Owner description: Castle Kuernriger (Schloß Kürnriger) is the main attraction of Durnstein (Dürnstein). It is the ruins of the castle in which Richard Leoncoeur, King of England was held prisoner for a year while returning from a Crusade. The ransom was used by the Duke of Babenberg to build the city walls of Vienna. This is a popular historical attraction especially for British people.

“Steep Climb, but the Views are worth it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

We stopped in Durnstein on a river cruise and while many of the cruisers were walking the tourist shops, three of us climbed to the top of the ruins. It's a fun, steep climb, with nice views of the Danube Valley all the way up. But, persevere--the views from the top are simply incredible. Evidently, Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned there during the Crusades and the ruins are fun to walk around.
There is NO shortcut to get to the top, so you have to be reasonably fit to make this climb. The steps are irregular, so be careful on the way up and down. I think you should allow at least 30 minutes for the climb to the top and nearly the same on the way down.

“The view is spectacular! Crusade history and ruins are a bonus.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We hiked up to Schloß Kürnriger and had our eyes knocked out by the view. It's gorgeous and well worth the vista,, but the ruins themselves are not maintained so they are what's left after 1000 years. The history behind the capture of Richard the Lion Hearted is well documented on placards as you climb the path, and they make for an excuse to stop and rest while you read the info provided. There is no entry fee. We spent under an hour hiking, reading the placards and picture taking. If you are in Durnstein and in reasonably good health, it is well worth the effort.

“Trace the steps to where Richard the Lionhearted was held prisoner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 24, 2013

Came upon the Castle as part of a wine tour in Wachau Valley. Castle is about 1000 yrs old. Fairly easy climb up to the ruins. You'll be on steps and some rock-steps and this will take you about 20 mins to reach from the village. But, at the top, you are not only in the Castle, but you'll get awesome views of the Wachau Valley and the Danube River. Well worth the effort.

“LOVED THIS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2013

I had passed this way many years ago and have always wanted to hike up to the ruined Kuenringer Castle. We finally did it - LOVED IT. The trail is just off a side road in town -- we took the old steep trail through the woods. Yes, it's a bit of a climb, but the views on top are amazing. The ruins are fascinating because Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned here 800 years ago. You can climb about the ruins, which are somewhat extensive. Plan on about 1 1/2 hours to do the whole thing, including time to climb around on top and enjoy the scenery.
I don't think there's a website on this - but you can't miss it as you drive by. It's sitting high atop the hillside overlooking the Donau River Valley. No charge. No wheelchair access. No facilities or food. This is just a good hike!
