“'From Cyprus with love'.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2013

At the time of our stay (June 2013) the newly-built Hotel Club St. George was enjoying what we believe is known in the trade as a 'soft opening'.

Although the structural building work involved in this extensive new holiday villa, apartment and studio complex appears to have been completed, judging by the number of apartment blocks that have yet to have their solar panels and hot water tanks installed on their roofs, fewer than a quarter of the total number of apartments and studios here have been furnished and are ready for renting to guests.

As with all new developments there are inevitably going to be teething problems - as there was for us the day after we arrived at our apartment when the cold and the hot water suddenly stopped flowing. However, full praise to the ever helpful staff at Club St. George as a plumber was called immediately. He arrived very promptly and fixed the problem (a faulty water pump switch).

Indeed, we cannot praise the staff here highly enough. They were always helpful, friendly, courteous and accommodating.

Our accommodation was almost exactly as advertised/expected therefore we were not disappointed with it. Being brand new there were a few minor items that we suspect will be added as the resort develops/responds to guests' suggestions - such as the provision of more kitchen equipment such as saucepans, a chopping board, microwavable dishes and ovenproof dishes plus tea towels, coasters for hot drinks and so on. Meanwhile, an unexpected bonus was the communal roof terrace above each apartment block which we found ideal for sunbathing early and late in the day. (As the roof terraces do not have any chairs or sunshades on them they get a little hot during the middle of the day !)

Again, owing to its newness, some people might find that the resort appears to be a bit of a 'concrete jungle' at present but we would guess that once the trees and shrubs around the resort have become better established future guests are less likely to feel this way.

In addition to 2 large swimming pools with sun decks and loungers etc., the resort has its own on-site mini market - that stocks most, if not all, of the basic provisions required for self-catering - and a restaurant - that offers breakfast and, in the evenings, a fairly extensive buffet selection at a very reasonable 12 Euros per head, (although we think some guests might get rather bored with the selection if they ate here every night). They also offer a 'take-away' service to guests. The bar - which is located within the restaruant - is open all day and through the evenings.

The restaurant is an adequate size to cater for the existing levels of occupancy but we would hope that the owners (Panareti's Resorts) have plans to extend their catering facilities when the remaining villas and apartments are completed and occupied.

For those wishing to 'eat out' there are a number of very good Cypriot Tavernas just a short taxi ride away - such as Petros Family Restaurant and Angelika's Bar & Restaurant in Chlorakas. We also enjoyed the 25 minute walk (up the hill from Club St. George, left at the new street lights, right at the next two 'T' junctions and left at the 3rd) to Ollie's (Bar and Restaurant) in Tremithousa - a good destination for those craving the delights of a small and friendly British pub/restaurant - with tables, chairs and sunshades outside - while in Cyprus.

Alternatively, if you turn left at the first 'T' junction, you can experience a very pleasant and scenic country walk along the hillside that runs along the back of the Club St. George resort.

During parts of our stay we seemed to be the only British guests at Club St. George. As we already knew, Cyprus has seen a real boom in Russian visitors in recent years and these appeared to make up the vast majority of the other guests during most of our stay. Not a problem of course but, if you are English speaking and are coming here intending to socialise, knowing a few words of Russian wouldn't go amiss !

Although we were not surprised to find so many Russian visitors we were surprised that Club St. George was so popular with young families - although children are catered for - as it is located a fair drive north from Paphos and well away from the sea, (although the sea is visible in the distance from the resort). However, to be fair, the resort does offer its guests complimentary - if not yet 100% reliable when we wanted to use them - transfers to/from Paphos and other destinations.

Most days we chose to use the 100% reliable local family run taxi company named Alpha Taxis. (Business cards for them are available in the resort's reception). Yes, we had to pay for our taxis, but their fares were not unreasonable and we preferred to travel on our own in comfort and at times that suited us. We would very highly recommend Alpha Taxis to anyone staying in the Paphos area of Cyprus.

As with all resorts, it is 'pot luck' as to what the other guests are going to be like during your stay. Being in our early 60's, we found the young children running around shouting and shrieking loudly at times - particularly in the restaurant and the pool areas - a big negative. We were also unfortunate enough to encounter 'neighbours' who were very drunk and rowdy late at night and others who returned very late at night, scraped their furniture around for ages and talked loudly until daybreak.

Meanwhile, because the resort currently has all of the apartments in each apartment block numbered exactly the same (i.e. on our floor (the middle floor) 'our' block had a room 101, 102 and 103 and so did all of the other similar design of blocks !) it is probably not surprising that we had other guests trying their keys in 'our' door during the night and other guests repeatedly ringing 'our' door bell and knocking on our door very early in the morning ! Having said that, each block has a different name and there are name plates on the exterior walls. (We have suggested to the resort management that it would be a good idea to re-number their rooms in some way to avoid this kind of confusion in future and, to their credit, they took this suggestion onboard, together with other constructive suggestions we made).

From our experiences, for couples like us who are looking for a quiet romantic break in Cyprus, we would recommend booking one of the detached villas at the resort for, although you might still be unlucky and have some noisy neighbours during the daytime, you are far less likely to be disturbed by your neighbours at night.

(Our '3 blob' overall rating for this resort reflects the fact that we did not find our apartment as suitable as we had hoped for couples on a quiet romantic break).

5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2013

Just back from a short (4 day) trip to Paphos where we stayed at St George for the first time. We had a late flight arrival but were met at the site by night porter and manager who kindly arranged drinks and sandwiches for us as we checked in.

The site is brand new and as such is spotless. The facilities are good and the staff are very helpful. As the site is laid out over a reasonably large area it is peaceful and not crowded.

Restaurant is fantastic value for money with €5 full breakfast and 3 courses in the evening for €12 and the food is good quality with local dishes as well as the basics.

Lots of pools and sunbeds and the mini market on the site seemed to be well stocked.

The only tiny criticism I would make is that the gym could do with some more machines or a rack of free weights. Fine for those who like a treadmill but a little limited otherwise.

Having been there for business I will be taking my family back for a holiday later this year.
