“very diisappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2008

The bedrooms were good, although the lift only went to half landings.
The lobby was comfortable but the food let them down! One evening we were served garlic soup (tasted like soggy garlic bread), Spam with some potatoes and a bit of salad and coffee swiss roll.

Unfortunatly there was a theft from a room overnight - several people said they disturbed two men

.... but considering the decoration, he almost could have done so..... Obviously there were more competitive hotels at his time.

This former Mercure hotel belongs now to a small Austrian group and the problem of the property is that it is neither old (dating form 1960) nor modern.

Since competition is tough in musical city Baden they have to rely on bus groups, whcih means a very busy breakfast table even for private single guests. (Actually I also did not like how the staff treated their Chinese bus guests at breakfast time ....)

Positive aspects: The central location at the Casiino and Kurpark, where Johann Strauss has conducted his Waltzes and Monzarts, Beethoven's and his music is still played (free of charge) each summer afternoon (Kurkonzet).. The view to this Park and the surrounding woods and montains, the wellness zone and the large rooms.

Reception was friendly even during a 11 pm checkin and I got a parking lot within 3 minutes.

Was lucky to negotiate an excellent value rate.

I was in Baden for a business trip, and had a quite bad experience.

The hotel has a very good location, close to the city centre and close to the casino. The hotel was clean and the bed was OK, but that is about it. The rest of the experience was quite bad.

I do not know the last time this hotel was renovated (in the 60's?) but it was probably a decent hotel back then. Now it is not. The standard of the rooms, corridors, elevators, etc, is low. The breakfast buffet was terrible (terrible food -- good service though). The milk was not fresh, the juices were undrinkable, bread was bad...

Nowadays, you expect to be able to get Internet access in your rooms, but not at this hotel. You had to go down to the lobby access the wifi. When I asked why they say on their web site that the rooms have wifi, they answered "next week it will work"... Oh well.

One evening I wanted to iron a shirt, but they did not have an iron in the whole hotel!!! First, they did not even understand what I was asking about.

I had booked a four nights stay but had to check out one night early but they still charged me the full price of the fourth night.

The hotel is well located close to the city centre.

The entire interior decoration of the hotel is very old-fashioned (early 60s) and functional. Rooms were quite large and everything was clean.

When I stayed there for business purpose I had the advantage of a corporate rate and therefore the cost-performance ratio was alright. However, I would never spend the rack rate to stay there. If you do not mind the interior you can stay there. If you are looking for a place with ambience, stay away.

Staff was helpful and friendly.

The hotel offers authentic 1960ies chic, with a wonderful view of the central park and the historic casino - if you can get a room with a balcony on the park-side (which is what you should ask for). The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. The indoor pool was well kept (and completely empty - I was the only one using it). The sauna - steam bath area is comparatively small, considering the size of the property, the steam bath was actually too hot; with three people besides me, the area seemed already full. No towels provided in sauna area, bathrobes only for hire, which is mean considering the supposed quality of the hotel and the room price.
Good location (if not cheap). The lobby bar closes at 11pm, whic is rather early, but it is not very well stocked anyway.
The main problem was the breakfast: Served until 10 (only until ten - a day after Christmas!), it was virtually eaten up by 9.30, the window tables were already reserved for the following day. The hot food was semi-cold and congealed, no rolls to speak of, fruit-salad was reduced to an ungainly sight. There was lots of staff aroun,d but nobody was inclined to improve the breakfast situation. This part of our stay was definitely not up to standard.
