“Do Donau lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

A good place for lunch sitting beside the Donau (Danube) River watch the barges make their slow way up the river. But, plan on it being a very leisurely lunch. At least two hours.

The food is very good, service is courteous and efficient, the price is more than you'll pay in most other restaurants, but you won't get the Donau ambience in others.

If you're going to Düernstein make this restaurant your choice.

“Fabulous Danube”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2013 via mobile

The food was very good but had to take second place to the wonderful views of the Danube from our table on the terrace. The golden warmth of the sun setting on the vinyards while we sampled an exceptional Pinot Noir from the neighboring Langenloiser region was something we will always remember.
Service was pleasant and professional even though we did not stay at the hotel. Also worth mentioning is that while food was on the expensive side the wine selection was varied and with reasonable markups.

“Great food and environment”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

The restaurant has seating both in its internal formal area and on its terrasse overlooking the Danube. It is genuine fine dining with a wide selection of starters, main courses and desserts as well as an excellent wine list understandably favouring locally grown wines which are very well made. Our meals variously included steak, fish, goulash and appropriate desserts none of which disappointed. The environment is reason enough to try it, let alone the excellent food and service.

“Wonderful view”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013 via mobile

We had planned a Lunch in the Landhaus Bacher, which unfortunately was closed on Tuesday. We decided to stop at the Schloss Dürnstein. The castle is overlooking the Wachau valley and the Danube, the view is absolutely stunning. We entered the castle and the owner (father) was sitting at the reception, barely looking up und not greeting. We decided still to try despite the strange way an owner would welcome its guests in the castle and we were not disappointed. Service was great, professional and friendly and we loved the food. We started with a home made beef brood with semolina dumplings, stripes of pancake and liver dumpling, all delicous. The Wiener Schnitzel were flat and crispy and the dessert, Abricot Dumpling, a reason to come back and all at a very reasonable price. Worth visiting

“Unpleasant experience with waitstaff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

We had a very unpleasant and unfortunate experience yesterday evening at about 530pm with this restaurant, in particular, with one of the male waitstaff - unfortunate, because we had looked forward to dining at Schloss Durnstein, which appeared to have a tantalizing dinner menu, as well as a terrace overlooking an amazing landscape.

We were stopping over in Durnstein on a Viking river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, and after a pleasant walk through the charming town, and an amazing climb and view from atop the Burgruine Durnstein, we were looking for a nice place for dinner.

We wandered down the stairs to the restaurant and were immediately taken by the views from the terrace. In addition, we were also very excited with the dinner menu. While we stood waiting, the waiter continued to clear tables, appearing to be totally oblivious to the several people, including us, waiting to be attended to.

When he eventually attended to us in an arrogant manner, we made a booking for later in the evening at 8pm, intending to return after freshening up. When we requested a table on the edge of the terrace, he responded by saying that it was fully booked, at the same time indicating that we could have a table on the other terrace. This was despite the reservation book being right in front of us appearing to only have 4-5 bookings written on it. When we pointed this fact out, he then said that it was not up to him, and that the Maitre'd would make the decisions on table seating when he arrived.
We again asked if we could make a request, to which he again responded that it was up to the Maitre'd.

I was very taken aback by his inconsistency with regard to being fully booked, then saying that we could have tables on the other terrace, then saying that the seating arrangements were actually up to the Maitre'd. I promptly cancelled my reservation on the spot.

I do wonder whether he was just arrogant, or possibly racist (I am of Asian descent) or whether this restaurant just does not live up to the luxurious Relais and Chateaux hotel chain reputation.

There was, however, a female waitperson present who was quite pleasant and helpful, but appeared to be junior to the rude male waitperson.

Very unexpected, coming from a Relais and Chateaux hotel.
