“Does not live up to expectations - more like a 4 star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2013 via mobile

Visited with my husband for a last minute break in mid-September. Chose on the basis of the website and trip-advisor reviews, and left a little disappointed that it did not live up to its potential.

The good - lovely pool, good location in paphos, being next door to the tomb of the kings, lovely food in the Mediterraneo and Japanese restaurants, pleasant outdoor bar area for sunset drinks.

The not so good - limited opening of hotel restaurants due to them being used for external functions eg weddings (the opening of each restaurant was nothing like as often as described in the hotel guide in our room), inconsistent quality of buffet offerings, misleading advertising of themed evenings (management did compensate us for this, but we saw the advertising again just before we left, unchanged) overcrowded breakfast restaurant, occasional poor/ slow service in bars and restaurants.

The hotel did not seem to be operating at anywhere near peak capacity during our visit, and based on our experience, our issues could only be exacerbated with greater occupancy.

Not of a comparable standard to other 5 star properties we have stayed at, and we are unlikely to return - will probably try the Four Seasons if we were to return.

This hotel is superb in every way. We stay there regularly. The staff are first class, the views from the side sea view are enchanting, & the bed was so comfortable that I have ordered a mattress of the same make & style.

Room Tip: Side sea view is good value & the view is stunning.

Stayed here for 1 week in May with my son and Wife. What a lonely place on the beach. The rooms , the complex/ surroundings/ the staff and the best of all the food. We went half board and the weight unfortunately just went on. The buffet food choice was absolutely lovely , different themed dinners from different parts of the world. For a leisurely break it's hard to beat.

Room Tip: Overlooking the poll and sea. It was lovely.

Excellent hotel, all staff couldn't cant do enough for you... would highly recommend the Villas with own pool. Ive heard mention that the drinks are expensive, would say they are about right... if you want cheap? don't go to a 5 star hotel! Great place, will be returning.
On the Villas... they could cut a small hole in the trees at the end of the garden so you can see the sea / sunset? just a thought???

Room Tip: Villa and own pool is the way forward.

We have just spent a short break at the Elysium in Paphos. While we have visited the hotel on previous occasions this is the first time we have stayed there. We found all aspect of our stay to be excellent. However I would like to make a special mention about the staff involved in all areas of the hotel. I found them to be very professional , courteous and very helpful in every way. The food was excellent throughout with a special mention for the breakfasts. The pool and garden areas were very well maintained and sun loungers were very well spaced out. The bedrooms were very well presented with welcome refreshments on arrival. We were also upgraded without having to request same. . As a recommendation the hotel should signpost the way to the lifts and reception as the hotel is very spread out. Also the signage to the various rooms in the spa area could be improved. Overall our stay was very enjoyable and relaxing and I would highly recommend the hotel to anyone concerned

A last minute booking proved to be very successful. Lovely staff, great location, amazing cocktails.....
Evening buffet could be a bit more varied, but we aren't really buffet lovers.
Wine choice was good and not over priced.
The only negative was having a large sea view balcony that we couldn't use due to the mega smokers next door, which can't be blamed on the hotel.
The entertainment could also be a bit more lively.

Pros.-
Very few cats.
Excellent, friendly and attentive staff.
Clean and comfortable accommodation.
Food, excellent quality, good choice.
Free wi-fi, good signal

Cons.-
Expensive drinks.
Breakfast "hot buffet" -not.
No fresh milk.
Health and safety warning in room!

Cats..............

I'm starting my report by mentioning cats. As someone who can't stand having
cats around them, it was with some trepidation that I booked a holiday in Cyprus, given that it has a reputation for having "hundreds" of the blighters wandering around. After much internet research I decided to book a holiday at the Elysium thinking that as un upmarket hotel they would be keener to keep their guests happy. My hopes were rewarded as we saw very few cats around the hotel. There were some we noticed wandering between the tables of the outside restaurants but as we stuck to eating inside, this wasn't a problem. Beyond the hotel there didn't seem to be any more than any other continental holiday destination, which came as a nice surprise.

The rest.....................

Now for my views on the hotel proper. First impressions on entering are that it is a very grand hotel with a vast reception sitting area. Checking in at reception was very easy and we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded from a standard room to a "side sea view". This may have been partly due to me contacting the hotel in advance and asking for an upper floor
(to avoid the possibility of encountering cats with a ground floor room!).
Welcome drinks were provided in the reception area after which we were shown to our room by a helpful porter. I should say at this point that all staff throughout the hotel were friendly, attentive and very helpful.

The room was not vast, but adequate. It, as was all the hotel, spotlessly clean. Ours had twin beds pushed together. The room and furniture was all in good condition, the hotel is 12 years old so I don't know if its had any refurbs in that time. There was a complimentary bottle of wine and one of water in the room when we arrived, which is nice.
There was a small flat screen TV with a reasonable selection of channels including BBC1 and Sky News. There was the usual minibar fridge, along with a selection of complimentary teas and coffee (Nescafe) and kettle of course.
We did find the lighting in the bathroom over the shower/bath to be a little dim, this seems to be due to all the room lighting being provided by low energy CFL or LED lights, (LED's in the bathroom). The complimentary toiletries were good quality Molton Brown.
The room air conditioning didn't work when we arrived but was fixed within a day. The hotel offers free wi-fi up to 1Mbps or payable up to 15Mbps.
The free service proved adequate for our needs and a strong signal was received everywhere in the hotel and grounds, including the guest rooms.
The room also contained the usual electronic safe however since it was down at floor level inside the wardrobe, this may not suit some physically challenged guest's. (not all rooms are like this though).

The strangest thing in the room was a note reminding guests that food and beverages purchased outside the hotel were not allowed in the hotel for "health and safety" reasons. It's the first time I've heard that a bottle of water may be dangerous! - why don't they just admit they want the profit from selling it themselves. They do offer to supply six, one litre bottles of mineral water for 6 euros, however as they couldn't supply sparkling, we weren't interested.
We paid for bed and breakfast however at the time we went, half board was included free - a bonus.
Buffet breakfast's are provided in the Lemonia Piazza. This is a meal you won't forget as one voice rises above all else, that of "Super"Mario one of the breakfast chefs. He is the epitome of bonhomie, welcoming all who pass by his cooking corner. However his entertainment skills outdo his cooking as we thought his colleague was better at cooking eggs. If Mario ever leaves it will be a sad day for the hotel.
The quality and variety of food available at breakfast was excellent, lean bacon, buttery croissants, smoked salmon, sparkling wine etc. Nevertheless
I felt one thing let it down which is common to many hotels, warm not hot, buffet (pre-cooked bacon, potatoes, sausages, beans etc) and only luke warm plates - this is a spoiler for an English person. Also we were unable to obtain "fresh milk", only long life was offered.
Evening dinner buffet is provided in the Epicurean restaurant. Here there was very little to complain of, other than the high price of drinks. The food was some of the best we have tasted in 5* holiday hotels throughout the world, with a different country/continental theme each night, with super hot plates available - result!!
The outside areas are kept as immaculately as the inside, the loungers and parasols may look a bit long in the tooth but they are very efficient and comfortable and plenty of them. There are also outside staff who appear at your side as soon as you reach the lounging areas, offering to adjust the parasol and longer positions and even laying out your towels for you!
Aside from standard loungers there are a number of beachside cabana/divans which are very comfortable and very popular. The almost private beach is covered in black sand. You can also enter the sea from a jetty alongside if you don't like this type of sand under your feet. There is an extensive swimming pool area at the hotel however we did not use it whilst we were there, preferring instead the warm sea. One note of caution on the outside paved areas, they could be very slippy to walk on with wet feet.
Adjacent to the hotel is the Tomb of the Kings historical burial site which is worth a visit (only 1.70 euros entrance fee).
If asking about local transport, the hotel staff usually recommend taking a taxi ( possible thoughts of commission payments??), however it is very easy to use the local buses, which pass along the nearby main road frequently - individual journeys are 1.50 euros however 5.00 euros buys an all day ticket so you can hop on/hop off anywhere in the extensive Paphos bus service area.
Incidentally the reception staff discourage people from walking to the centre of Paphos, it really isn't very we far, we did it in about 25 mins at quite a slow pace.
Anybody who already knows the Elysium will realise that I have missed out a lot about the hotel, it is truly vast and therefore doesn't feel crowded even when full to capacity. I haven't even touched on the spa or indoor pool, simply because we didn't use them.
Congratulations if you've mangaged to read through all of my meandering report, all in all I can thoroughly recommend the Elysium.
