“Hidden Treasure: Beach Bar”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

The Thalassa is a very good 5 star Spa hotel bit it has a superb restaurant and a hidden treasure of a small, exclusive Beach Bar, open to non-guests of the hotel.

The food is beautifully prepared, good sized delicious portions of fresh fish and seafood. A good selection of wines, and desserts to die for......

With excellent service by a professional staff....

We were looking for 4 lazy nights/days, post cold Easter, in sunshine just relaxing in stylish surroundings- and found it.
While the building is nothing to look at from the outside- inside it is a well designed. Normally i don't like hotel pool areas for sunning myself, and prefer the beach, but this was different. Given that the adjacent beaches look good from a distance but not so good close-up, the sea at this time of year was cold, and the hotel was not very busy- spending time by the pool was a lovely option. Particularly as the outdoor spaces around the pool, in front of the bar and restaurant are so nicely set out with different height areas and comfy seating.
We went for the cheapest room and it was fine, facing the quieter, less scenic sunset view. We were promptly moved for the 4th night when we mentioned a noise coming from a plant door on our balcony, to a room facing the pool and sunrise. In some ways this was nicer but the sun was very Intrusive especially in the morning and hard to sleep through, and in warmer months I may well prefer the sunset side, high up and as close to the sea end as possible.
Service from all areas/personnel was excellent.
We ate in the restaurant twice and had 2 very good meals. But prices were 5 star, the menu limited if staying for more than 5 nights, and the atmosphere a little lacking due to there being so few of us in a big room. I'm sure in hotter months when you can eat evening meals on the terrace, it is nicer. The food is good and a deal with half board would be well worth taking.
Breakfasts, on the terrace, were excellent with a very good buffet and eggs cooked to order.
The spa looked very good but too expensive for me.
Do not consider eating at the very local taverna- we di and and had a meal that was inedible/
We liked La Vigna restaurant up the road on the strip of restaurants- see my separate review.
There is a very good local bus that passes very close by the hotel three time an hour, all journeys 1E, that goes to Pathos old harbour, via the strip. We used the bus to go to Pathos- we liked the look of the old harbour restaurants, but not much else.
We liked the no children under 12 hotel rule. Guests were mainly British with some Germans and Cypriots.
We would seriously consider returning to the hotel - but not in the high season

Room Tip: Sunrise view side for the better view but no sun after 5pm and maybe too much sun.Sunset side for a...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for selecting Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa for your recent "lazy" getaway and we are pleased that you were happy with your choice. The hotel aims to provide the ideal experience for a relaxing, pampering break.

When you stayed at the hotel this was the quieter season for the hotel and whilst this is preferred by some guests, it can be a little quiet in the restaurant in the evenings, but as you rightly stated when the evenings get a little warmer and guests are able to dine on the terraces this does offer a more cozy, intimate setting.

Thank you for mentioning the noise outside your room whilst at the hotel as this enables the hotel to do their utmost to rectify any situation to ensure that you have the most enjoyable stay,

We are pleased you spent time around the pool and took in the stunning sea views. The beach by the hotel is a blue flagged beach and as soon as the weather stabilizes the beaches are prepared for use.

Finally, we would like to thank you again for selecting our hotel and for taking the time to share your experiences and kind comments on TripAdvisor.

Kind regards,

This hotel is outstanding for the couple or single person just wanting to get away and relax. The fact that it is adults only should be a key indicator that it is relaxing. We spent two nights in this lovely hotel and I must say it is the most relaxed I have been in a long time. The cleanliness of the property is hard to match, the staff go out of there way to ensure you are taken care of. Access to beaches is very easy, one way is a nice quiet bay and the other is a more family oriented spot with water sports and a large sister hotel. As a guest of the Thalassa you are entitled to us the amenities of both hotels which was a very nice surprise and gave us lots of options for entertainment. The spa was very nice, clean and very knowledgeable and skilled staff. The chef in the Ambrosia is first rate, he creating some fantastic meals, portions are a little small for the price but that is just one persons opinion. Great wine selection and that staff in the restaurants are great, (especially George and Aristos).

Room Tip: All the rooms have a sea view either of the resort bay right next door or a beautiful bay looking ou...

Dear Mr. Craig,

We are delighted that you relaxed and enjoyed your stay at Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa. Indeed this adults only hotel aims to offer guests total relaxation away from all cares, so to hear that this was achieved delighted us.

The hotel also has the added advantage of offering guests the choice of dining and leisure facilities of the five star sister hotel the Coral Beach Hotel & Resort which is ideal for those who want to venture out of the hotel but do not want to go too far and we are pleased that you choose to experience this.

Finally, we would like to thank you for your kind review and for taking the time to share this with others on TripAdvisor.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa.

Fifth visit to the Thalassa, which speaks for itself. Having previously visited the neighbouring Coral Beach prior to its increasingly rapid decline into absolute mediocrity, the Thalassa remains a beacon of excellence for the Leptos Group.

Situated on a peninsula in a quiet location with either side of the hotel facing sunrise or sunset – go for the latter as the views over the bay are pleasant and not interrupted by the older Coral Beach Hotel.

From the outside, however, especially from a distance, it looks distinctly unprepossessing... however, once inside, it reveals its true quality. The hotel itself has a peaceful and relaxing ambience, the fact that children under 12 not generally allowed being a big part of that, is spotlessly clean and the bedrooms are nicely appointed without clutter – most were were actually designed as interconnecting rooms and have been made into bedroom and separate living room with two bathrooms which is always a bonus. We had a suite on the 6th floor with outstanding sea views from two sides of the room and two balconies. The rooms are spotlessly clean with bed linen and towels changed daily – the housekeeping staff are beyond reproach. Now, I grant you folks don’t visit the Med to watch TV, but during the late evening and first thing in the morning it would’ve been nice to’ve had more than two English-speaking news channels! The hotel needs to address this as a matter of some import – perhaps by investing in some upgraded digital equipment. Also, the wi-fi whist free [as it should be in a 5-star establishment] was temperamental and kept ‘dropping out’ which was annoying when one wanted to use the ‘net. This needs addressing/upgrading, also. The pool area is neat, tidy and excellently located for views of the surrounding area and well designed as a sun trap for the sunbed-inclined, with a nice beach bar on a lower level and stairway access to the sea. The Spa is quite expensive but you get what you pay for, which is all one can really expect. The gym is small, was not effectively air-conditioned during our stay and needs some upgrading.

The nearby beaches are nice enough, the surrounding land area at best 'okay' - a typically Cypriot mixture of villas, desolation, tipped rubbish, half-built structures and tourist establishments, not exactly alluring but classic coastal Cyprus - from the sublime to the ridiculous all in a mile. We’re biased, we love the place – but it does have a ‘character’ all of its own, not for all tastes, perhaps. About 10 minutes’ walk up a hill can be found Coral Plaza where there are restaurants and bars. It's tacky and something of a neon-nightmare after dark, but safe and not short of eateries - not many of them very good, unfortunately. I highly recommend Trattoria La Vigna, Emelios the owner is a charming host and splendid chef - and warn the discerning eater off the Tex Mex opposite - Rio Grande -- beyond abysmal.

Back inside the Thalassa, the breakfasts are excellent; with a very good choice – though surprisingly lacking bread loaves - the bread mainly consisted of dry rolls and batons - not at all impressive and the one black mark. Hugely disappointingly, the Psari fish restaurant remained closed throughout our stay, about which I was not too impressed. The Ambrosia restaurant is the other [decent, albeit costly] option if you plan to eat in - but the menu needs an overhaul.... the food is terrific but there is not enough to choose from desert-wise. If you're able to do so, book some nights Half Board direct with the hotel before you go - it's cheaper.

Our overall vacation experiences at the Thalassa have always been that the staff are very agreeable and helpful, and this time was no different - particularly but not exclusively the following: on the front desk Euan who is ever efficient and personable, Penelope [Popi] who's diligence and charm are always to the fore, and Nicholas, plus Thomas of course; in the restaurant Aristos the knowledgeable and cheerful Matre'd, both Olga’s who were engaging as always, cheerful-George and Andreas, and at the bar, Mario. In overall charge, Pambos Michael, the former Manager who's now GM over the Coral Beach as well as the Thalassa who has always been willing to our observations and address any issues swiftly and positively, and once again [ably assisted by his PA Christina] dealt with an annoying matter relating to IT - it wasn’t solved but it was addressed swiftly and timely feedback provided - I am confident it will be resolved by our next visit. We met the new Ops Manager of the Thalassa – seemed like a pleasant chap, and finally a mention for Apricot-the-cat – one to melt the heart and bring a smile.

Would we return? Yes. Will we return? Yes.

Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose a sunrise room - the higher up the better.

Dear Guest,

We are delighted that your choose Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa for the fifth time and that once again you enjoyed your stay with us.

Thank you for describing the hotel so well and our rooms that offer two bathrooms "one for me and one for you" which is a great convenience for couples. Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa is indeed an adults only hotel and the ideal choice for those travelling without children or who have older children.

We do apologies that you were facing issues with the WiFi, our IT have already taken action towards upgrading this, do note that the WiFi does operate well in the hotel lobby. We understand that you do expect there to have more than two English channels and again this is something the hotel has proceeded with and is waiting on.

With regards to Anagenisis, the Spa allows us to offer you a tip; you may check the hotel web site under packages for great spa offers and packages that may meet your preferences that you may request separate to your accommodation. The hotel's gym may not be very big but with only 58 rooms we do feel that it is more than adequate and there is also a separate fitness room. Sorry that the air condition in the gym was not in full operation during your stay but it certainly is during the summer months, we do hope this did not cause you much discomfort.

Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa is situated by the village of Coral Bay and adjoining the Akamas peninsular an area protected by UNESCO, this area is known for its natural unspoiled beauty, with green hills, blue flagged beaches and any buildings are all low rise and mostly are of detached houses with private pools. Actually by law you cannot build over four stores high so the hotel is the tallest building in the area. Coral Bay itself is a very tiny village and yes it is indeed mainly a tourist area. There is a small selection of bars, restaurants and tourist shops, but for a larger choice one may venture into Paphos which is 15 minute drive.

With regards to breakfast at the hotel we aim to have at least five different types of breads for guests to choose from, but we can look into this further. We value our guests comments as this is what assists us in constantly improving and we have noted your comments regarding the selection of desserts on the Ambrosia menu.

On a final note we are delighted to hear that you were well looked after by our whole team and that they made you feel welcome and dealt with your needs efficiently. We take this opportunity to thank you for your time in writing about Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa.

The team at Thalassa and of course Apricot the cat are now looking forward to welcoming you back again soon.

Best regards,

We had a corner suite for ourselves and our son. The suites are essentially two bedrooms joined so we had the advantage of two full bathrooms. The bedroom part had a large comfortable, the sitting room area had a sofa and two armchairs and I was impressed that our son was given a full proper single bed rather than a sofa bed or rollaway.
On the balcony, larger because it was a corner suite , was a wooden table, two chairs and two lovely loungers with cushions.
The only disadvantage of the room that I could find was that there is no door between the two room areas.
There was a coffee maker, but no iron/board.
The hotel has sea views from both sides as it is on a promontory and you can hear the sound of the waves from your room. The views are gorgeous.
Outside the hotel in the gardens are sofas both in the sun and in the shade, and ample sun loungers. There is a beach bar, but no beach of its own though you can easily walk to one. The pool was freezing.
We had a half board arrangement which I would recommend as the food is very good. We ate there every night and had good fish and very good steak over the week. You can eat inside or out. The breakfast buffet was very good though we asked for the very weak coffee to be replaced by cappuccino which was good.
The fact that this hotel is for over 12 years old meant that it was very peaceful.
Service was excellent throughout, though verging on the over familiar at times from one or two of the older male waiters. The Russian ladies in the restaurant were excellent.
Webwould not stay anywhere else in Cyprus.

Room Tip: Would recommend sea view and half board

Dear Mrs. Diane,

We have read your review from your recent stay with us and we are delighted that you and your family enjoyed your holiday at Thalassa Boutique Hotel & Spa.

The hotel is designed for total relaxation and we are pleased that this is what you experienced. Thank you for your description of our rooms, view and the dining at the hotel we must say that you sum everything up perfectly.

The hotel is built on a cliff so has the unique advantage of sea views from three sides, so all rooms enjoy views of the sea. Below the hotel and just steps away from the hotel's beach bar is the famous sandy beach of Coral Bay. The beach bar is popular in the summer for guests who prefer the beach and sea.

Once again thank you for recommending our hotel and we look forward to having the pleasure of welcoming you and your family back again.

Kind regards,

We had a fantastic week-end at this beautiful hotel in june 2012, with two other couples-friends of us. It is a litle-expensive, small but nice & clean. The pool is small , lovely, quiet and clean . No families and kids beacause there are no activities in this hotel. It has spa, the rooms are suites with nice living room furnitures, very-very clean, coffee maker machin (free coffee) and (free)fresh welcoming fruits in the room. Because our room was not ready when we arrived ,they offered us coctail-drinks.The stuff is very polite & smiling and during the time we were at the swimming-pool ,they offered us small peaces of fruits. We had only breakfast in this hotel, it was excellent buffet .The Coral beach is a few metres from the hotel. You can also enjoy the sunset at the < Oniro by the sea > not far away from the hotel.
I strongly recommend this hotel only for couples .

We would usually go to Coral Beac hotel but as this was being renovated we were directed to Thalassa. The gym is small but very nice with a lovely swimming pool and spa area. You genuinely feel relaxed after going there. The staff are pleasant and efficient. We also ate in the main restaurant, a buffet for Green Monday and found everything to be very tasty and beautifully presented.
