I must admit that it is a year since we visited the Elysium, so I hope that things have changed. We stayed in the hotel in November to celebrate a family birthday. We were a family group including grandparents and grandchildren as young as nine months.
Admittedly, November is low season but gosh it was obvious - the place felt like it was simply ticking over. I can't bear that attitude - if you're going to do something, do it properly!
The hotel is beautifully landscaped and attractive. The public areas - pool, reception, lounges etc - were very much what one would expect from a five-star hotel. Sadly, the pools didn't seem to be heated. The children's pool was FREEZING. This was a huge disappointment and made swimming with very small children near-impossible. There is a small beach at the hotel but we weren't even able to walk on it because it was covered in a thick, thick layer of sea weed that seemingly nobody could be bothered to clear away.
The food was ok - breakfast was best. Half of the restaurants were closed so pretty much one had to have the buffet that was laid on in the evening. It was quick and effecient - good for us with small children - but we really felt that the staff were on the hard sell with the drinks. Also, the main restaurant is like a big banquetting room - it had no natural light and we could have been anywhere. This feeling was compounded with the staff - it was hard to find anyone Cypriot or Greek! To me that is a great shame - it gave the place a sort of cold anonymity and none of the warmth we'd expected. The service was fine but nothing to write home about and we definitely felt with the children that we were pushed into the corner out of the way. We wouldn't have wanted to have disturbed people trying to enjoy more grown up time but the staff might have been a little more subtle about it!
The accommodation was fine. At least the hotel put us in rooms next door to each other, which was helpful. We had a family suite. Other than it being a bonus not having to share our room with two children, the "suite" was merely the end room on the corridor where the architecture didn't allow for a balcony or even proper window so the only natural light was a slim corner window. There was sofa bed in there, tv and a bathroom. It all felt a bit cave like.
Now, to my main gripe, which really left a bad taste and turned a lovely family week in a slightly disappointing hotel into a bad experience. The hotel has a cockroach problem. Unless you're in one of the villas, all the rooms are accessed via internal corrdiors, so the univited guests weren't slipping in under the door but climbing up through the plumbing. When we first arrived I found a dead one on the bathroom floor. I tried to put it to the back of my mind but over the week we had more and more visitations. After the second, we spoke to reception who were extremely casual about it and sent someone to spray the bathroom. Fat lot of good that did. Everytime we mentioned that we had more, we were treated like irritants or even chancers. It was if we were the only people who'd even mentioned this and they didn't believe us - as if we'd planted the things and were trying our luck to get upgraded or a lump off the bill! I've learnt since from reading reviews that the cockroaches have made themselves at home throughout the hotel.
I'm sorry - it simply isn't good enough in a five-star hotel to have horrible creepy crawlies coming up through the plumping on a regular basis. It made me wonder about elsewhere, such as the kitchens?! Worse than the cockroaches themselves was the attitude of the staff to the problem. That aside, I wouldn't really suggest anyone stayed at this hotel in really low season. We like quiet but this was completely without any kind of atmosphere or soul.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on TripAdvisor and warm greetings to you from Paphos!
As mentioned in previous review responses we do welcome all types of criticism here at the Elysium and especially when it is of a constructive nature. This allows us to maintain our service and facilities at the highest possible standard levels.
It comes as an unpleasant surprise to read your review, not only for the content itself but also for the time lapse of 15 months since your stay with us.
We will be immediately looking at our records to assess where exactly and why we failed to meet your expectations, nevertheless in order though to set the record straight, we would like to mention that there are hardly any reviews from fellow reviewers that claim to have had the same experience.
We hope to be given an opportunity to welcome you back to the Elysium in the near future for you to witness at first hand our ongoing successful effort to meet and exceed our guest expectations.
