“Alexander the Fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW

We have visited many times but this is the first since the comprehensive programme of renovations has been completed. An already great hotel is now simply fabulous.

Check-in is effortless as other reviews have described. The rooms are exceptional and the housekeeping smart and discrete.

The new half board plus arrangement allows you to opt for either lunch or dinner, so day-time or evening trips are easy to organise.

For pool and sun enthusiasts this hotel is heaven. On your first morning, stroll out to the poolside cabin and choose a sunbed location of your preference, i.e. full sun, shady, quiet, buzzing etc. That spot is exclusively yours for the duration of your holidays. So no six-thirty dash with the beach towels.

The bar and the wider bar-service to the public lounges is excellent under the supervision of the famous George - now established as one of Alexander's treasures.

The kitchen brigade have moved up another few notches and the meals and the variety of venues cannot be faulted. Eating outside the hotel on a B&B basis has become far less enticing.

But the outstanding feature of the Alexander is the warmth, friendliness and efficiency of the staff. Management must be congratulated for training and enthusing their staff from whom a pride in their service to guests and loyalty to the hotel simply shines through. When guests leave Phillipa, the Guest Relations Manager, with bouquets of flowers this hotel is doing something right.

You will gather from the above that I am recommending this hotel for your stay in Paphos.

Oh, by the way, it has the best location in Kato Paphos to view the 2500 year old harbour at night.

Room Tip: Price reflects view, privacy and noise. Road facing rooms are nevertheless double glazed, curtained...

A long time since we did a beach hotel, and The Alexander the Great did not disappoint. We stayed Half board which in the end turned out to be a very wise choice. The food was first class in every restaurant and was there was so much variation you just couldn't go wrong.
We had on of the Cabanas (41) near the Adults only pool and was a great location.
The staff were excellent in every department.
What could be better?? Not a lot, but if they could improve in the quality of the Entertainers in the evening that would go along way to making this hotel perfect.
Would I go there again, no problem a big yes.
Thanks to all the staff making it so enjoyable.

Room Tip: Room 041 is the best of all the Cabanas

Yes, this is a terrific hotel - no complaints. However, at the risk of ruffling a few feathers on this site, I have to say I didn't find it helpful, with a last minute booking, having to wade through pages and pages of reviews that only told me what a great holiday people had had. As a first time visitor to Cyprus, let alone this hotel, I was looking for more practical advice and information.

Sad to say this wasn't forthcoming from the Thomson reps' briefing either but, fortunately the hotel has a customer relations desk run by a very competent and knowledgeable lady called Phillipa and Reception staff who are also very helpful. Phillipa provides advice on places of interest to visit (according to your tastes), escorted trips, hiking and much more.

We paid £80 online in advance to keep a room until 6.00pm on the date of departure only to have the Thomson reps inform us all we could reserve a room for 40 euros via hotel reception!

The rooms have minibars which can be emptied for you at a charge of over 5 euros a day for just using the fridge. However, if you keep the minibar as it is the hotel very reasonably allows you to use it for a few of your own items at no extra cost so we still had room to chill our water and cans of beer.

There is no charge for the room safe which is big enough for a couple of ipads/tablets.

Wifi is free and reaches the rooms and hotel grounds as well as the main public areas. It's a bit slow, especially at certain times of the day, but is still better than most holiday hotels.

Interactive TV in the room means you can keep an eye on your bar bill so it doesn't come as a shock at the end of your stay. There is also a good choice of British channels, including BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. As Cyprus is 2 hours ahead of the UK it's quite useful as the hotel entertainment usually ends by 11.00pm.

By the time we left - a week ago - dress code for dining changed to winter rules. Basically all men must not only wear trousers, they must also now wear closed shoes - not sandals!

All the good things about the hotel have been mentioned but we particularly appreciated the very comfortable beds, good food and sunbed allocation. There are also kettles and tea-making equipment in the rooms (topped up daily) and an ironing room. The only downside was the evening entertainment which was generally much like other hotels - mostly average.

While there is a small beach right outside the hotel the water is very shallow and its bottom is covered in stones. If you face the sea, turn left and walk less than 100 yards you will find a short ramp leading down to a municipal beach with deeper water and a sandy bottom. Heaven!

Car hire is available just across the road from the hotel at reasonable rates. Driving on the left makes it a doddle and road signs are in Cypriot and English. There are so many pretty villages to explore that we didn't manage to get up into the mountains, though wish we had. It takes over an hour to reach Limassol via the coastal road but the views are outstandingly beautiful, and it takes about 45 minutes via the motorway. Limassol has good parking on the seafront (for a few euros) and the old town is well worth wandering around - for the old buildings as much as for the museum, shops and cafes.

Do not be afraid to ask directions! The local people take great pleasure in helping tourists find their way around and they love to chat. We met some of the loveliest people this way and learned a lot.

Day trips can be booked via Reception and can take you all over the island if you're prepared to get up early and come back late. Good local tour companies cost less than half of the tour operators' rates. Average price was 25-30 euros for a whole day out.

Buses run from outside the hotel: 611 takes you the short distance to the bus station where you can then get other buses, eg 615 to Coral Bay. A day ticket covering the Paphos area can be bought on the first bus for 5 euros per person. They run frequently and are very clean and air conditioned.

There is a modern shopping mall about a mile from the hotel with mostly the same shops as back in the UK. There is also a very large covered market at the top of Paphos town (about 2 miles inland from Paphos sea front) selling the usual tourist bric-a-brac but in a very friendly way and it’s much more fun!

There are loads of archaeological sites around Paphos and, while we've never been too interested in these we were very impressed with the mosaics at the large site on Paphos sea front. Entry to most sites doesn't seem to be more than 4-5 euros.

Cyprus is a very beautiful, very green island – even at the end of August – and its people are a delight. I would totally recommend anyone visiting to get out and about and enjoy it.

Finally, all credit to the management for a very well run hotel with a happy, professional (and international) staff.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are quieter.

We arrived late on the 6th august for 11 nights. Overall we had an amazing holiday and we would say that Alexander the Great is close to a 5 star hotel. We experienced a couple of "niggles" which, if ironed out would definitely make this a five star hotel.

Check in:
Check in was quick and efficient and we were greeted with a cold drink which was nice. We were showed straight to our room and the porter bought our luggage.

Room:
We booked a 'side sea view' room at a supplement through Thomson. The room was absolutely lovely and perfectly clean. The bed was also huge and very comfortable. Maid service was fab and clean towels twice a day was a very big plus.
However our side sea view was very 'side'. Yes you could see the sea if you craned your neck to the right but basically the view was of the busy road. I wouldn't pay to upgrade my room to this again as it wasn't really worth it.

Food:
The food was beautiful and the a la carte restaurants were all lovely. We enjoyed the Italian best and so we visited twice during our stay. In the buffet there was plenty of choice and everything seemed very hot. We were full board so ate in the hotel buffet at lunchtime. The quality wasn't quite as good at lunch time and because it seemed very quiet we did wonder at times how long the food had been sitting there. This said, we never struggled to find something we liked.

Staff:
Staff throughout the hotel are absolutely fab. They are always smiling and made an effort to speak to us daily even at busy periods. Special mention to Emma and raj who we found to be particularly helpful and pleasant during our stay.

Pool:
The pool looks lovely and is in a wonderful setting. However this is also an area we found a few "niggles". Although the sunbed allocation is an absolutely great idea and avoids the rush in the mornings, we found that the sunbeds were very close together. At times we felt a bit packed in like sardines and I know other people around us felt the same way. Additionally, even though the pool looks lovely, it definitively needs a good clean. I heard so many people moan that it was 'cloudy' and you couldn't see the bottom at times. We understand that in prime time august when it is inevitably hot, the pool will become dirtier quicker but we felt that it really needed a good clean to get rid of debris and cloudy water on a daily basis. We saw the pool attendants cleaning the outside of the pool but not actually using a pool vacuum to clean inside. Perhaps this would be our recommendation to the management as we know that they are always seeking ideas for how to improve?

Location:
The hotel's location is brilliant. It is about a 10 minute walk to the harbour along a promenade. We like the centre and there are plenty of bars and restaurants you can visit if you want to eat out etc.

Overall we has a very enjoyable holiday and would definitely return AND recommend Alexander the Great hotel. It is a very good four star hotel and ideally located. Thanks Alexander the Great!!!

We just come back from here, After two weeks September 2014,They do one thing that no other hotel does, they allocate sunbeds!!!! so from day one its stress-free.
We arrived early evening given a cool drink on arrival, given are room number(338) after filling in forms, taken to our room by porter, the room amazing!! but I was so upset when I opened curtains to find no balcony, we assumed we would have one due to cost of holiday, wasn't worried about what view we had we were not spending that much time in our room anyway, were on holiday! but its nice to sit and have a coffee etc.
Once unpacked we went to reception, the hotel manger listened to what I had to say and he said He would see what he could do. at the Thomson welcoming event we spoke to Julie and again with the manager and within an hour we had been allocated another room (144) the following day. From that day on we enjoyed ourselves. No more tears I am happy to say!!!!!
Food amazing - Location brilliant - Everywhere clean and spotless - towels changed a couple of times a day- beds so comfortable. pools lovely try them all and try all the restaurants.

While your there try "The secret Garden" and "Germmes" across the road from the front of the hotel you will be surprised believe me !!!

I want to say a big thank you to Sophia the room maid who was amazing sadly retiring in October, The main lobby bar staff Eric- Angelina -Makaila who were always ready with a smile and a chat always asked about our day and not forgetting the elderly Gentleman at the sunbed allocated desk always friendly and helpful. The life Guard who always had a smile and a chat with you, to the "All Stars" entertainment team they work extremely hard all day every day and to all the other staff who made our time their special and we will be back next year

Room Tip: DO NOT ASSUME YOU WILL GET A BALCONY when you book , having a balcony is better whatever the view t...

What a wonderful holiday, our flight was delayed by an hour so by the time we arrived it was close to closing time for the restaurant. We were sent straight to the restaurant and told not to worry about check in , we could do it after dinner. We did not feel we were rushed through dinner and the food was fantastic, as it was every night. After our meal we were given a cool drink while completing the check in. We felt all the staff genuinely wanted to make sure you had a great stay. Loved the sun bed allocation and got 2 beds on the grassy area overlooking the sea. Our room was lovely and kept very clean. A problem with water not draining from the bath/shower was sorted very quickly. Staff in the Alexander bar were great (loved the Cayman Mama cocktails!!) as were staff in all the venues. Can't remember all the names but thanks to George in the bar and Quentin in the restaurants.
As we were on half board we had meals in the Japanese and Italian restaurants as well as the main buffet restaurant. All the meals were delicious but I think my favourite was the Japanese, a wonderful setting outside watching the sunset over Paphos harbour.
For breakfast there was again plenty of choice to suit all tastes.
Entertainment team were full of energy day and night and provided some good entertainment in the evening.
The pool was lovely and kept very clean and the water was warm.
There are only 2 reasons for not giving 5 star rating.
1. Although requested a year in advance we were unable to have late check out.
2. There is not a non-smoking area round the pool/sunbed area or while watching the evening entertainment.
Neither of these spoiled our holiday and we are already looking into going back same time next year.

Room Tip: Higher floors have the better view and if possible I would go for full sea view.

Stayed at the Alexander the Great for two weeks from 13th July. My daughter was getting married. The hotel is really first rate and the staff cannot do enough to make you welcome. The organisation of the wedding was faultless. We stayed on after the wedding to make a proper holiday of the trip and can only say that it was a good decision. The food is excellent and the service top notch. I would recommend trying the theme restaurants although the main dining room is good too. The only fault and it is a small one is that the sunbeds are crammed a bit close together.Overall a very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: get a room on the sea side as the balconies facing the main road dont seem to have a great outlook.
