“Basic accommodation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

The Helios is currently being prepared for the summer season. It is unfortunate that this has involved lots of maintenance work being done during our holiday. We found this intrusive but recognise that work needs to be done in preparation for the summer season. On our last day we were woken at 7.00am to the sound of drilling ,banging and hammering .I phoned reception but no answer. I spoke to the workman directly and he apologised, however I do feel that more consideration should have been shown. The pool area was being refreshed and the wooden roof above the snack bar was being stained and varnished and rotten wood replaced. The smell of the varnish was not pleasant and limited our time which we spent around the pool. The pool filtration system is the noisiest that I have ever heard. The water gurgles and slurps throughout the day and night and could be heard in our third floor room. The beach to the right of the hotel is neglected and unusable.Debris is strewn across the whole area.It is a disgrace, such a shame.
We stayed in a one bedroomed apartment with sea view. The room was basic but clean.Cooking facilities are basic but adequate.Don't forget tea cloths, dishcloths, washing up liquid etc as these are not provided. The 2 electric rings take some time to heat up so don't be in a rush!
We enjoyed meals at Poppodums which is an Indian restaurant across the road from the hotel. The Sienna restaurant next to the hotel was superb, great service and beautifully presented food which tasted just as good.We ate once at Theo's near the harbour in Paphos which was ok but we were disappointed with the size of the sea bass served in comparison with the sea bass that we were shown in the outdoor refrigerated display cabinet.
Bus service is good and inexpensive. There are bus stops outside the hotel which will take you to Paphos or Coral Bay.We went to Coral Bay and were very disappointed. We find the beaches in the Algarve much more picturesque and appealing.
We did not have any problems with using credit or debit cards and ATM's were all usable.

Stayed for 1 week recently at the Helios Bay. My wife and I enjoyed the stay and found the rooms clean and spacious and ours had a side view of the sea. Stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and found the breakfasts more than adequate regarding choice. Helios Bay Hotel is in a quiet scenic location overlooking the sea with lovely coastal walks, grounds and pool area well kept. Easy access by bus to the harbour or Coral Bay from outside of the hotel. Would reccomend the hotel and would stay again at the Helios if we return Cyprus.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have the better sea views.

Ive been to helios bay 5 times now last time was august/septembrr 2011 and even had my wedding reception here! The owner is lovely and the bar staff are always very friendly, they did all the food for my reception and the owners wife even made a cake which was amazing! The rooms and villas are very clean (stayed in both) its nice and peaceful at night and if you get a seaview room there is an amazing view! The nightlife in paphos isnt too bad (very cheap drinks) some nice restaurants close by (indian opposite is lovely) also there is a small beach close by which is nice. We hired quad bikes from paphos town which was fun i would recommend! Will hopefully return in the future!!

Room Tip: Sea view room

We were in Cyprus the week of their financial meltdown- interesting! If you're arriving when it's dark just head for Paphos follow the brown and white signs for Tomb of the Kings, pass it on the left and keep going until you see the Helios sign on your left. Do try eating at Yanni's taverna - turn left outside the hotel cross the road and it's about 100 meters on your right. Cheap and cheerful Yanni's wife is English and Yanni speaks English"know what I mean?" Great place to eat with some authentic lamb recipes but have the salad rather than the chips! Cypriots were eating there which is usually a good indicator of authenticity.

i have recently booked at the helios, holiday is for myself, and two daughters... got what i feel is a good deal from jet2.com.. but the booking confirmation advised was a studio with no balcony.. i was confused as to just what was outside the door, so to speak, so have had several conversations with the hotel direct... they could not have been more helpful.. i was given clear information around all accomodation, and options to upgrade if availability... they really could not have been more helpful... am extremely happy with the service so far...
i guess im writing this review now, as by the time the holiday is over i will have forgotten how great the hotel was at the beginning....
