“The Elecon. Lovely people but the noisy extended family spoil it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2009

The Elecon is a friendly, clean hotel/apartment block. Always clean and tidy. Its true to say that you don't see the owners often, thats because they own a petrol station in the village and are there all day, but they do open the bar at night and do make an effort to make conversation. When we went in september, there was no problems generally but the owners daughter and family live in the block at the side of the pool and they ruined the peace and quiet all day every day!

The husband drives a taxi so he's off out of the way most days, but the daughter schreeches and screams at her kids all the time. I'm sure that Costa and Eleni are oblivious to the noise when they are at home. Its such a shame, but how do you tell someone to be quiet when it's their home and you are a visitor? The obvious answer is just don't go back!

We had a week here in September. This is our 3rd time to Polis and like it for its quietness, smallness and excellent restaurants. We went back to the Elecon as we enjoyed it 10 years ago on a 'allocated on arrival' last minute break. Our intention was a week of sunbathing - nothing more - and it was certainly the weather for it - very hot. The rooms here are basic but spotlessly clean. We had a balcony overlooking the pool area, so were fortunate as the view at the rear was poor and I heard several guests complaining. The room has enough amenities to make hot drinks and to keep lunch and most importantly the wine cool! I did not go on holiday to cook of an evening so as far as we're concerned the rooms are adequate! the pool is a good size and there is plenty of space around it. There are a number of shops including a large supermarket literally a 5 minute walk away. The town itself complete with bars and restaurants is about a 15 minute walk. The beach is about 30-40 minutes away on foot and is a lovely walk albeit energy zapping in the heat! From the beach you can take a coastal path into Latchi - another 30 minutes on - which is nice walk of an evening and there are some good restaurants on the harbour front.
The BIG downside to these apartments is the noise that the kids from the owner's extended family (who live in the apartment block opposite the main accommodation block, on the other side of the pool). They were really noisy when they were about and it was as though nobody could speak to one another - everyone had to shout. We are sure that this apartment block wasn't built when we last went to Elecon and whilst they are entitled to their noise, it was a bit disturbing for guests and even more so when they came to use the pool - they seemed to disregard any other pool users!! I had read about the noise on earlier reviews and wasn't particularly put off - however we were surprised how much it did actually impact on our enjoyment. Coupled with this was some traffic noise from the main road and a cockerel who seemed to crow whenever he felt like it regardless of hour!! That said, the weather was great, the food was fab in Polis and Latchi and the apartments were good value.

The Elecon Apartments are basic but spotlessly clean, with regular changes of sheets and towels. There are just two gas rings for those who wish to cook and no microwave or toaster so be aware! There is a kettle and fridge. The owners, Costa and Eleni are lovely and very friendly and try their best to converse in English though Costa struggles! For us, one problem was that because it is family run, the pool area was taken over by their family and friends during a Cypriot public holiday which fell during our stay. It was noisy and not at all relaxing, due to dive bombing and general very high spirited antics. Also, the rest of the family ( 2 x daughters, 2 x son-in-laws and 3 x boys ) live in the block opposite the apartments and were rowing CONSTANTLY! The boys ran riot and were always shouting, and on one ocassion had a full on fist/kicking fight right beside the pool! The mother seemed to have little or no control and was usually screaming her head off at them! It did spoil things. On one morning, we were awoken at 6.45am by the banging of a drum and loud "singing!" by the oldest boy who seemed desperate for attention of any kind. It lasted for about an hour until she screamed at him to stop. We made the best of it, but it was tiresome. Plenty of tavernas etc. nearby in the village square. Beach very stony, invest in some suitable shoes!

  • Liked — very clean

My husband and I have just reurned from a delightful two week stay in the Elecon apts in Polis , We found the owners very friendly and helpful the apts very clean and very handy for the village and about a 15min walk to the beach . Plenty of places to eat and not too expensive, though a car is an advantage if you wish to sight see as it is an hour to get to the nearest main town of Paphos. We would stay here again . Worst part of holiday was the Airport coming home it is much too small for volume of passengers not enough seats and even the floor full standing room only.

Polis is a scruffy little town near the coast. The kindest thing that can be said about it is
" an up and coming building site". Cement lorries, broken pavements and dust. Polis it not a tourist resort, never has been, & never will be. There are a handful of tavernas & even
fewer souvenir shops, totally depressing. The shore, sorry beach, is a good 30min walk
away from town centre. Save your strength, there is nothing there, not a single deck chair
just grey sand & pebbles.

If you must visit this part of Cyprus then stay around Paphos or if you want a really quiet
and tidy beach resort then try Latchi a few miles west of Polis. Here you will find water
sports, diving & cruises etc. The beach has the usual amenities and the tavernas are more
upmarket. One even has a fire for those chilly spring evenings. Finally, the locals are as
friendly & hospitable as ever. They cannot do enough for you. The food is always good
fresh and reasonably priced. Just don't stay in Polis!!!.

Although our apartment at Elecon was clean & spacious, thats all that can be said about
it. No one on reception when we arrived or left. We were shown to our apt by two little
boys because their mother had a broken leg. No tourist information, not a single leaflet
just nothing. All very depressing. I cannot find anything nice to say about the place.
We spent our final day in a hotel in Paphos because we had had enough.

The staff, I think, generally try to keep the apartments clean and the areas tidy, but we were constantly short of loo rolls and we had to steal them from the public loos! We would have asked for some, but the staff were never there! Furthermore, our shower fitment was broken necessitating a two person approach to showering! Again, we were unable to report the fault. We only saw them open the bar once. They were just never around when you needed them. Another couple had a damp mattress on their bed. The apartments are not in a pretty setting and the pool is in the centre of the buildings - it is virtually always in shade so doesn't warm up. It would have to be very hot before I would consider going in (again). You can sunbath all day though.
Polis centre is ok but about a 15 min stroll away and you soon get tired of the samey menus and lack of choice. On the upside, no English bars, no tacky places, no horrible takeaways and fairly peaceful, so a welcome change. It is not near the beach, which was a good 40 min walk away and it's rubbish when you get there, grey sandy/pebbles - although there were life guards there. The road by the apartments is noisy most of the time. As usual, the tour operators quoted from their book of fantasy, artistic licence and complete rubbish.
