“Loved it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2008

I have just come back from Athena Beach Hotel, was there for a week with my daughter from the 28/08.08 still 04/09/08 and loved every minute of it, the staff were very friendly and helpful, and as i am a early riser i used to see them cleaning the grounds each morning
Would go there again

Our 5th stay in the last 3 years which must tell you straight away how much we like it!. As with many of the previous reviews the staff are excellent. Special mention for Erik & Kamil in the Nectar Bar who work extremely hard and always remember your chosen tipple!! Cannot understand complaints about number of weddings. There are only 1 or 2 a day and usually only one ceremony takes place in the hotel at a time with the others outside at the town hall etc. The hotel has their own wedding co-ordinator and nothing seems too much trouble. One couple had requested a pair of doves for their ceremony and these were duly delivered. We were on Half Board this time but usually had lunch instead of evening meal. As we had booked a Superior Room had the advantage of a later breakfast up to 11 am which with a 1 year old was a welcome bonus. The pools are lovely and clean and the two larger pools have a jacuzzi in each. There is a smaller pool with a slide for the kids and the little security man makes sure no one comes to any harm. Have to mention the Spa. My daughter and I treated ourselves to a massage before we came home and felt really pampered and relaxed afterwards. Many people have said that Cyprus has got more expensive since going to Euro this year. We did not seem to spend any more than last year - everything is still dual priced, for example menus will have the price in Euros & Cyprus Pounds and we did not see any major change. If you are eating out there is such a range of places to eat and prices too. You can get a three course set menu meal for between 10-15 Euros per head in some places. Would recommend the Napoleon, Cavallinis & the Rib Shack/Bombay. Talking to other guests we are not the only repeaters, many others come back year after year and we will be back next year if not before!

We have just returned from a week in Cyprus, where we were attending a wedding, though not at the Athena. We had a brilliant time, and I really cannot fault the hotel at all. I am surprised by some of the negative feedback on here, and wanted to add my positive comments, for what its worth.

As many people have said, it isnt a 4* luxurious experience such as the sort you might find in Thailand for example, but it is well equipped, extremely clean, and most importantly, very well situated, with a beautiful sea front location- this is part of what you pay 4* premiums for, and the view from our sea facing room was lovely to wake up to each day.

The pool area and grounds in particular were faultless, loads of space and choice of sunbeds- by one of the pools, in the gardens with plenty of shade from the trees or right on the beach. During my week stay, there were always available loungers in any of the locations at any time of day- we certainly didnt find that the 'best ones' went first!

Again, as many have said, the breakfast was good, with loads of choice. We had lunch at both the pool side bar, and air-conned restaurant where there was everything from soup to salad, burgers to spag bol, it was pretty standard lunch time fare, good but not amazing.

There have been many comments about unfriendly staff on here; in my experience, all were friendly and helpful.

There are also several negative comments about weddings on here, which puzzle me personally- although we saw a couple of weddings during our stay, the hotel is so large it really had no impact on us whatsoever, other than to make me smile, as I always like seeing happy couples celebrating their big day, and its fun checking out everyones outfits!

Incidentally, there were 4 other couples also staying at the Athena as part of our party, and all had the same positive experience as us.

We are keen bowlers and wanted to combine our sport with some winter sunshine. The Athena hotel even in late november exceeded our expectations for both.

Staff were friendly and helpful. We complained about the noise on the first night (air con on the roof above our room-looking inland top floor). No problem we were helped to move.

Rooms what you would expect not exceptional but decent size clean and well appointed.

We are used to roughing it in Spainish hostals or similar so the complementary slippers and dressing gowns were a treat

If you believe in breakfast like a king then this is for you-kept us going til tea time

Other meals not so attractive we preferred to meet some local people so walked into town in the evening, Plenty of places still open end November

We did not pre book the bowling but we just joined in and there was loads of opportunity bowled every day for a couple of hours sometimes twice and we could have gone on at other times too. The organisers Anne and Trevor were very good.

We hired a car (for free allegedly-NOT!) but only used it once plenty to do and see for us on foot into Paphos

Beach is rocky but water was lovely and accessible from piers a walk before breakfast very good start to the day

The average age when we were there was 70+ and there is some sort of entertainment each night-not our cup of tea we went out but the oaps seem to enjoy it

Bar pricey but happy hour worth taking advantage of.

We are going back again!

We went to the Athena Beach Hotel in July 2008 to get married and it was one of the best decisions we've made. We booked a sea-view room on a B&B basis but on arrival were upgraded to a superior sea view room and half-board, which was great. It was on the ground floor and had its own terrace and sun-loungers. Fantastic for sitting out with a couple of drinks watching the sunset.

The hotel itself is very nice. I agree with some of the reviews saying the hotel is dated in parts like the corridors but our room was very nice and the empty fridge came in handy for stocking up on drinks etc. The rest of the hotel was good also, with very nice pools and a perfect setting on the beach. Its a good 20 minute walk from the main part of Kato Paphos but there's quite a few restaurants and bars at the triangle about half-way along. Even handier is directly across the road from the hotel where there's a supermarket along with a few nice restaurants including a fantastic Mexican called Poco Loco and a british-style pub called the Wild Horse. There's also a Haagen Dazs cafe which serves up some nice drinks/desserts.

As above we went to the Hotel to get married and if you're looking for somewhere to have your wedding then look no further. The hotel wedding co-ordinator Linda along with the first choice wedding co-ordinator Lisa were both brilliant and arranged everything for us. We read a couple of reviews where people were complaining about the number of weddings but i cant understand the criticism. Most days we were there you would see either 1 or 2 weddings but the hotel is very large and you dont really notice them.

The food in the hotel was ok considering it was free but we tended to eat out most nights as there's a huge selection of restaurants in Paphos. For anybody who would be wanting to go along into the centre of paphos everyday i would suggest hiring a car, as its too far to walk all the time and the taxis are shockingly expensive (8-10 Euros to go about a mile).

Overall I loved our holiday and would recommend it to anyone.

Firstly, ignore any negative reviews you may read about the Athena Beach, we did, and rightly so. We had just returned from a wonderful week at the Athena Beach. When we arrived we went straight to reception where we were greated by very friendly staff, both from reception and guest services. We were given our room key, and our cases were taken by a porter. We went upto our room, which was very nice, clean, bright, comfortable, it was then that we noticed a letter saying we had been upgraded to a Superior Room. We had booked at sea view room but not a superior sea view room, that was a lovely surprise. We then went to explore the hotel, and it was delightful. Very clean, spacious, not to crowded. The pool area was also very clean with plenty of sunbeds with some on the garden and on the beach. If I had one gripe about the sunbeds it is that people start putting towels on beds as early as 6.30am, which is selfish, but if everyone else is doing it then you have join them (not at 6.30am mind) but that happens everywhere you go. We had our first evening meal in the restaurant as we had booked a 3 night flex dine, food was fab, just one thing, men, it is long trousers, my husband wore long shorts, we were met at the door by a member of staff then a waitress showed us to our table, neither mentioned the shorts to us, however the restaurant manager asked my husband to leave and get changed, this he did, just was a bit annoyed that he wasn't told when we arrived at the door. We ate out 4 nights, and the restaurants in the area are wonderful, the Italian up the road on the left (can't remember the name) is the best we have ever been to, we went there twice. We did not have one bad meal whilst we were in Cyprus. Bus service is good, the harbour is beautiful. If you are going you will have a lovely holiday, enjoy it and make the most of the weather, coz look what we came home to!

I agree with a lot of the comments here regarding its NOT a 4 star status and i would agree it is a excellent 3 at best.
Anyone saying its a 4 or 5 has clearly not traveled enough.
The good points are that the pools are lovely and the hotel is clean it has open spacious grounds and a decent hotel bar.
Thats about it the beach is really bad only way into water is using man made piers you cant walk in from beach due to the rocks.
The food is a joke in fact the food is in serious need of a health inspector, although i must say breakfast was good lunch or dinner was a joke.
We went with friends for a wedding and while our stay was enjoyable if its a nice beach your after forget this hotel and possably part of cyprus.
Good luck
