“Great value for money at Hotel Solana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2008

I read the mixed reviews on the site and went to the Solana with some worries but wanted to report back what I saw and felt.

Smoking - the whole of Andorra still smokes in public places, if you don't like it don't go to Andorra but don't expect any hotel or bar to be different.

Food - Plenty of it and good quality served by freindly people. The 8am breakfast is a bit late and could do with some porridge as an option. The 8pm dinner will be a bit late for people with kids but for adults it fits well with some Apres Ski drinks normally accompanied by some free nachos or toasties.

Rooms - Variable standards but the reps do seem to try and get you the better ones, they are all warm, clean and have good supplies of hot water. Some are noisier than others but the main noise will come from other guests letting children run wild.

Staff - Freindly and helpful, booking taxis for trips and giving advice.

Facilities - The small pool, sauna and steam room are a little dated but fine and help end the day nicely. Never went in the disco. The bar is good, has a wood fire and comfy chairs, free board and card games, pool table and some video games. Large TV if that's your thing showing some english programmes.

Location - 100m downhill from the gondola. Ski Bus stop opposite. Small supermarket next door. Nice position catches plenty of sunlight with decent views, not too noisy at night and has a good selection of bars and restaurants within 200m.

Overall - we had a great week in Andorra that was good value for money and a great alternative xmas. Talking to others in the resort of Arinsal the Solana overall scores pretty well and I hope more of you give it a chance! To those of you that let your children go berserk on holiday, have a little more consideration for the rest of us please (Note - this isn't an Andorra only problem)

We arrived in Arinsal on a September Sunday without booking and were offered a nice room for 80 Euros. Everything was very clean and there was a fine view of the Pic de Coma Pedrosa from the small balcony.

The pool and sauna were a great addition, as after coming down from the Pic de Coma Pedrosa we were a bit tired (it's not a short walk ;-)) and really needed some relax.

The folks at the reception were kind and helpful. I don't know if this was because we weren't in ski season so there was really not much people and life was more relaxing for the staff as well.

We didn't eat at the hotel, but we had breakfast and ti was fine; there was plenty to eat at the buffet, we even "stole" some things to eat while climbing the Coma Pedrosa. ;-)

We came to Arinsal on a Neilson ski package and picked this hotel due to its location and price. We had some slight reservations prior to arriving, due to some rather negative reviews on Tripadvisor and Yahoo, but I must say that our stay turned out to be comfortable and relaxed. Firstly, the room is not first class, but it was clean and comfortable. Surprisingly, the bed was firm and comfortable. You need this to recover after a long-day skiing. House-keeping did a great job tidying up, while we were up on the slopes, so it was nice to return to a clean and tidy room. Our room was on the 3rd floor, with a balcony facing the main road and had no problems with noise (except for a few people taking apres-ski into the early hours of the morning). Staff were friendly, helpful and spoke English. If I had one complaint, it would be the dinner service, which was from 8pm to 10pm - not great for families with kids. Dinner was buffet style, and had a large variety of food choices. To us, the food was perfectly acceptable - the meat choices were quite good and one night, the fish was well cooked. Salad could be better though. No coffee or tea is available during dinner time, which I would have preferred to have. Because dinner was late, there would be a large queue formed prior to 8pm, so get there 10-15 mins early to avoid the queue. I must say that as the week wore on, less and less people showed up for dinner as they decided to dine out. There is convenience store next door which is good for snacks, water and alcohol. The walk to the gondola station is about 300m from the hotel, which can be a challenge walking uphill in ski boots, so if you are skiing, I would recommend that you rent a locker at the ski station for your boots and skis, and wear your normal shoes to move around. Get yourself a Vallnord discount card and save 10% off the ski locker rental (Euro 8.50 per day). Overall, a recommended budget hotel to stay in for skiing, but if you are after luxury, go for another more expensive hotel.

We stayed at this hotel for a week at the start of February. The location is good on the main street not far from the gondola. Our room was very small and dated however it was clean and linen was changed daily. Bathroom really needed refurbishing.

The restaurant is overcrowded with far too many tables in and an interesting 70’s décor. Breakfast was a continental buffet and had a good selection and bread was very fresh. Dinner wasn’t served till 8pm and judging by the queue every night, everyone else thought that was a bit late too. There was a good selection but due to the buffet not having any heat lamps, went cold very quickly.

The pool was quite small but it was really nice to have the option of a swim and a sauna after a hard day on the slopes.

This is a budget hotel and definitely looks it. Lots of areas really need some maintenance but it is kept clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. If you looking for a luxury holiday don’t stay here – if all you want is somewhere clean to get some sleep while you get plenty of skiing in, this is your place.

Just got back from a week at the solana. Had read mixed reviews and neednt have worried. Ok so the food isnt gourmet but then as a family of vegetarians its not easy anywhere but what food there is, is more than adequate and if you inform reception every morning then the kitchen will make you the most enormous serving of veggie fare that is pretty good.
Our room ws in the old part and was a little dated but the beds were comfy and it had plenty of hot water though be aware that the heating and hot water goes off during the middle of the day so expect a cool shower if getting back from slopes very early.. I would recommend another apres-ski drink before heading back to shower.
The pool is small, its great for kids but not much good for swimming. The sauna is fab and the steam room is fine if you can stay in it long enough to adjust to the odd smell.
The reception staff were extremely helpful and friendly, even after we had lost our key card for the 4th time in the week.
The hotel is situated a shortish walk uphill to the gondala which most small children will find hard going but again thats cause we wore our ski boots as I couldnt carry them aswell as my skis.
Ski lockers are provided at the top of the gondola, if hiring gear then utilise your reps cage.. its cheaper.
Overall, its a great no frills place, does the job and is more than adequate and very reasonably priced.. Inghams is best ski operator at the moment with very competitive online prices. Great resort, friendly good for all levels of skier but dont go expecting luxury cos you will then be disappointed. Worst thing about holiday.. the long transfer.. 4hours.. take travel sick pills and plastic bags!!!!

  • Liked — kids could play and make noise without anyone getting upset
  • Disliked — bathroom had no window!!

We had a superior room and it was adequate. Two single beds in the mezzanine area (up a small stairs) and 2 single in the main area. Our son (16) and daughter (12) stayed in the mezzanine as we had stayed here 2 years ago and I would scrape my head on the ceiling as it was too low for adults. The walls and ceilings had a rough stipple and was possible to skin your head or knuckles.

The room was cleaned every day and new towels were provided. TV in both areas with 2 English channels, (cnn and eurosport). I watched a ruby match on one of the French channels which was grand.

Storage in the rooms was non existent but did not bother us. The heating in the rooms and hotel was great. Walk around in a t-shirt. One evening there was no hot water for showers but the receptionist explained that the boiler was broken and would ring the room when fixed, which she did.

The pool was small and cold initially. The sauna was ok if a little small. The steam room had a bad smell. The door catches to both are to be aware of. No changing facility.

Coming from Ireland and avid non smokers, we did notice the smell of smoke in the hotel. But this is the way it is and we knew this when we booked.

Food was great. We are “Plain Jane’s” and will eat almost anything and we found a solid 3 course meal every evening from the choices provided. Really enjoyed the fish dishes.

Overall the hotel is a bit dated, but its only 200 meters from the main gondola and that was our main goal each morning, to get to the slopes.

Don’t go to the hotel expecting miracles. If you are going for the skiing and its all about the skiing then the hotel is perfect. Tea making facility in the rooms would be great.

This is our second time staying here. We find the price to be great value at €1700 for 4 adults (yea 12 is an adult) for full board from Dublin, booked 3 weeks prior to the leaving date. We also find that the ski schools are great value.

I was a bit shocked when i read the reviews of this place as it didn't sound very promising. Overall we were pleasantly surprised. The staff were very helpful ( a pee'd kids skisuit laundered promptly and cheaply), the food was good and plentiful and, whilst it needs a bit of a refurb overall it was a pleasant enough environment to visit with a 6 year old and a 64 yr old (my son and father respectively).
The rooms are a bit compact but I wasn't planning on holding a party in there and the three of us got on just fine.
For £600 odd at half term, half board, (Inghams) with a pool, 200 yards form the main gondola I think this was really good value.

  • Liked — Price, plenty of food and hot water, pool
  • Disliked — bit tired and dated decor, needs better soundproofing
