lovely view of the lake and mountains over the very few rooftops between the hotel and the lake. The bathroom was definitely miniscule, but was perfectly sufficient.

We did enjoy dinner at the hotel and had a wonderful, relaxing meal. The fish was just fabulous and as fresh as could be!

This is definitely a homey, comfortable place to stay in a lovely little down. If you are looking for four star accomodations, this is probably not the place for you. However, if you are looking for a comfortable, family run establishment with tons of charms, then Gasthof Zauner will definitely add to your stay in a absolutely stunning location.

I am very happy to find this hotel for my travel to Hallstatt. Yes, this is an incredible place where we should at least visit once in our life.

Hotel room is very clean, neat and right in the center. Less than 2 minutes walk from the "habour" where you get off of the boat. If i have an opportunity go visit again, i will definitely visit and stay here. I already recommended to my colleagues and friends this hotel to stay and this historical and beautiful town. People are so friendly there, even passengers on the train. Thank you all!

My husband and I stayed at the Gasthof Zauner in June this year. We travelled to Hallstatt by train from Salzburg, taking 2 and a half hours (very scenic). We stayed for six nights (perhaps a little too long) with the intention of spending most of our time hiking in the area.

Our room had a lake view and was generally ok but the bathroom was very dated and looked as if it would benefit from a good clean, especially the shower. We have stayed at other excellent hotels in Austria and were a little disappointed as they were far better value for money. Despite this, we had a very pleasant stay at the hotel, the food was excellent and the service could not be faulted. The lady who served us at breakfast was especially charming and helpful.

Hallstatt itself is a wonderful place to visit, we very much enjoyed our stay despite the weather being a bit mixed (it can look quite gloomy when raining as the mountains tend to almost completely surround you). We went for some fantastic walks (the Echern valley walk is beautiful and very easy to do). It is also worth getting the bus to Obertraun and taking the cable car up the Krippenstein to the "five fingers" viewpoint from which there are spectacular views of the lake.

Hallstatt is a great place to visit for its stunning setting, variety of walks and its historical interest. We found the food delicious and reasonably priced,though somewhat limited. The Gruner Baum and Braugastof restaurants have good food and great lake views. Nightlife is non existent, so dont go to Hallstatt if you are expecting a large choice of restaurants or bars!
