“Food so disappointing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Just had two weeks at the Annabelle and while the facilities are excellent and the staff well motivated, my wife and I, and others that we made friends with, were so disappointed with the food. So bland and luke warm and obviously prepared to a limited budget. We have stayed at most of the hotels on the airport side and the food was certainly the worst that we have experienced in the past decade. The position is brilliant with accommodating bars only yards away with prices only a fraction of the very expensive hotel bar tariff. I should go back like a shot if I could go B&B.

Just returned from a week at the Annabelle in Pathos. Thoroughly enjoyed the stay, our room was very comfortable and clean, and overlooked the vast water feature at the side of the hotel. This area is away from main pool and restaurants, and so was very quiet both by day and night. Food was plentiful and varied, being buffet style. Staff were always friendly and helpful. Would agree that the drinks were too expensive, presumably to compensate for the fact that full board was slightly less expensive than B&B! The hotel is very conveniently placed near the seafront leading to the harbour.

We have just returned from a week`s holiday from The Annabelle Hotel in Paphos Cyprus. First impressions were I`m afraid not as good as The St George Hotel we stayed in last time. Although the service was excellent and the staff very helpful and friendly and the hotel is situated very close to the harbour. Our room was large and very clean but the seaview we were upgraded to was a side view not face on.The food was always lukewarm but a reasonable choice. The entertainment could have been better as most nights it was a pianist who finished at 10 pm. The cost of drinks was very expensive with the cheapest bottle of wine at 21 euro for a wine that sold in local stores for 6.75 euro. Doubling the price would have been sufficient! we enjoyed our week as the weather was great but would not choose this hotel for future stays in Cyprus.

Room Tip: Ask for a FRONT facing sea view.

My wife and I have just had a lovely week at The Annabelle. It is a lovely hotel and is in a great location in Kato Paphos, close to the harbour and various historic sites around Paphos. We had a sea view room which was spacious, clean and had a balcony. The lobby, pool and bar areas were excellent. The grounds were very pretty and beautifully kept.

We had full board and all meals were in the Fontana restaurant. The meals were buffet style and the choice was excellent. They even catered for a gluten free diet and supplied gluten free bread for breakfast and made rice pudding specially for evening desert.

All the staff without exception were very friendly and very helpful. They were also very good with elderly people who were in wheelchairs or had difficulty moving around.

My husband and I are retired and have just returned from a weeks holiday in Cyprus at The Annabelle Hotel which is set right on the sea front close to Paphos harbour, I believe this hotel is still classed as a 5 star and I think you still get 5 star treatment although some areas of the hotel need to be refurbished, the swimming pool tiles definitely need attention and our double room and bathroom, although it was very clean and had a good view was looking a little tired, that said the bed was enormous and very comfortable and the bed linen and towels were changed every day.
The position of the hotel is very good, just a short stroll into the harbour area which is fairly flat and suitable for people with walking difficulty, there you can catch a boat or take a bus to most places or go the other way along the beachside walk which is very pleasant.
The food in the hotel was excellent we were on full board basis, there was plenty of choice, all the food was very well presented and looked appealing as well as tasting very good, the only slight problem we found was the food was never very hot, but this seems to be a problem that we have encountered before when the food is served buffet style. The attention to detail in the restaurant was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for the staff, drinks however, were priced slightly on the high side and we noticed quite a few people went to local bars after their meal due to the cost of the drinks in the restaurant and the Lobby Bar which was a shame because every evening the hotel has entainment in the bar and it was very good albeit low key such as a pianist or a singing duo and I'm sure more people would have stayed had the price of the drinks been reasonable..
The grounds around the hotel are quite spacious with plenty of places to sit and lots of sunbeds, beach towels are provided and the beach beds are comfortable you also have the use of the sister hotel next door "The Almera" which has an indoor pool and spa, however, we didn't use it so I can't comment.
Overall we had a lovely holiday,at a very nice hotel at a reasonable price, I would definitely go back and would recommend it as a good 4 star plus but not quite 5 star.

We are retired and travel a lot. We booked The Annabelle for our 11th holiday this year.( Some at 3*, some 4 and some 5*.) It's a hotel we would consider 5 star as regards the room we had- good size, bathroom OK size with replenished toiletries each day, excellent quality towels. Bed linen changed often. Free safe. Balcony furniture comfortable, had sea view as requested. Only downside was if we wanted to use fridge for our own drinks, we would be charged 15 euros for stay. (Needless to say we didn't bother!) room kept very clean. Lots of coat hangers.
The pool area fine, clean and plenty of sunbeds which were comfortable. The only problem was that they had no ŵheels, so to move them to face sun, it was very noisy and scratched the paving stones.
In great position, the hotel is close to centre and on the waterfront. There are additional beds on grassed area at waterfront.
Staff are lovely, very polite and friendly and helpful.
HOWEVER, the food is NOT 5 star. Horrible orange juice at breakfast. But the made to order omelettes fantastic. Same cakes and pastries every morning-boring! At lunch and dinner- Limited choice, food not always hot, not good quality- crab sticks at 5 star? I think not! Much of the chicken seemed to be processed. The same food was recycled at lunch or dinner. Cheese tasteless. Some days the best dessert offered in evening was jelly! The themed nights were a joke. The spiciest food at 'Spice night' was supposedly spiced tomato soup. On the whole we found much of the food pretty tasteless. One evening we were given a questionnaire to complete at dinner and we marked most categories as 'satisfactory', whereupon a manager came over to ask why we had only given that comment. We explained about the lack of heat of food, the sameness, the very bland taste of most food. Talking to other guests, a lot agreed with us, but there were others who thought the food fine! There was no show cooking- no fresh fish, what fish there was described only as 'white fish' and we are very sure it wasn't fresh. The joints on offer in the evening looked good, but tasted of nothing.
As for the price of drinks in the hotel-a joke! 4 euros for a litre bottle of water, when the supermarket nearby sold 6 one and a half litres for 2.32 euros! We would expect a mark up, but not to that extreme! A measure of Bacardi in hotel was 5 euros plus 2.90 for a coke. Nearby shop sold Bacardi at 9.50 a litre. Does the hotel not realise if they sold drinks at a more reasonable rate, more people would actually buy? I'm sorry, but in my eyes you cannot serve 3star food yet charge 5 star prices for drink!
Lovely hotel and staff, such a shame about the food quality and the over priced drinks.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. Whilst I am pleased you enjoyed your stay overall, I apologise that our themed buffet meals did not meet your expectations. We strive to offer a diverse choice of dishes and themes to appeal to all our guests tastes, and to the highest standards. I am disappointed that we were not able to recover your negative meal experience during your stay, which we usually aim to do when guests give us feedback that a dish or theme is not to their particular taste. Its very important for us to respond to guests feedback immediately and it seems we did not do this for you, which again I am sorry about

Thank you again for bringing your comments to our attention, they have been followed up with our Resort Chef, and Food and Beverage Manager.

If you would like to return, our Resort Chef and Food and Beverage Manager would like to meet you personally to discuss your preference so that you enjoy your meals more next time

Kind Regards

3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2012

I have read many of the reviews of previous travelers and they all seem to have experienced a variety of inconsistencies during their stay at the Annabelle. I would like to describe our experiences from our stay 16th to 23rd November 2012. I would describe our travel experience in hotels as very varied from a 2* hotel on Lake Garda to the 5* Luxury Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica California and everything in between.

Positives:

The price - we booked this through TravelZoo.com for a week full board complete with transfers and 20Kg luggage each for £970.00 for 2 people so not bad at all.

We arrived quite late on the first day (9:30pm) and were greeted by Andreas who collected our baggage, got us checked in and ushered us into the restaurant for a late supper. We were then personally guided to our room afterwards, a very nice touch.

Our room (406) was on the top floor and overlooked the pool/garden area, had an amazing sea view and we could see the harbour/castle in the distance. The room was very spacious, cool marble floors, nice bathroom with 2 robes/toiletries, good balcony with 2 chairs and a table. Bed was massive and comfortable, 30" flat screen TV on the wall, other amenities included a key operated safe, hair drier and stocked mini bar (more of the mini bar later).

Pool area has a large main pool and a couple of smaller quieter pools one with a swim up bar (never used any of these more later). The gardens are well manicured and have a very exotic feel with palm trees and birds of paradise flowers everywhere. There are plenty of loungers and during our stay many were unused so perhaps the hotel was not that full, certainly the weather was fine for sunbathing at about 23C most days. There is a small bar adjacent to the main pool.

Main lobby lounge is very comfortable with subdued evening entertainment and even an outdoor seating area if its not too chilly. The lobby lounge staff are very efficient and complimentary nibbles are provided with coffee (cookies) and drinks (nut mixture).

There is a small gym adjacent to their spa with a few running, cross trainer type machines, a multi gym machine and several other bits of free weights, barbels, dumbels etc. Enough to keep you going but I never used this either (more later).

I am sure that there were many other areas to the hotel which we did not get to see and we never bothered going next door to the sister Almyra hotel which we could have done.

The hotel is in a fair state of repair, however it was opened in 1985 so coming up to 30 years old it looks quite dated from the outside from an architectural point of view. Lots of flat roofs and flat facades etc. Could do with a lick of paint, it certainly does not hit you as being a 5 star from the outside. However it is in an excellent location being 10 minutes walk from the castle, harbour and the excellent archeological dig with impressive mosaic floors from Roman times.

The main buffet restaurant is fairly large and also has outdoor seating. Other than at peak times at dinner (6:30pm to 8:00pm) you can easily get an outdoor table, they even have some gas patio heaters to keep you warm if it turns cool.

Negatives:

There was nothing major but many minor things which extremely irritated me.

In general, guests at the Annabelle are treated like a crop from which money can be made from. This is at times sinister, clandestine and endemic amongst all the staff.

The drinks at the Annabelle are overpriced by 100%. We limited ourselves to one glass of house wine each at dinner which cost 8 Euros a glass. These were 250ml size so about 3 glasses to a bottle. A bottle was 33 Euros and several staff insisted every time we only ordered a glass that it was cheaper to buy a bottle. Clearly they cant add up or need to learn portion control. This got quite tiring at times-if I want a bottle I will order one.

Drinks in the lobby bar-on 2 evenings only we limited ourselves to a coffee each and a brandy (metaxa) and this was 24 Euros. Most people feel obliged to buy a drink and they just sit there all night listening to the free entertainment rather than having a few drinks and not worrying about a horrific bar bill at the end of the stay.

The same around the pool, the bar staff have nothing to do as no one purchases a drink. As muggins found out 4 Euros for a 1/2 pint of beer where in town its only 2 Euros for a pint.

Water in the restaurant. We asked for a jug of tap water and were informed several times that the tap water in Cyprus was unhealthy and not recommended. This is of course a lie, the tap water in Cyprus is absolutely fine-after all what do they make their ice cubes from?? The restaurant staff have been instructed not to serve tap water at all costs so that they can charge 4 Euros for a bottle of water (750ml). You can buy a 6 pack of 1.5ltr in town for 2 Euros.
Its a hot climate, there are many older people staying at the Annabelle (we were the youngest at 50) and I put it to the Annabelle's management that they are failing in their duty of care to their guests by not providing complimentary water with meals. Disgraceful.

The information in your room clearly states that bringing your own food or drink into your room is not allowed " due to international hoteliers health and safety rules". Put that into Google and you wont find anything because its cobblers. You are resigned to having to smuggle water, coke, snacks and any alcohol into your room for fear of persecution. We also had to hide the evidence and dispose of any empties daily. You should not have to be subject to such degrading actions when staying in a hotel. Absolutely ridiculous.

The Minibar in the room is checked at least twice a day to see if you have used anything but the real reason is that they will charge you 15 Euros if you remove anything to chill your own things (which of course you should not have there in the first place). This seems like a preoccupation to me. We left the do not disturb sign on the door constantly while we were in the room and we must have collected 10 cards pushed under the door saying they had called to check the minibar etc. The night service? lady also tried to check the minibar. There is NO PRICE LIST for the mini bar in the room. I did not ask for one as I had not intention of using it but be careful-even Andreas who brought our bags said please check the prices before using!

If you have any creased clothing they will not supply you with an iron and ironing board due to, yes you have guessed it "health and safety" reasons. The hotel will press and iron your clothes for you at an additional charge.

The air conditioning is switched off at the end of October presumably to save money, however it was really hot and stuffy in our room at times so we had to leave the doors open to stay cool. Fortunately bugs were not too much of an issue.

The pool and gym are not accessible until after 8:00am for "cleaning and health and safety reasons". As an early riser this is useless for me, I like to train and exercise from 7:00am. So by the time you have exercised for an hour or so, got showered and changed its after 9:30am and breakfast finished at 10:00am which is a rush and too late to eat.

Restaurant. Well run, efficient and good variety but for heavens sake we are in the Eastern Mediterranean so where is all the Greek/Middle Eastern food? You could have a roast dinner with gravy and veg most nights, salad, hot puddings with custard etc. This hotel clearly caters for the more elderly British traveler who is less adventurous in what they want to eat. We never went hungry and there was plenty of food but it did not blow me away like a 5 star hotel should. Yes there were other restaurants Al a Cart etc which you again had to pay extra for but that should be the standard of food to everyone.

I have a particular problem with the wild cats which prowl around the outdoor spaces at meal times. The place is overrun with them and the restaurant staff turn a blind eye to people (obviously cat lovers) feeding them at the table. This should not be allowed, they carry disease, possibly rabies and are a health risk to the eating area. The management should clamp down on people feeding the cats but I fear that they quite like them prowling around. Because of this we had to eat inside the restaurant where they did not enter and this spoiled the al fresco experience we could have enjoyed.

Summary:

As you can see these are all minor quibbles but when added together the whole thing just becomes a pain. This is such a shame as I really do think the Annabelle is a nice relaxing hotel. Would I stay here again? No I am afraid the answer is but we will return to Cyprus soon as the people are friendly and the climate for November is wonderful.

Hopefully this is a candid and unbiased view of our experiences at the Annabelle.

Room Tip: Try and get a garden/ocean view on the 4th floor in the Aphrodite wing. Very nice.
