We visited Halstatt in September 2004 and had a wonderful time at this small hotel. It used to be the town brewery (since 1504) and oozes antique charm and history--a wonderful wooden spiral staircase, creaky floors, arched doorways, antiques, etc. The rooms are clean but small (although the room with the four-poster bed is larger, it does not have a front balcony) and are decorated in traditional Austrian style. The bathrooms are tiny (our two rooms had showers only), but the lake-views are magical, especially in the early morning and early evening. We were surprised to find so many Japanese and American tourists in this little town (out of nine tables at the ivy-clad Gasthof Zauner Seewirt restaurant on the main square, which had great food and service, we counted only two Austrian/German couples), which was a little disappointing for us; we like to find places that have more locals than tourists (try the restaurant up the hill too, Gasthof Zur Muehle--great pizza!). The hotel has a beautiful breakfast room with a bountiful buffet--fresh bread from the bakery next door, fresh orange juice, meats, cheese, yogurt, etc. I would advise an earlier than later approach though, as everything just sits out. The breakfast room has a huge tile stove, lots of antiques, huge wooden beams, old pictures and pewter. The family dog might make himself comfortable at your feet under the table, and will wait patiently for a treat! The owners, Frau and Herr Lobisser, were very friendly, and moved us to a balcony room on our second night (the maid had actually moved all of our things for us before we got to our room). All in all, a great experience.
