“The Great Alexander !!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014

We weren't expecting to go back to Cyprus as we have been several times before with friends who have a house there, but we got an offer which was too good to miss, and we are so glad we took it up !! The hotel is beautiful, having been recently refurbished, and it is very tastefully decorated and furnished throughout. The rooms are well-serviced with ample towels, lovely bedding, and all the facilities you could want(we did actually request a quiet room, but ended up directly above the entertainment venue, but it didn't go on much beyond 11 pm so it wasn't too disturbing !) The food is varied, catering for every taste, and the presentation is excellent- they go to such a lot of trouble with the garnishing that it is almost a work of art ! There are four restaurants on-site, namely the main restaurant, where evening meals are served, the breakfast restaurant which is also where you can sample typical Cypriot food during your stay, the Garibaldi which is Italian, and the Thai restaurant. The latter two were particularly enjoyable. The Garibaldi is a quiet oasis away from the bustle of the main restaurant, and the food is delicious and served at you table rather than self-service. There is a very refined air about it, not least because there are no children there !! It is also small, so there are not many customers in at any one time .The Thai restaurant is outside, and on the evening we were there it was very balmy and pleasant sitting watching the world go by, and looking out towards the port- an uninterrupted view. The food again was delicious- and my husband was introduced to sushi (I don't want raw fish !!) for the first time-and enjoyed it, even eating it with the chop sticks provided !! All-in-all the eating experience was much to be recommended.
The out door facilities and pool area were scrupulously clean and well appointed. All the beds were comfortable. We were fortunate to get beds in the Adults Only serenity pool- this was beautifully designed with very comfortable loungers and attentive service from the bar staff. The sunbed allocation system is a great idea- I don't know why more hotels don't do this- it saves having to beat everyone to your preferred positions every morning! Of course, for this scheme to work, there has to be enough beds for all the guests, and if there is one criticism, it is that the beds do seem to be very close together , although we didn't have that problem where we were. There were also beds on the beach side of the hotel, but the public path went through the grounds, so it could feel abit cut-off from the main pool area but probably people like that, and certainly there was always plenty to be looking at out at sea.
One of the greatest assets of the Alexander is the staff- they were absolutely delightful, right from the general manager Andreas (O.K. so he's an Arsenal supporter, but we won't hold that against him !!) to the sous-chefs and the cleaners. Andreas was very visible, not shut away in an office, and he always made an effort to talk to guests, to eat in the restaurants, and generally be available. The Head Chef, similarly, was always around and available for comments. The waiting staff were attentive and pleasant, willing to chat- as much as their job would allow, of course ! but there was no surliness which can be the case in many hotels. Emma ,who was in charge of seating in the various dining rooms, always had a friendly word or quip, remembering names and preferences. The young pool bar staff were a joy- many Eastern Europeans, and so pleasant and smartly dressed with excellent English. As many reviewers have said, they couldn't do enough for you.
As you can see, we were very impressed with the whole experience, but I would just like to add a word of warning to the hotel management and guests going there- the baths are a nightmare- they are not easy to get in and out of, and are very slippery and the base slopes- my husband slipped getting out on the first day there, and there were several incidents of similar accidents whilst we were there including a lady who broke her ribs and spent the whole of her holiday, and more, in hospital. They were very attentive to my husband when they knew what had happened and we were offered a non-slip bath mat, but it rather took the edge off, and he would not use the bath again for the rest of the holiday as he was afraid of slipping again. They do offer a mat, but most of the incidents happened on the first or second day of the holiday, before you realise the problem. This is something which really does need addressing as it can spoil your holiday- we were lucky but others, particularly older people, may not be so fortunate.
But, to end on a positive note !!_ this is a great hotel, and one which I would have no hesitation in recommending- and Paphos itself has really smartened itself up, since it is a candidate city for the 2017 European Centre of Culture, so it is much nicer and fresher than it was.
All- in -all, a great holiday !
(p.s. sorry you won't win the Premier League again next season, Andreas!!)

Room Tip: whichever the room-BEWARE OF THE BATH!!

Thank you for your comments about the recent renovations and the decoration and refurbishments, also that you found your room well serviced with ample supplies of towels. I am pleased to read that you enjoyed the food and in particular the Kiku Japanese and the Italian Garibaldi Restaurant.

The sun bed allocation system always proves to be very popular and thank you for mentioning it. I am delighted to read that you found our staff to be a great asset, I am proud of each and everyone of them. I will personally share your review with all of them and in particular to head Chef Pambos, Emma in the restaurant and the bar waiters and waitresses.

We have been visiting this hotel every year for 6 or 7 years and always found it marvellous. It is a very short walk along the beach into Paphos so useful in the evening. A really good thing is that you can order your sunbed for the whole holiday at the beginning so there is no pressure for a good sunbed location. Also, there is a separate adults part of the sunbathing area. The food in the restaurants is excellent although we do eat out in the Paphos itself too where there are good value restaurants. Good sized balconies where you can sit with your G&T and watch people walking into the town along the coastal walk. 3rd floor is best but lower levels are still fine. Entertainment most evenings.

What a lovely hotel. Clean, fresh and the staff are so helpful. Room was spotless, comfortable and welcoming. We did B&B as the local restaurants are very good value.
We were so impressed that we've booked again for October.

Room Tip: We booked a superior room with sea view - much bigger and great view of the harbour.

Returned to Paphos after some years. Most impressed with the improvements to the coast walk that have been made
Even by Cyprus standards the Staff were great. In the Restaurant the level of attentiveness was perhaps too high, but that's better than being ignored.
For those who like the beach and sea swimming, the beach immediately opposite is not great but the next bay is better and it's only a very short walk.
Almost everything about this hotel is first class from the IDEAL sunbed allocation to the accommodation. One tiny niggle though. I understand that there has been a recent refurbishment. In our bathroom the bath 'plug' was a rather overcomplicated piece of engineering that involved a shiny chrome knob that had to be given a half turn to release the water.
Turning this was easy when the bath was empty but when full and with water pressing down on the plate that serves as a plug, with wet hands, very difficult to turn fully. (Use a small towel).
My advice is to go for simplicity next refurbishment. Use a plug!.
AND THIS IS THE ONLY THING I COULD FIND TO BE NEGATIVE ABOUT.
I found the food to be good most of the time. Odd nights when I didn't find much to appeal, but I can perhaps be over fussy. My Wife for whom the 'sweet trolley' is THE most important part of the meal was VERY COMPLIMENTARY though.
All in all a splendid, relaxing holiday.

Gorgeous hotel by the beach. Has an indoor & outdoor pool with happy hours at the pool bar! As a young couple, the room was spacious enough with a balcony to sit and watch the different blues of the sea. Service & breakfast was great – typical Continental breakfast. The spa could have been better. This was the only hotel we have seen where they have entertainment activities in the evening for both kids & adults. The location is great if you want to be by the beach and go out for drinks and have a good time. Not many clubs around though. There’s a mall close by – King’s Avenue and some nice places to shop & dine nearby as well.

We had hired a car on rent and travelled on our own from Larnaca with a map and it was a great experience and the highlight of our trip since this was the first time we drove around on our own. No difficult procedures, all you need is your driving license!

All in all, a very relaxed holiday which was exactly what we were looking for… 4 days of beach, wine, food, relaxation & some water therapy!

Just back from 11 days at Alexander the Great.

The staff are great!
The sunbed allocation system is great (if like us you get your preferred spot after a couple of days) - if you don't you are likely to be in a row on the grass divided by the public footpath going in and out of town which has a constant stream of people passing by!
The position is great - just a ten or fifteen minute walk into town.
The rooms was OK - a side sea view (just) because we requested a bathroom with a walk in shower. The bathroom was great!
The food is certainly not great! Breakfast was OK but the evening buffet was not very appetising. Only one type of (local) fish was served every night (albeit in a variety of sauces). There was a different item each night on the "carvery" section but apart from that everything else was left in heated containers. The salad section was OK but if that was all you wanted, there was nothing to put with it - i.e. cold meat or fish. We did go to the Italian restaurant one night and that was an improvement but did not try either the Japanese or Greek restaurants. They are not all open every night - you have to ask at reception for the dates.
If you are planning a holiday here I would advise booking B & B.
