Okay so it wasn't bad but equally it didn't look like any of the photos in the official literature nor in some of the 2008 travel brochures, they're either using artistic licence or an airbrush! So what of the accomodation, well all the rooms appear to be air conditioned which is a blessing when the heat never drops below 40 during the day and not much below 30 at night, they're clean and fairly well appointed, that said the hotel is spilt into two distinct parts one of the which, the Harbour Suites, are much newer and far better kitted out than the older parts. The pool is big and clean and there are plenty on sunbeds, be warned you need an early riser in your party to secure one though. The Basilica operates a policy of not allowing personal drinks and food around the pool area, obviously these can be bought from the hotel, however if you're local or Russian these rules appear not to apply. If you're after a vibrant night life then the Basilica isn't for you the bar was all but deserted during the evening only being frequented by a few people on their way back from the resort at around 22:30/23:00. They try and have a few themed nights during the week, Saturday night is Kareoke, albeit the lack of people in the bar area meant that the on site "entertainer" (more of her later) spent most of the evening "singing" by herself. Equally though if you've got a young familly and want to get them to bed early then unless you're in the Harbour Suites or away from the bar area you're unlikely to get much peace and quiet either, while the bar is empty most of the evening the bar staff do still like to play the music pretty loud...no doubt to keep them awake and alleviate the boredom! So what of the on site "entertainer" firstly she can't sing, secondly her idea of entertainment is to turn up, turn on loud music and disappear, when she does reappear it seems to be with some young "rent a crowd" from other more vibrant hotels to add some spice to proceedings...if you're idea of mid afternoon aqua aerobics is having the pool taken over by a group of rowdy twentysomethings then this is for you...just bear in mind the young children who are worried to go into the pool while this is going on. The remainder of the staff are efficient, I wouldn't go as far as to say they are polite and friendly though. And what of Paphos? Well if you haven't been for 10/15 years then you're in for a shock, pubs serving mixed grills, chicken and chips and all day breakfasts abound if you're after traditional greek food then try the harbour it's a bit more expensive and it is very busy but at least there's a sense you're on holiday abroad rather than a feeling that you're on the East or West coast of England as is the case in the rest of the resort. What ever you do though whether male or female 18 or 80 is try the local brew, Keo, ice cold straight from the bottle it has to be one of the best beers anywhere in the world.
