“Absolutely brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2007

On first arriving at the Elysium we were greeted by friendly staff and given a glass of fresh orange..(nice touch i thought). We were shown to our room (a mountain view) and were very impressed. The view wasn't great, but considering the amount of time you spend in the room it didn't really matter. I think it was better in the end as the sea view and pool view rooms would have been noisier. The pool area was brilliant. No need to take your own beach towels or lay them out..that was done for you. Drinks are very expensive around the pool and pool bar....but nothing more than you would expect from a 5* establishment. Food at the hotel was excellent. Lots of choice. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff, and all were very friendly.
All in all a very relaxing enjoyable weeks holiday. Shall certainly book again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2007

Stayed at the Elysium for a fortnight late June. Very pleased with the choice. Very good service, excellent food, half board is very appealing. An oasis of class and refinement. This is a true 5-star.

Room:
Inland view, quite spacious well appointed, bed huge, sheets changed daily, dressing table, chairs and table, bath with adequate shower, Moulton Brown toiletries, robes and slippers; adequate balcony for chill out with glass of wine; mini bar; turn-down service. Read previous post of an inland view that overlooked the service track, so requested a nice view and got one; room on 3rd floor with view of garden fountain courtyard, trees screen nearest houses beyond field but still have view of the distant hills and Tomb of the Kings; overlooking tennis courts. Great advantage of inland view is shade from the sun in the afternoon whereas sea view balconies are in full sun therefore not much used in evening.

Pools:
Fresh water, one pool medium size with swim up bar, kids allowed; other pool large crescent shaped with fountains, no kids; large hydro pool in the middle. Lovely flowering vegetation and palm trees. Spaced out loungers on huge lawn before beach. Great swimming in the sea, sheltered lagoon. A tip: enter the sea in left side of beach, it’s sandy here but bit stoney in the middle. Great service from pool boys who bring towels, lay out your beds and umbrella, they attend to re-adjustments regularly. Really nice touch is they bring cold face towels mid-day. Pool and beach waiters.

Food:
Food excellent, service of a very high standard. half-board Choice of three different top quality outdoor & indoor restaurants, superb table d’hote and a la carte menus, and buffets are excellent; the Epicurean is very romantic. Then two more paid restaurants besides. Serving staff and chefs are delighted to help vegetarians. Excellent quality live musicians in one or two restaurants nightly. People are encouraged to dress for dinner and three-quarters and shorts are not permitted at dinner. Breakfast buffet wonderful and chef cooking eggs.

Liking refinement we only ate outside at Artio (hotel will book) and that is as good as the hotel. The rest look tacky.

Down-sides:
Few. Getting into the sea is stoney underfoot. Wedding guests from outside can be unsavoury and use the facilities but manager says that will be tackled in 2008 season. Large conference in June restricted choice of restaurants and crowded the lawn for two days. Indoor bar Astira is dull. Air conditioning in room was not conld enough when outside temp is 42 C !

My husband and I had our honeymoon at the Elysium Hotel in June 2007. What an amazing hotel - we had the best holiday we’ve ever had! We stayed in a Royal Villa, and it was worth every penny.

The villa was comfortable, spacious and clean, and we had our own terrace and plunge pool. It was definitely worth the money to have these extra facilities, as it felt quiet and private despite there being a public path at the end of the terrace (hardly ever saw anyone). Room service was very efficient, so if we wanted to we could spend all day there.

We did venture out (but not very far!) - the restaurants were brilliant, our particular favourite being the Epicurean where we ate 9 nights out of 12. The service was impeccable here and the food absolutely delicious (we were never disappointed by it or got bored). We had lunch either at the Lemonnia Piazza or the Mediterraneo Taverna - both were yummy! We either had breakfast in our villa (best room service breakfast we’ve ever had!) or there was a buffet in the Lemonnia Piazza, which was nice because there was more choice.

The hotel itself is beautifully designed, and a real pleasure to walk around. There are lots of flowers and trees, and the grounds are very well maintained. We didn’t use the main swimming pool, but it is huge with plenty of sun loungers all around it. The spa is incredible and the staff were very friendly - the Espa treatments were pure heaven! The evening entertainment wasn’t noisy and intrusive - there was a rather good Cypriot crooner, singing and playing the piano in the bar most nights (great cocktails!); there wasn’t much else on the evening entertainment front, but we liked it like that, and if you want more then Paphos is only a bus/taxi ride away.

If you want a relaxing and luxurious holiday, I would highly recommend the Elysium. We had looked forward to our honeymoon for a long time, and we were blown away by how amazing it was. We’re saving up to go there again, even if it takes us a few years!

we have just returned from a week at the elysium(June 07) and i had to read the reviews again because it seems some people have stayed at a different hotel!
I think your experience depends on when you go and what room youre allocated.
We had a cypriot maisonette which was lovely. Duplex with 2 bathrooms a living room downstairs and upstairs bedroom. It was really smart (apart from the net curtain thingy(!), had a lovely outlook over the royal gardens and was sooo quiet!
Tip - not all standard rooms are above the atrium as someone has suggested, so ask specifically for one which does not it will be quieter. Dont get an inland view its not pretty.
We travel quite a bit and i can honestly say it was a beautiful hotel with lots of lovely touches that set it apart from a 4*. ok It might not be the George V in Paris or the Sandy Lane in Barbados, but its a lot cheaper so you cant compare those types of hotels to Cyprus.
Food was wonderful, spa was one of the best ive been to, and the weddings werent too intrusive at least the week we stayed. Mostly small affairs so maybe we were just lucky.
Couple of negatives, im not into entertainment but something in the amphitheatre besides weddings might have been nice e.g.classical or jazz, the mediterranean restaurant was closed 5 nights out of 7 for guess what...wedding parties, and someone staying with children said they couldnt use most of the restaurants.Didnt affect us but i dont think Id go with kids.
Overall very impressed and will go back.
p.s. All the negative stuff about Paphos is true Im afraid, its the kind of resort i went to at age 20, shabby and ugly!

We stayed here at the beginning of May 2007 as we were getting married in Cyprus but not this hotel.

First impressions were amazing, the hotel is so spacious and clean looking. Staff were friendly and helpful. We upgraded room half way through our stay from a sea view to a loft room, which was gorgeous. The pool area was great and the beds very comfy.

Breakfast was brilliant, especially the cooked to order omelettes! A very wide range of food, from cereal to champagne. We didn't eat here in the evenings so can't comment on that.

Yes, the area surrounding the hotel could do with a bit of a face lift, but when you are inside the hotel grounds it is perfect, so why worry? It took us about 20 mins to walk to the harbour which was nice, although the beach front route is a bit rocky.

  • Liked — The loft room was amazing
  • Disliked — Maybe too many weddings

I stayed at Elysium beginning of June, which may not be fully high season, but I appreciated the feeling it gives you that there are no crowds in it -- due to plenty of space in endless sitting rooms and the lobby and well-designed gardens and pool landscapes. The hotel is spotless, very clean and well-maintained. The rooms are comfortable and in accordance with the hotel class standards in terms of space. The surroundings are flat, no steep routes in the hotel surroundings, which is an advantage if one has kids. I also was very happy with the food, both in breakfast and lunch buffets of the main restaurant. Breakfast is very rich, including things made to order and fresh fruit and a lot of different nuts, dried fruit and cereals. The best is pastry, really freshly prepared in house by a French pastry chef, including both Greek traditional choices and international specialities and offered both at breakfast and lunch buffets. Their in-house prepared bread is very nice, too, while fish and seafood is also sufficiently offered. Salads are also of excellent quality. The restaurant is spotless in terms of cleanliness and provides both indoors and outdoors seating -- the latter close to a small pool landscape, which is quite relaxing. The staff in the main restaurant is particularly friendly and helpful, trying to cater for guests' special wishes, if any. There are also other restaurants in the hotel, which I did not try.
The pool landscape is interesting and provides for privacy to the extent possible. Sunbeds by the pools are of good quality (wooden with mattress) and there is a pool used exclusively by guests in a wing of superior rooms. The beach is small and artificially impoved, which is a disadvantage. However, it is well maintained and there are multiple sunbeds around at different levels of a nicely conceived structure.
One disadvantage of the hotel is the fact that part of the rooms do not overlook the sea or pool area, but the back side, which is not particularly nice (these are priced differently, however). A further disadvantage is that the room airconditioning (at least in my room) was very noisy.
The location is nice, as it gives you the feeling of open air. It is almost adjacent to the archeological site of Kings' Graves. The Paphos port is relatively far (around 3 km, not so easy to walk to if it is hot), but on the other hand the place is quiet and open and I think cooler (in terms of temperature) than the Paphos port area. There are a few other hotels near Elysium, which are not a problem at all, as they are at a distance, and certain fast food possibilities are around 300 meters farther at the main street of the area. Getting to Paphos port offers many entertainment possibilities for the night, I did not try entertainment at the hotel (I am not particularly keen on that).
I had no time to try the Spa or other facilities. The hotel organises all taxi or mini bus transfers very efficiently, using a cooperating firm and charging the stardard amounts on the hotel bill -- which prevents any possible misunderstandings and unpredictable surcharges.

  • Liked — Feeling of luxury, cleanliness, privacy
  • Disliked — rooms overlooking side area and noisy airconditioning

We stayed here in May 2007 and were slightly concerned at the mixed reviews. The hotel IS stunning - beach butlers lay towels on your lay beds and fix your parasols. They fetch drinks to your lay beds and simply charge them to your room. The pools are clean and well kept and the general hotel is spotless.

We had to ask 3 days in a row for toilet paper and toiletries to be replenished. Not good when you both have an upset stomach 3/7 days!!

There were far too many weddings - we counted 4 on one day but a couple told us there had been 14 one day. The guests mill around the lay beds and it's quite annoying when in the evening the bar is full of bride/groom and their guests.

Entertainment consisted of a lady playing the piano and the whole week we were there we saw 4 couples in the bar/lounge areas aside from wedding parties.

Come out of the hotel and it is unmade roads and fast food - KFC/Irish pubs/eat all you can for £2 breakfasts...you get the idea. The hotel is in a patch that takes 20 minutes to walk to the harbour or a bus ride to the Old Town or Coral Bay. Location not good!!!

I've been all round the world but this is a 4 star hotel - upgraded probably on the back of things like the beach butlers- and I certainly would say if you are thinking of booking maybe look elsewhere.

  • Liked — Beach butlers
  • Disliked — cold 'hot' breakfasts, poor location, having to ask for toiletries to be replenished, too many weddings
