The hotel was lovely - although - leading hotel of the world status - I may reserve judgement on until I have stayed in a few more! We are away to another in Jan - so I'll update on how that compares!

Pros
The hotel basically has a private beach and it's own mini harbour - which an independent company - Nick's - runs watersports from. ( if you are feeling bored - pull up a lounger and check out the soap opera - that is Nick's Watersports on a daily basis - very good light entertainment!)
The breakfast is amazing!! Everything you could imagine!
Very Clean hotel - with lovely seating area outside for lounging after a hard day watching the crazy antics at Nick's!
Offered a free meal at the Ambrosia Restaurant, free pink sparkly wine on arrival, 4 free - sauna, hamman or jacuzzi vouchers and a free champagne breakfast - as well as complimentary upgrade as we were on honeymoon.

Cons
Well I suppose you guess when you book - but it all v.v. expensive here - a regular coffee is about £3.50 - never mind anything else!
The Spa - is in major need of updating - we had free vouchers to use with our honeymoon package and used just one - as a bit of a Spa addict I was not impressed!
The new Asian Fusion restaurant looks lovely - but the staff are so snotty we did not go for dinner - even though my husband is addicted to sushi!
WATCH OUT - they overcharged us on our debit card for our lunch on the last day - by £25 - and I had signed for it before I realised that it had happened!
When we were checking out we heard another couple complain of the same thing!!??
There is a major holiday resort on the exterior of the hotel walls - everthing you would expect from timeshare sales people, inflatable sunbeds, pubs showing the footie, tacky, tacky tatt for sale and those annoying reps - flying up on their scooters to try and get you to go to their club/buy a lottery ticket/share a shot etc!

So - hotel OK - def not leading hotel of the world status! Surrounding area - oh lord crazy zone! With little to no local culture to be recognised! The UNESCO sites are great mind-you and worth a visit - esp. the mosaics - just walk to the harbour - they are right at the start of that area.

If you are going to this area and want a quiet, romantic break - stay at the Columbia Beach Resort in Pissouri.

We have just returned from 2 weeks in glorious sunshine at the Amathus. It was our 3rd stay there and it remains our favourite place anywhere for a relaxing, comfortable and welcoming stay. Many of the staff have been there for years and are first rate. All the staff were, as always, friendly and helpful. The new restaurant, the AsiaChi, was first class, and, once we got used to the NuBar, it was good too.

The grounds for sunbathing are the best we have found anywhere with lots of sunbeds and umbrellas, and staff to help you with these, and a beautiful expanse of well cared for lawned areas close to the sea.

There are many good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

We are puzzled at some of the recent comments about this hotel on this site as we find it hard to fault. We shall return next year for sure.

My husband and I stayed here for 1 week of our honeymoon. From the minute we arrived the staff went above and beyond our expectations. We booked a room with a private plunge pool with a jacuzzi function. When we checked in there was already a bottle of rosé bubbly on ice for us as well as water and a fruit platter. 3 times during the week we had canapés and apperatifs delivered to our room. We would often come back to our room and find a bottle of sparkling on ice and more fruit. The staff were so polite and went out of their way to make sure everything was to our satisfaction. I was especially impressed with one manager whom I saw speaking at least 5 languages with different guests throughout our stay. The grounds were beautiful and the food was great. I hope we will be able to return for an anniversary!

We went to the Amathus for the 7th Succesive year for our Autumn holiday. The public areas have recently been refitted and are better than ever, including the new restaurants and bar.

Unfortunately whilst we were away I was taken ill with a bad back, the hotel had a Doctor in our room within 20 minutes and I was admitted to a local clinic for 2 days. The hotel looked after my wife to make sure she was ok, phoning her regularly, delivering flowers to the clinic and fruit to our room. When I returned to the hotel every member of staff were aware of the problem and constantly checked up on me. Nothing was too much trouble.

When booking, splash out and book a pool/sea view room, 3rd floor.

The hotel is absolutely perfect if you need a good rest, and the Orangarie Breakfast Terrace must have the best view in the world, and the food is wonderful!!
